Post your painted AR's here and possibly a brief description on your inspiration or process.
Here's mine:
Started with a new build and decided to use Brownell's Alumahide in Caote and Dark Earth. I also decide to use both colors and use the darker tone as contrast.

After a few weeks, I decided to paint my other AR this time in OD. I gambled and used a new paint called Painter's Choice (Oregano) and went with an old OD look.

I stripped it down and used Moly resin OD and flat black. then came back after curing and filled in the roll marks with the black and then back into the oven.
the skull was an after thought and I may cover it with another coat of OD.

It came out good and the finish is better than the pics show. it was coated a few times and after 3-4 shooting sessions it no-longer gave off a "paint" smell when hot. I like the FDE but in Indiana OD is my choice. I considered a grey color but was not sold on it since I don't know anyone that has it done that way.
I am waiting on a Noveske lower to arrive but that will most likely stay black.
If MAGPUL puts out maybe it will be an FDE project.

Lookin great guys!!! That two tone is nice! Also on that OD one I think that punisher logo tops it off!...excuse me after I post this if I put my flame suit on b/c of a few individuals here who are tired of seeing my rifle.

AR...that's an interesting green...almost reminds me of Glock OD.
I like it though b/c it's different than most of the greens you see used!

Here's my Recon Carbine as it sits right now; the only things painted are the barrel and bipod assembly, which were done using Aervoe epoxy spray paint with a topcoat of Alumahyde II matte clear. Once I (finally) get an optic on it, I'll probably man up and paint the whole thing in some kind of camo pattern.

I like it because it blends in anywhere fairly well.

I bet it does! Seriously coyote works good in any environment...OD works good in almost any environment. It's got a bit of both going on.

What camo pattern kit did you use to acheive the effect ? What are the Krylon colors used and how did you 'seal'/ lock in the paint ?
Nice work.

You gotta love the green guns. This is one of many but it is Magpul Green and SOCOM black with the Pirate Flag. Duracoat is good stuff but I'm sure that it will need a touch up after a rifle match or two.

What do you think of the flag?
http://i208.photobucket.com/albums/bb26/JBar01/DSC01436.jpg
Spike's Tactical lower, CTR, Timiney Trigger, ACOG, Ergo Grip, YHM Big Hole, Dan Young barrel, Spikes vert grip, Magpul trigger guard and mag.
As far as inspiration goes, well, I had the barrel in the back of the safe next to the pile of stripped lowers, some new green paint and an afternoon in the garage. Just trying to keep a fun hobby fun.
Stay Safe,

Ain't she a beauty!?!? High tech paint job: Take one can of "desert tan" krylon, one can of "olive drab" krylon, duct tape them together and push both buttons simlutaneously. :D
BTW, the black stuff is powder residue, carbon, etc. This baby gets used.

what's that flash suppresor?
Here's one I helped my brother build. Krylon Faux Swedish style pattern. I think the pattern turned out pretty good because it obscures the shape of the weapon.
I didn't think it was a good idea to put Krylon on the barrel. Has anyone done that before? Does it smoke and peel when the barrel gets hot?

I was at the range just yesterday and shot next to a guy a who Krylon'ed his entire gun- bbl,r'cvr, bbl and all.
He shot almost 400 rnds over a very short period of time and that Kylon-ed M4 looked great- no peeling, smoking, running, fading or anything at all as a result of getting VERY hot .
It just sat there looking great. Much like your rifle, congrats.
all done with duracoat.

So I was sitting around the house yesterday and decided to experiment. Not sure about the durability of the finish but I figured what the heck. Grabbed a can of automotive interior paint from a broken panel and gauge pod I put in my Mustang. Purchased the can with the pod and new piece and was pretty amazed how well it worked. It is designed for "soft plastic" pieces like that of a door panel insert or an A-pillar pod. Since the ole AR has some plastic on it I stripped it down and shot a few coats on the furniture. The result was much better then I thought it would be. We'll see how it holds up the next time I go out but here is the result.

I took the plunge and painted my rifle yesterday. Didn't intend to paint the optics but it's kind of hard to stop once you get started.
Base coat of Krylon khaki, then green and brown added via mesh laundry bag netting placed over portions.
Quick drying, took about an hour to do the whole thing.

Same rifle. It’s just Krylon from Wal-Mart, a dark green and a beige. First pic (in the rocks) I took out in the back yard, didn’t turn out right, too light. Second pic was by a friend, "semi-pro" I guess you could say with a big Canon SLR and glass worth more than my little truck. The color in the action pic IS the color on the rifle.

!st attempt at this was with Testor's Model Master enamel in three WWII colors. I put way too many coats on but it held up fairly well. After really messing it up this summer, I had a pro do it in Cerakote desert earth. The CCF Glock is two tone Ceraote with desert earth and coyote tan. Cerakote is the toughest finish I have tried so far.

What's the point of having a rail mounted sling mount and a barrel mounted side-sling mount?

What's the point of having a rail mounted sling mount and a barrel mounted side-sling mount?
It's a work in progress... barrel mounted side sling point is a remnant from BEFORE she had a RAS installed. That will be coming off now that the RAS is on-board.

Keep the barrel mount sling holder just in case your add-on goes tits up.

My mud gun. I didn't intend for it to turn out the color of Southern VA red clay mud, but it did. I was going for FDE (the color of the stock, the only part I didn't paint). The khaki krylon was WAY too light, so I misted on a light coat of Rustoleum flat brown which had a real red tint to it.
Couldn't bring myself to paint the light since it goes on my green gun when I'm using it instead. I may paint the sling though.

rustoleum camo khaki would be a better color.

The side-sling surely came standard on the gun.
I have the regular FSB sling loop on one of my guns but use a rail mounted attachment up front instead.

My CQBR clone was just some krylon, rustoleum, and some testors spray paint done at home. If you where talking about my rifle thanks for the compliment.

Yeah, bro. Nice rifle and that's an extremely well done paint job. I really thought it was professionally done... the lines are so clean without a single blemish. Nice...
What Rustoleum colors did you use?
I bought just Krylon for mine. OD, Earth Brown, and Tan.

You guys sure make it difficult not to want to paint at least one of my AR's. I may have missed it but what brand/colors did you use 5Bshooter as your AO looks very similar to what it looks like around here half the time at least when there isn't snow on the ground.
CH
two colors looked better to me than 3+, so I used Rust-oleum's Flat Brown enamel #239112 as the base color, painted everything with 100% coverage in this.
Then used a mask to create the pattern using H.S. Camo's Marsh Grass #00321
found the perfect source for the "grass" mask, by cutting a few stalks off my wife's ride [she flies too fast anyway!]

Thank you for the excellent information. Your area looks similar to mine in the Black Hills of South Dakota. Rarely is the grass 'green' here anymore. One more question if you don't mind. How well does the paint stick to your Hogue grip? Will definitely be painting at least one of my rifles now just as soon as it is in its final configuration. I doubt it will turn out as good as yours but will try :)
It doesn't stick very well at all to the Hogue. I'm not too committed in keeping that particular grip, but will see if it grows on me. The pic is of spring in full bloom here, so it will only get more brown as the year goes on. As to painting your rig, just go slow, have a plan, and if you don't like it, let it dry and try again. It's actually very simple. Now, some of these other guys have real talent and it shows -- i.e. Molsen, Cameron, ic_guerrero, HOPLOETHOS, I'm sure I missed a few, but those take some serious time and patients.

I've painted my AR twice now, using Krylon OD, Tan, and earth brown. I want my AR to look like it belongs in the sandbox...

I originally just wanted to coat the stainless barrel........
love the looks of the two tone vltor mur1 upper. haven't seen that yet...
all of the markings would be covered up with the cerakote, even the Nmo 8p on the barrel is no longer visible.so I thought I would keep the VLTOR logo.all I had to do is punch out the roll pin and then slide the forward assist down.it is dovetailed.
since these pics I have filled in the rollmarking with black.

Nice work. What did you use for the stencil?
Thanks, I used plastic ferns I bought from my local Hobby Lobby. They're reusable, and they fall apart after a few layers of paint like with real ferns.
Kilo 1-1,
What colors did you use?
BTW, looks great!
Thanks. I was prepared for that question...so I snapped a picture of the colors used.
http://img234.imageshack.us/img234/6939/colorssj6.jpg
I also positioned the cans in order of when they were sprayed, starting from left going to right.
All krylon except for the spray on stain (great stuff), the non Camo series colors are as follows: Mimosa, Brown Boots, Meringue, Home Decor Honey transparent stain, and Clear coat. The honey colored stain's important for toning down the brightness of Krylon's Khaki...which is a really dry and bright color. Hope that helped.

I don't think I've posted this here yet:
Before:

After:

Paint was Alumahyde II Coyote, Desert Tan and OD Green from Brownells.
Nice looking scheme shooter521!
If I remember correctly, there's three (3) types of "dry." Dry to touch, dry to recoat, and dry as in cured. With that in mind and out of curiousity here--on your paint job, how long did it take to cure?

About a week at room temperature. I let the base coat cure completely before adding the second and third colors, then I let the finished gun cure again, so it was really a 2-week process.
Heat will cut Alumahyde II's curing time down to 2-3 days, but the wife would've griped at me if I'd left the gun hang in the garage that long. ;)

What technique did you use for this pattern? Looks nice.
Thanks, I used Krylon Satin and Camo paints. As for the pattern, I used leaves from a plastic fern stem I bought from Hobby Lobby. They're reusable, and they don't degrade as quickly as real fern leaves do with repeated use.
I gave the gun a base coat of khaki, then put the fern on top, sprayed some medium'ish brown and dark brown with it. I then got some light colored Meringue paint and sprayed it on sparingly to give it some contrast with the fern on top as the stencil again. After that, I sprayed some honey colored satin clear gaze to blend in the colors together. I then sprayed on a few coats of clear coat, though it's optional. The end result allows the colors to have enough contrast, yet not too much to where it'll attract the eye.
All it needs is a T-1 and a UBR.

I recently painted my N4 / Colt with Krylon. I used OD, tan, and brown from the camo series, and grey primer. I still need to do something with the Acog.

Nice! But you two are totally f-ed if you ever accidentally lay your rifle down and forget where you put it. :p
Two recommendations to take your camo paint job to the next level:
1. Stove Bright High Temperature Stove Paint
This paint withstands temp up to 1200 F. If you shoot 200 rds in five minutes, parts of the barrel/suppressor will get that hot (near the throat and the gas block).
One drawback - you have to bake the paint at 400F to set it.
The upper receiver/rail assembly can take that no problem. Take all the plastic parts off the rail.
Don't recommend this for the lower unless you remove the pistol grip, and stock. Remember to take the buffer and spring out, too.
2. Rustoleum Multicolor Textured (from Walmart)
This has a grainy sandy look/feel to it, and comes in a tan and a brown. Takes camo to the next level. Preferred for optics, stocks and parts that won't get over 200 F.
So use Stove Bright for the upper - similar colors as Krylon.
Krylon tan as the base for the lower, buttstock and optic. Then use Rustoleum Textured with a mesh bag or fern leaf, or just freehand.

My Spatha. Built on CMT upper and ASA lower I used all milspc internals. Te bolt was going to be replaced with a chromed one for ease of cleaning but this can kicks NOTHING back down the barrel. In fact, it appears to run cleaner than normal shorties. The can appears to be acting as an equilibrator on an artillery barrel. It does have a gas buster chargin handle just in case. The barrel is an 11.5" ER Shaw chrome lined heavy barrel, the rail system is the CASV-EL by Vltor. The grip and stock are from Magpul and VLTOR.
Now the can is the AAC M4/2000. It is absolutely the quietest can I have ever heard. There is NO hearing protection needed on this gun. Usually even with 16" or 20" guns you still need hearing pro because your ear is right next to the ejection port. No so in this case. It appears that the can actually pulls the gases down the barrel away from the shooter. The only negative here is the flash hider used with the new AAC cans rings like a tuning fork. In fact, the ringing is louder than the muzzle blast.
It wears an EO Tech, a PEQ-2 eye safe aftermarket laser and surefire light.
http://img511.imageshack.us/img511/4920/m4outofbagpq0.jpg
My MK-11 is a modified version of the issue. I use the same PRI matched barrel and bolt, in a chromed bolt carrier. The upper and lower are Stag and the parts are all milspec inside. The stock is of course the Magpul, the bipod is Harris and the scope is actually Leapers. Until it goes bad I will keep using it because it is camo'd to match. But when it does go it will be replaced by a leupold. The can is te Ops Inc Model 12, same as the military's. If I ever have to replace it she will get a AAC M4/2000. This gun is set up for the 77gr M262 rounds and is sub MOA out to 600m. I can engage targets with the heavier bullet out to 800m reliable, but the kenetic energy transfer is pretty weak for this round. The sage brush camo was done by our smith Joe. It is absolutely amazing in the field, and pretty danged good on bare concrete.
http://img511.imageshack.us/img511/8079/1000959pd5.jpg
The MK-12 is actually the DPMS SASS, but it is not the one they sell now. This gun is actually one left over from the trials for the MK-12 that Reed Knight bribed his way into winning. This gun, when shot side by side with the issued gun and ammo, is noticably more accurate. The difference between this one and the ones on the market now are mainly in the barrel. This one is very heavy under the free float, and fluted just like the current ones (though they are a bit smaller in diameter). But in front of the gas block the barrel is not fluted, it is smooth and has the step down for the Ops Inc 308 collar. The gun was designed to use this can, and so mine has one on it. And out past 500m it really does have a significant inpact on accuracy. It makes a HUGE difference. I have shot consistant headshots on man size silhoette targets at competitions at Camp Williams. I would guess that it cleans up the groups by about a 1/4 to a 1/2 MOA out past 500m.
The Leupold scope is a 50mm version of what we use in the military. The stock is the same Magpul and it has the same Harris bipod. The paint job was also in house, this one we call the rock pattern. The idea came from the camo on the WWI German helmets. It was simply to break up the outline at range and does an excellent job of that. On a rock at 50m it becomes pretty hard to see it.
Wow.. some of you guys are extremely talented. Great pictures.. almost makes want to do it, but I figure I would ruin the look.

i don't have a name for it - i cut out some random templates based on the crye pattern then used three colours for it - aervoe sand and earth brown, and krylon tan (gray). when i sprayed, i did a 'fade' - instead of filling up the template holes with an even coat, i let if fade from one part to the other. after the paint was dry, i further blended the colours by going over it with a scotchbrite pad, then dusted a light coat of sand, then followed it up with a matte clear coat.
i wanted the colours to fade and blend into each other a bit, rather than having very sharp, distinct patterns.
i guess i can call it 'subdued desert'.

So the light sand color is the overall base with the pattern in the earth, and tan. Then lightly with sand to blend.

I am sorry that we didn't get together one last time before I left. Depending on various factors I may not be back to AZ until late Spring 2009. Got to watch the whole tax thing.

Looks awesome. Really like the way it turned out. What sling is that?
I believe he used Duracoat's "Magpul FDE" which matched pretty well. I believe any difference in color may be due to a bit of sheen from the cured duracoat.
Whenever I used DC, I always mix at the lower end of their formula. I've seen instructions on bottles say one ratio and printed paper instructions say another. I always stick to the lower hardener to color ratio to keep the finish as dull as possible.
My first foray into duracoat taught me a good lesson about the hardener- the more hardener, the shinier the finished product. When I was finished and it dried after a few hours in the oven, it was "nicer" (read shinier) than most finishes you see on today's automobiles ;)
Looks awesome. Really like the way it turned out. What sling is that?
I believe that's the Emdom Gunslinger. MM helped design it with Emdom USA. They're pretty nice, I've been using one for a few months now. I may just order another for my other AR.
Very nice Hal_5555. What did you paint that with?
Just Duracoat in FDE. Then just Matte Clear over it. I am pleased with it. Thanks!

Those look awesome. Very nice job and skill. What kind of setup are you using? Compressor and gun / airbrush? Or... ?
Depends on the amount of paint or the number of guns or parts and color.
If it is a small job that I need to do quickly, an air compressor and airbrush, if it is several jobs, or a bigger job, I have a few HVLP guns with several cups that I use to save time and increase production, this works well with the several color camo jobs.

It's a DPMS upper with full length gas tube.
I've fired everything from Wolf to reloads with no problems.
Round count is well over 2k.

I got the pack about 3 years ago from CTD. The tags says the brand is called "Mil Spec." I think it was listed as the "molle 3 day assault pack."
