View Full Version : Iraqi's preferred sidearm

I saw this on the net this morning. Looks like they prefer a G19. The reason I say it's a 19 is that I believe the 9mm are more prominent outside the US and their police are armed with the 19.

US taxpayers floated the bill for 50,000 G19s for the Iraqis.

I wish they would have floated the bill for that meny G19s for us...

There you go, those guns were supposed to go to the Iraqi cops and soldiers, etc. What is this guy's role in life? undercover cop? :) probably not. I wonder how many of those 50K g19s ended up on the black market?

Uncle bought a lot more than just those G19's

Secondly -- the guy could be some MOI Death Squad guy they get issued G19's...

I remember a post on TOS a while back where one member stated that the Iraqi Police were selling their G19s for a variety of reasons.

I immediately called the Brady Bunch and complained about "straw purchases" but they didn't seem to care :D

Glocks are a good choice as they require little care and maintenance. If Allah wills the pistol to fire, it will fire.

Arm the Iraqi's and disarm the US, it makes alot of sense to me.

Uh, we gave them X numbers of Glocks. What Suicide was saying was that we could have given them that same number of M9s and give the troops the Glocks. Either way we are arming them. it makes less sence to give them what most would think is a superior weapon to ours. However, it just MAY have been a joke....

We also bought them a shit-ton of brand new Arsenal Bulgaria AR-M1's.

I spent twenty five months over there as a police training contractor in Baghdad at the Baghdad Police College running one of the firearms training programs. We didn't buy the hadjis 50K G19s, it was more like 175-200K. Teaching and training these guys is a huge and frustrating challenge: they are casual about safety, maintenance, markmanship fundamentals, etc.

I did get to develop some Iraqi firearms instructors and when I left in November, those guys were clearly up to the task of teaching their countrymen, but unless you constantly "tweaked" your staff, they'd run off into the ditch. I guess culturally, we will never get them where they really need to be.

BTW, they thought the Beretta was better than the Glock because they saw all the soldiers and most of the contractors carrying M9s. This was also reinforced because the Saddam regieme carried a Beretta licensed and Iraqi manufactured copy of the 1951 Brigadier that they called the Tariq.

This picture has been floating around the net. According the caption, the dude with the 19 is an Al-Sadr supporter at an anti-US demonstration.

THAT was one of the hardest things to teach, along with muzzle awareness...

And it's not only Glocks...

Walther has supplied P99's, Beretta has supplied some 92FS's (hard for me to believe as well), and IIRC Ruger even got a recent contract.

And yes - IA's, IP's and DBE guys (Department of Border Enforcement) all want a Beretta. After all, all of our guys are carrying them, and we only carry the best, right?

Wayne,
They paid us back right? That is for the 175k Glock 19's at lets say 350 a piece for a bulk buy like that...
Amazing. I'd love to see a detailed bill of arms that we gave them....

jack,

It was a complete Uncle Sugar "gimme" program. G19s became an overnight hot commodity and were selling for about $1200 US on the street when I left Iraq. That's about four to six months pay for the average copper. Ammo was $1 per round of 9 x 19 and was therefore a barter item or black market form of currency...

Would such a large number of orders cause quality to slip at the Glock factories? I was about to purchase a G19, but worry now would be a bad time. We've all seen smaller, high-quality manufacturers whose quality has dived after they got slammed with orders. Granted that Glock is huge already, but still, that's a big order for anybody.

With the number of Glocks that are produced every month I don't think it would make much of a difference. Keep in mind that the contract was awarded back in 2003 or 2004 and I believe all the G19s came from Austria and a good majority of the frames that we see now are being produced in Georgia.

I saw absolutely no signs of diminished quality and given the poor to casual maintenance done by the typical Iraqi cop and the sometimes sorry Third World ammo that was issued, that was a good thing (to steal Martha's phrase).

Every G19 I saw (many hundreds of them) had Smyrna, GA USA markings on the frames....

This thread is great; when I was in Najaf we opened a giant shipping container and it was filled with Brand-frigen-new G19's, batons, bayonets, zip ties. I was speechless and pissed at the same time...I tried so hard to get one or two but it just didn't work out.
The best part was that we gave them more guns than bullets- no shit. We traded the Iraqi police boxes of 9mm for more alcohol than you can imagine and Najaf is a dry province so they would make "beer runs" for us every week.
Not so surprising; Maxim, Club, and Fox magazine ended up getting us more Booz than bullets did.

The U.S. government spread the contracts around to many of the U.S. handgun manufacturers. You are right, Ruger got a contract for the P95 (I think it was the 95) and S&W got a contract for 9mm Sigmas. There was a pic floating around a while ago showing a U.S. soldier training an Afghani soldier on how to hold the pistol. I don't know if any of the Sigmas made it to Iraq, too, or if it was just Afghanistan.

I just wish Wolf didn't get the contract for their ammo! I sure miss the $89/1000 7.62x39! I'd just like to know why their .223 went up in price the same amount!

I thought about 1 year ago on a news video with the Police training with Walther P99's or S&Ws 99's ..

Anyone have any idea about that??

Here's a pic of an Afghani soldier with one of the 70,000 S&W Sigmas bought with U.S. tax dollars, along with SigPro's and Ruger P95's, 5,000 of each if I remember correctly.
