Something about reading this brought a smile to my face... it kinda made me think of Gran Torino and Clint having an old buddy next door who was always packing heat too. Good to see neighbors taking care of one another. http://www.kingcounty.gov/safety/sheriff/NewsandMedia/NewsDatabase/2010/April/04-08-10%20Burglar%20Shot%20Update.aspx

New details are emerging as detectives interview the victim and witnesses in the shooting that occurred yesterday (April 7th) near Carnation.

Meanwhile the 35 year-old suspect remains hospitalized at Harborview Medical Center in satisfactory condition.

The incident began about 5:00 AM at a house in the 3600 block of Lake Langlois Road NE. The sole resident, “Vern”, turns 76 this week. He was asleep when he was awakened by the sound of breaking glass. Turns out it was the suspect breaking a window on the victim’s vehicle, which was parked next to the house.

Vern went downstairs to investigate just as the suspect smashed through the glass on the sliding door, and a confrontation ensued in the kitchen. The victim telephoned a neighbor but in the process was hit on the head by the suspect.

The 68 year-old neighbor arrived, saw the broken out door and Vern covered in blood from a head injury and holding a pistol.

The suspect advanced on Vern who then fired once, hitting the man in the shoulder.

Vern left the house to get more help. The suspect was held at gunpoint by the witness, who had brought his own gun. The man would still not get down on the floor. As he moved toward the witness, he was shot a second time, this time in the leg. He went down and remained there until Sheriff's deputies and an aid crew arrived.

The suspect was airlifted to Harborview. Vern was treated and released from Snoqualmie Valley Hospital.

There does not appear to be any connection between Vern and the suspect, and the motive for the burglary remains unknown.
