View Full Version : 6004 Shroud Mod

I cannot take credit for this -- basicload from the lightfighter board was the first to draw it to my attention.

The idea is to cut the shroud down so it can be run up higher (better draw stroke and no weight on the legs)

-- All I did was pull the holster up to the height I wanted and noted where the shroud would dig into me.

Then I took a black marker and traced a half moon along the shroud - then cut along the line (I used a saw blade off a SOG tool -- but recently some of my guys have been using Dremels -- and it works a lot better)

The new (cheaper and flimsier) shroud is much eaiser to cut -- but unlike the old one the new one needs to affixed to the leg strap since the plastic sucks (it has a bracket that fall out all the time- so tape it down.

Needless to say I've done this two two Glock 6004's here (my light and non light ones) - as well as a Sig, 1911, and BHP one back home...

Thanks Kevin, I have been meaning to cut mine for the past three months. Your pictures and instructions will certainly help.

I was one of the fellas on the lightfighter board. My buddy Dan Colasanto and me wear our Safariland 6280's with the 2.5 inch drop UBL and a single leg strap to hold it against your leg better. A bunch of our fellow swat guys cut theirs down just like yours.

the HSGI udhp can be placed VERY high on the leg, im guessing just as high as the one above.

I talked to Gene after having problems with it riding to low with the QD belt mount, and he sent me a simple "loop" to use with the holster instead of the QD. It rides real high...

Excellent! I have a UDHP and one of HSGIs plain leg panels. The leg panel has a shorter, simple loop with no quick release buckle. I have been thinking about trying to swap it and see if it would raise the holster up some more on my stumpy leg -- and I bet that's what he sent you. Unfortunately I haven't gotten to play with it too much yet as I'm still waiting on a proper belt.

Kev,

I will post some pics of mine later. By the way guys mine is much nicer that his Sog tool hack job!

Ross I tried the belt adapter but it was still to high. I think that I only had a 1.5 inch adapter, do they make a longer one.

That looks like a significant improvement to comfort and such a simple mod.
I wonder why Safariland doesn't offer a model variation like that?
Is there any drawbacks to that higher ride in some scenerios?

KevinB
08-08-06, 20:07
Not realistically, in my experience -- unless one rigs right sided for rappel (which should not be done for a right handed pistol shooter IMHO).

It is more awkward to access in a vehicle - but once again (IMHO) you should be using a rifle/carbine first in a vehicle -- and if I have to go to secondary - I will be contorting my body to get out of the line of sight - or even out of the vehicle itself that an extra bit to draw in that pos'n would bother me.

I'm not sure why they don't offer a single strap panel. It seems at one point all the big mfg's went to a double leg strap (cool factor?), and you can't hardly find a decent single strap anymore. So now many guys are modifying their own. In fact, the trend seems to be going with a rigid low ride panel (UBL) with no leg strap at all. I just ordered the new 6351 ALS holster with a medium ride belt slide panel for CCW. I'm also ordering a UBL for wear with a chest rig. The only problem is the belt slot is 2" and I wear a 1 3/4" riggers belt. May end up making my own kydex belt slot panel.

I finally got around to modifying my 6004 during some down time at work today. I will have to say it’s a noticeable improvement. You can very easily feel the difference having the weight up higher and off the legs.

It’s also very easy to do. It only took me about twenty minutes total and that’s after spending some extra attention to cosmetics. I spend almost as much time with a file & sandpaper as I did cutting it.

Just had a Rep from Safariland here in my office. They are going to be offereing the Cut Shroud as an option on the 6004 and as a seperate part starting around Jan of next year.

Dont quote me on the part number, but might possibly be 6004-10

Thanks.

The Mod is simple, make a template and a Sharpie to draw it on the back of the Shroud. The use a dremel with a cutting disc to remove most of the shroud about 1/8" away from your line. Finish up with an exacto Knife and some sand paper and Viola... add Krylon color of choice.

Kevin's is still cooler cause his looks like he did it with a Dull Multi tool serrated knife...;)

Here's my modified 6004. I free hand drew the cut. I used a Dremel then used the cut piece as a template for the other cut. Had to cut the belt strap and melt the end and re-attached. Rig started black and I masked off the hood release mechanism and shot it with Krylon. Even the straps took the paint though I don't expect that to last. I just wanted to get rid of the black.

I'm unable to get the search function to work. Could I please trouble someone to post a link to the leg shroud modifications for the 6004 that were done by, I believe, Kevn B?

These were the mods allowing it to ride higher up on the leg.

thanks

When you get to that page, do a search for 6004. You'll see all accessories available for the 6004 including the shrouds. You should also see the 6005 holsters, shrouds and such.

I thought the group might be interested in knowing that the original design for the drop-leg holster, generally credited to the SAS, was exactly like the modded 6004. The holster was never meant to drop to the leg, just to get below body armor.

This is a copy of one of the originals:

I have tried my buddies 6004 a long time ago. I was impresses with its speed, retention, and reholstering ability. I was set on buying on and ended up going with a Cordon nylon "soft" type. I have been considering a switch to the 6004/6005. What is the advantage of the small rig posted above?

Once you use a 6004/6000 series you will never want to use another drop holster again. Safariland really hit a home run with this holster.

Thanks to those pioneers that performed the shroud mod, I did it and it rocks.

I'm jumping on this bandwagon as soon as I get home. I've heard people doing this before but I never gave it much thought until now. It makes perfect sense!! I wonder if the Sheriff would let me use this modified rig for duty instead of the normal manner (I'm runniong out of room on my duty belt)?

Kevin, how many magazines do you carry on your rig?

I couldn't contain myself after trying out my friend's modded 6004 so I had to re-do mine. I was able to do it with a small hand saw and then I cleaned it up with a dremmel and finished it with some sand paper. I haven't cut the suspension strap yet becuase I am still waiting for a quick release buckle from Safariland and don't know exactly how long it will be.

This is a very worthwhile modification that can be completed in about 15 min. if you have the tools and shop set-up - longer if using all hand tools, but worth the time. Go slow and be patient. In my shop we use aviation snips to rough cut the plate, then a Ryobi belt sander to fast cut the edges. The drum on the end makes a nice radius. Dremel tool to finish edges. Good to go!

I'm with Pat A on this ... I just don't see the need for it in uniformed, patrol police work. We've seen this come up with a couple of our cops (& a few at other agencies) again of late.

The item was designed for use with an externally worn (heavy) entry vest and allowing the pistol to be worn just low enough to clear the armor.

If you're using externally worn armor, then this design is great - I've got 6004s with the modified shroud for my work 1911 and a M9.

The modified shroud is the way to go with these; I was able to mod mine with a set of trauma shears and emery cloth.
