View Full Version : AR Parts Weight Chart
This is NOT my work, but is a salvage from the old Maryland AR15 Shooters MSN group. Many here have asked me to look for it and I finally found it on an old hard drive.
link to webpage of chart (http://spreadsheets.google.com/pub?key=tsU_kAjONKoGGfkDPaQZX1Q&single=true&gid=0&output=html)

I would be happy to maintain/add to the baseline if people wan to post known weights here in this thread. If you have pictures of your items on the scale that would be even more helpful to avoid any confusion.

Oh god, not another chart!
This will be very helpful in planning future builds especially when some of the latest gear gets added to the list. Good on you for posting this up.

Nice find. These two charts should complement the "Chart" quite nicely.
Thanks for looking for that and posting it up! It looks to be a handy additional reference for parts to use on current and future builds.
I'd love to help update it but I don't have the right scale, hence the importance to me of this chart. :D
I hate the chart and everything it stands for!
:D
Ouch. My KISS build comes in at an estimated 9.16 lbs with magazine and M193.
I can't understand the usefullness of the chart. I have built several ARs and they all function perfectly without knowing how much each part weighs.
What am I missing?

Weight is an important element to some people when choosing between one part and another. weight, cost, functionality... they are all aspects of the decision-making process.
If your rifle has never felt too heavy to you, you're not using it enough. ;)

Some folks might be concerned with weight and want the lightest parts. Some folks might be torn between two parts and take the lightest one. Some folks might want to build a rifle on paper and know what it weighs. If you build a full rifle on paper and bought it only to find it weighed 16 lbs, you might be a little bummed knowing that you could have saved a few hundred dollars, shaved off parts not worth the weight, and gotten a lighter build.
Imagine you want scope A because it's 1% better than scope B and they cost the same. Why get a worse scope? What if scope A weighed 4x more than scope B? Still worth it? I doubt it.
Ounces are pounds and pounds are pain. It matters for some folks.

Like people say... its not pounds... its ounces.

Hey Rob here is my contribution to the weight chart. Because the barrel is installed I don't have a scale pic but my new Daniel Defense 14.5" CHF Pencil weighed 20.1 oz stripped (no FSB).

Great chart. Here is a short list of additions with the accompanying picture. The scale is nothing fancy, but it seems to be reasonably accurate, and will measure as little as 1 gram.
Magpul MOE pistol grip with bottom cap and included flathead fastener:
2.7 ounces or 77 grams.

Complete BCM BCG:
11.5 ounces or 325 grams.

Vltor EMOD stock (storage compartments empty):
13.7 ounces or 388 grams.

Magpul PMAG w/ window, loaded w/ 30 rounds 55gr FMJ (current gen pmag):

Guys, I appreciate the pictures, but any chance that you can resize them down? I don't think we need images 1300 pixels wide just to read the weight information. I'm working off of a 22" screen and it's still a pain in the ass to scroll up and down.
Something in the 600 pixel wide range would be MUCH better.

I have to say this is an aspect I have thought of, but not to this extent. I will have to keep this for future reference. Thanks for putting this together.
Very nice info info to have when weight is an important consideration for a build.
Thanks.

Can anybody with a scale tell me the weight of the Colt factory 4 postion buttstock? I've been calling it a T6 but I don't think that's right. The lightest thing on the chart was the CTR at 7.4 and just from holding the two I think the Colt feels lighter, just curious wether or not it actually is.
Edit: Is the CTR 7.4 without a buttpad?

Yes the CTR is 7.4 oz. without the buttpad. The included butpad is 1.3 oz.

1 5/8 oz or 46 g.
Keep in mind using different brands and models of scales—especially the relatively low-end sub $50 kitchen and hobby scales shown in this thread—will produce vastly different results.
I threw several of these parts on a calibrated (laboratory) $1k Ohaus scale and came up with different numbers. (Even my personal OHaus Scout is giving me different numbers, closer to the lab scale.)
The cheap scales are great when you can measure one item against another yourself (to see a change), but for creating a baseline weight or for referencing against someone else's measured weight isn't a good idea for a chart like this.
Even the Excel chart is off a little bit on several of the items I checked. Some more than others. (The LaRue BUIS it shows as 3 oz., the two I measured were exactly 2.9 oz. Some barrels were off by an ounce and more. Small differences, sure, but they will add up quickly when you measure 5, 10 or 20 parts.)
So... the solution is to send inventory of your safes to me and I will spend the next two weeks disassembling, weighing and making a master spreadsheet. I promise to return everything. :p
I just bought a small scale for getting accurate results. Its acurate to .1 grams. I have some parts to weigh. Rob, do you prefer measurements to 1/100 of an ounce which would obviously be more convient or 1/10 of a gram which is a litte more defined at around 3.5/1000 ounce.
just a note, if you are looking at the weights of the stocks, the old entries are with the buffer assembly, but the new additions of the EMOD and CTR are not. so don't think that the CTR is lighter than the CAR stock, or current M4 stock.
Very useful information. Thanks.
this was my personal AR weight saving journey.

This one surprised me as it's one of the lightest offerings available.
All of these were weighed on two different digital scales and were in good agreement. The most significant deviation was the stripped Modstock which was 5 oz on one scale and 5.05 on the other (pictured).
Doesn't this thread rate a sticky?
Dom
I have some more weights comming, I just wanted to post these since there is some interest right now
Daniel Defense CHF 14.5 Pencil barrel CAR gas, stripped, for taper pins
577.4 grams
~1lb 4.38 oz
Daniel Defense F marked FSB .625, taper pins not inc, sling hardware not inc
146.5 grams
~5.18 oz
VLTOR gas block, set screw type in 0.625" diameter:
http://i304.photobucket.com/albums/nn176/Dr_Wolfenstein/ARs/VLTOR0625GB600x450.jpg
38 grams (38.25 to be precise)
~1.35 oz.
THat is light. I wonder if there is any danger of warpage with high heat.
I can't understand the usefullness of the chart. I have built several ARs and they all function perfectly without knowing how much each part weighs.
What am I missing?
I'm new to the forum so bear with me.
I've read through several threads since I was turned onto the site and one thing that Rob has been consitent about is his emphasis on using the best quality parts that your budget will allow with the intended purpose of the rifle in mind.
I sold a rifle after carrying it on it's one and only SWAT callout.
Stand at the corner of a house and hold your pet AR at low ready for about 9 hours and the sum weight of all the parts becomes a huge factor.
I have a much lighter rifle now with fewer doodads.
The next one (hence my search here) will be even lighter.

i dont really see the need to spam this thread with pics just for weight confirmation?
if you want more data, use my post 107 from the "Project Featherweight" thread if you want. I dont mind
I don't want to re-invent the wheel either. If someone has a picture proving that a weight listed is significantly incorrect then have at it, but I do not want to get side-tracked with updating that a Vltor Modstock is actually 0.2 oz. heavier than listed (as an example).
Great resource. Thank you all. :)
Here's a few items I've weighed recently, some are probably already on a chart or otherwise known, but in case they're not:
Item>>>grams>>>ounces
Magpul MOE CTR milspec stock w/out buttpad 198 6.98
Magpul MOE CTR milspec stock w/ std buttpad 234 8.25
Magpul CTR milspec stock w/ std buttpad 252 8.89
Magpul MOE carbine handguards 192 6.77
Magpul MOE midlength handguards 246 8.68
Magpul PMAG 152 5.36
Magpul AFG2 w/optional insert (no nub) 72 2.54
VTAC TRX Extreme Handguard 11" w/barrel nut 320 11.29
Magpul XT rail covers x3 50 1.76
Magpul XTM rail covers x12 sections 76 2.68
a2 stock with rec extension 492 17.35
rifle buffer 164 5.78
rifle buffer spring 62 2.19
A lot of very useful information in this thread.
Is there a similar chart comparing dimensions of rails?
Some rails are so big in width or girth that they feel like you're holding
a grapefruit.
Search indicates that rob_s had posted a chart at one time but it doesn't come up for me.

Awesome info in this thread. Definitely worthy of a sticky at some point.
Just to add a couple datapoints, I lifted this from another source:
Aimpoint Micro T-1 in LaRue Tall mount --- 5.8oz
Aimpoint Comp C3 (no mount) 200g 7.1oz
Below are verified by me on my scale:
BFG 1.25" VCAS (w/ Acetal Adj, VCAS-AA-BK) 172g 6.125oz
Boonie Packer 2P-TQA 1.25" (w/ M4 attach kit) 202g 7.125oz
Thanks for links for these awesome charts!
PSA: I've been watching for an inexpensive digital scale that does greater than 5 pounds. CVS has one right now with an 11# capacity for $20.
It's nice to be able to weigh entire rifles, and if I ever exceed the capacity I know that I have to take crap off the gun.
Mine is x.1 ounce accurate and it goes up to 6lbs. I just weigh the upper/lower seperately.
Ken... the Escali is a great scale; I love mine. Goes up to 11 lbs. and is only about $25.

Does anybody have weights for various barrels? In particular, some of the more popular ones: BCM standard and lightweights, Daniel Defense lightweights, Centurion, Noveske, etc.
(This is also an off-hand way of asking how much the BCM 14.5" LW middy weighs. :D)

Right you are. I hadn't noticed... now we have two weights to work with :)
I believe the lighter one is the AFG2, it is a smaller overall.
bringing this thread back from the dead in order to post a similar/more useful resource, otherwise known as the Parts Weights Database, or PWD. Check it out. Weight data from forums, youtube videos, dozens of industry providers, hundreds of manufacturer's web sites, and regular AR fans with scales. Almost 1200 rail systems alone now...and much more than just weights. Check it out.
