I just wanted to introduce myself, im a newbie, I have a barebones COLT 6920, and am fairly new to the AR platform. I have owned an kalashnikov carbine since 2002, and I consider myself a novice to that platform also but have learned alot by hanging out on akforum.net. Anyways, I knew I needed to add a AR to my gear, and so I am here to learn, and get advice from some of the AR guru's here. So I have 2 (20) round mags from Colt that came with my rifle, and 1 10 pack of mags that I got from Bravo Company USA (04TQ4) I have yet to experience any problems with my mags, because I have not had the pleasure of shooting yet :D , alot of talk about different colored mag followers, anti-tilt, aluminum, SS, HK it's all new to me. I know I can only learn so much from reading, so im hoping once I have some extra cash to get away from my bills that I can order a case of ammo. Or perhaps a variety of different ammo. The Wolf ammo is looking appealing with the prices of ammo nowadays but I realize that it may not be optimum for the AR. Anyways, a couple questions I have. How many rounds should I be able to get out of my barrel, and are there any extra parts that I should have on hand? I have read some about swapping out the extractor, but Im thinking maybe I should wait until mine starts to have issues? Also eventually I would like to put some type of optic on my carbine, but for now I will use the iron sights. Now being a carbine, how much does this hinder long range shooting if any, long range to me would be 500 yards. Also from what I have read, it seems that the majority of the problems that AR's have come from problem mags, so I am looking to get some of the new PMAGS when they come out. Anyways So far I have learned somethings just by reading/searching, can't wait to actually get to the range and start shooting. So heres a question, is my rifle an M4 or an AR or both? Im thinking that true M4's have select fire or 3 round burst, but not sure if thats the defining operation that designates an M4 rifle. BTW, I think my first upgrade will be a new sling :D

Good to see you here Bill.

Mags......GI mags with the green anti tilts are fine, Brownells and DSG are two "aftermarket" mags that are good to go.

Ammo......you know my feelings about Russian steel in an AR, but the price is attrative and a lot of guys shoot the hell out of it with no issues.

Optics.....save up and buy quality. Cheap optics are typically false economy. When they go TU, you have to spend more money to get a good one. Aimpoint and Eotech are the front runners for red dot systems and it's pretty much personal preference there. I use a Trijicon Compact ACOG 1.5x on my Colt, and it works for me.

I wouldn't mess with your extractor unless it it starts screwing up.

Spare parts.....gas rings, extractor & extractor spring, and firing pin are about it. Some people go ahead and also buy spare bolt heads.

Technically, the 6920 is the M4 for civillian law enforcement, it's the non NFA M4.

Glad you made it over here, lots of good info. :D

Another recent akforum.net --> m4carbine.net member here (actually arfcom for a few years prior to that). Haven't had enough time lately though to devote adequate attention anywhere on the web, although spending what I can here to get my new M&P flatop squared away.

Sharp looking AR you've got there......not unlike mine.

Considering the similarity in background, I would be interested in your views re. AK vs AR. Best conclusion I've yet been able to reach: GET BOTH ! ! ! :D

Welcome !

Like you I have been building a bunch of good Mags. I have ordered from.http://www.dpmsinc.com/store/products/?prod=656&cat=1507

Need a shoulder butt pad.http://www.dpmsinc.com/search/?s=butt+pad

Also from. http://midwestindustriesinc.com/ar_gi_mags.htm

At some point a sling might be needed also a forward handgrip and mounting hardware.
This is a great Company: http://stores.homestead.com/Laruetactical/Detail.bok?no=86

Need a quality rifle bag here is the best.http://www.eagleindustries.com/prd_detail.asp?ProdID=376&searchfield=rc%2D3223&Submit2=Search
Standard colour is Black.

Bought my bag from:http://www.talonarms.com/talonarms/
index.php?main_page=index

Thinking of sights:http://www.militarywarfighter.com/index.html
I bought the Trijicon 3.5x35 ACOG because of the longer eye relief.

Another I have is the EOTech 553. bought mine from this Company:http://www.opticsplanet.net/eotech-holographic-weapon-sights.html

There are so many neat things you can add to your AR all it takes is a large amount of MONEY.

About your AR I think the M4 has a 14.5 inch bbl. the others are 16.5 inchs. Having a burst fire weapon makes in and Class III Auto. don't think ours fall into that class.

As far as Wolf Ammo. I just don't use it. Just so many better choices IMHO.

Good Luck.

Flanker, nice ACOG you have, I've been leaning towards that or an EOTech.

I know im in a good place when Templar is here! Thanks for the Welcome guys! :D

.......Hey Blackscot I agree with you, and I had to have both also.....

If my new AR works out as my .223/5.56 gun, I may just replace my SLR106 with some kind of 7.62x39 AK. Kind-a miss the personality of that short, fat, tapered cartridge - the original and still most true-in-spirit AK round.
