I've been thinking about getting a carry pistol for awhile but can't afford MSRP on a shiny new example either an M&P or Glock in 9mm. So I've found a used G17 in good condition, I physically handled it, for around $400 and it's still a little of a stretch but I can afford it this week. My question is should I pick up the G17 or wait it out and save up a little more and look at the G19 or M&P9c since this will be primarily purchased for carry? I do want something fun to shoot.

Buy it and shoot the shit out of it.

I'm confident that the used G17 would probably run great; however, I would wait and purchase the pistol that you really want, you'll be happier in the long run, especially if you are looking for a carry piece for which I feel most people would be better served w/ a G19.

That said, here is the one warning I have...if you are like many of us here on the board this probably won't be your last Glock, you'll probably end up buying a full size down the road at some point anyway :D.

Get the one you really want, even if you have to save $$ for another month or two.

I would get the G17, but that's just me.

I'm leaning towards the G17, the only issue would be conceal-ability due to size.

G17 can be very concealable given the right holster. Know a guy (5-09, 200ish) who carries a G17 A-IWB every day.

If I pick this thing up this week what types of holsters should I look into?

EDIT: Nevermind, I just googled IWB holsters. I'm assuming it's just something you can get used to, like moving your wallet to another pocket feels odd for the first couple days.

I'd skip a used G-17 for $400 when you can drop an extra $60 for a NIB Gen 4 G17 with a GSSF membership.

Heck, I routinely see NIB Gen 3 G-17s for $469-$489 in my area.

Not to be a kill-joy, but if you are stretching to get to 400 for a pistol … what is the ammo fund like?

Even if this is a Glock, you'll still need to run $50 of practice ammo and preferably a box of carry ammo before you even think about using it in a carry scenario.

If you're worried about concealability then a Glock 19 is the way to go. I'm a slim guy and I don't like worrying about a gun printing through my shirt. I recommend the 19 because it's the best of both worlds. Small enough to conceal but not small enough to be considered a true compact.
