View Full Version : G19 - RTF2 or wait for the Gen4?

I've decided to go all 9mm and have decided the G19 works best for me although I'll be keeping my PM9. I currently have a Gen3 but I'm unsure what to get next. I've fondled the RTF2 at the local candy store and like it but I think it may be a little rough for IWB without a t-shirt. Anyone have the RTF2 that can comment? I'm thinking the NRA Show in Charlotte, NC next month might be a great place for Glock to debut the Gen4 G19 and I plan to attend in order to hopefully see one in person.

I'm not in a hurry, even if the Gen4 is a few months away but I'm curious what your thoughts are given the relative unknowns of the Gen4.

Thanks!

FWIW, I have both the Gen4 G17 & G22 and they have been flawless in 1300+ rds. in the 9mm and 800+ rds. in the .40 with various loads and with and without an X300 attached. I can only hope the Gen4 G19 will be the same as I plan on having the first blue label that comes into my local dealer.

I was also going to pick up a RTF2 G19 but my dealer is having a helluva time trying to find one for me, plus I already have a Gen2 and Gen3 G19 so I'm just going to go with the Gen4 G19.

FWIW, I decided to just wait for the Gen4 G19 instead of buying another Gen3 G19. :)

I was debating between Gen 3 & 4 on my latest G19 purchase, I opted for the Gen 3. Here are a few thoughts and opinions from Larry Vickers and Ken Hackathorn that helped sway my decision, I trust their opinions on firearms implicitly.

Not to be sacreligious or anything but it should would have been great if those posts referenced, oh maybe a thousand rounds through the new gun. I hope to see that episode of Tactical Impact out soon.

But that is another long thread already well along.

IMO the hook for getting a RTF2 now is that exceptional grip treatment. I love it but have 3 G19s now. I just have a hard time imagining the RTF2 will be on the market very long. Like 20 lpi checking, most comments I see think it's too rough for their hands and with the Gen 4 looming . . .

There's a thread right here on M4C with a list of people who own Gen 4's that have no problems with them.

And, even more people who speculate about them having problems.

Exactly right.

I am very happy with my Gen G17/ I like the grip treatment, grip angle, and mag release. The recoil reduction is nothing short of spectacular.

I have a G19 RTF2 and you are correct - they are hard on the love handles carried IWB. I carry mine in a Comp-Tac Infidel and have to wear a t-shirt under it to keep it from rubbing me raw. I've been thinking about taking sandpaper to the left grip panel and smoothing it down a little, but the t-shirt underneath is working for now.

OP,
Get both as funds allow.

RTF has proven to be a horrible grip treatment for concealed carry. It is like velcro with certain fabric types, one of the reasons that the RTF texture was toned down for Gen 4. Bear that in mind.

I would personally wait for the Gen4 to come out.

I love my Gen3 G19 But as I read about the Gen 4 guns having faster recovery times between shots due to the redesigned spring system, the idea of a "softer shooting" Glock 19 would be enough for me to wait.

The RTF2 was not enough of a change form the Gen3 guns for me to get all that excited. I really have no issues with my Gen3 Glock 19.

Absolutely. Both of mine have been excellent. I was intending to buy another G19 and a 34 but am so pleased my my two Gen 4 17's that I am waiting for the Gen 4 version before buying any more Glocks.

maybe applying some "Agrip" stuff to that side, as a less permanent fix?

How about very light wet sanding?

I think very light sanding in just the area that rubs is the way to go. The RTF2 is great once the gun is in hand and feels really good when you're shooting.

i decided to get the rtf2 instead of waiting for the gen 4. i like the agressive texture better than the gen 4's.

you can carry IWB too. the texture somewhat breaks in after some shooting anyway. i IWB'd it when i first got it too, and no snags or painful rubbing. might be different for others, as everyone's tolerances as well as body shape differ.

On a side note, I've limp wristed the piss out of a G19 and never had problems. Never the less know it was a big enough problem to not consider Glocks anymore.

Then again, I only know of success stories with G21's too.

I'd stick with the Generation 3 myself. I don't think the G17's mechanical operation needed any design improvements, but I'm just a random guy on the internet.

I have a G19 RTF2 and I have no problems with it IWB. It is my favorite Glock so far (haven't tried the Gen 4 G17s yet) and the grip is an improvement, for me.

I'm currently running the - connector, G17 smooth trigger, and Warren two-dots on my Gen3. Do any of you know if these mods will work on the Gen4? I'm confident the sights will work but I haven't heard about the connector or smooth trigger being available, assuming the current offerings won't work in a Gen4.

I'm really approaching this from the standpoint of a range/class gun and a carry gun. I like the smoothness of the Gen3 grip from a carry standpoint and think the RTF2 would be great for range/class work. This would allow me to keep the same recoil impulse between the two.

I'm just not so sure the Gen4 9mms will be as reliable as the Gen3 based on comments from Larry Vickers and Doc GKR. I also don't want to get one that could be more prone to limp wristing as my wife will shoot this some too.

I'm still going to wait until the NRA Convention next month and see what I find there. Thanks for all of the feedback!

It comes with the smooth face trigger and the connector drops in. The sight setup hasn't changed.

I assume you mean the 17 comes with the smooth face trigger, not the 19; I'm interested in a 19. However, if the Gen4 19 comes with a smooth face trigger that'd be great.

Should be drop in if it doesn't come with.

my local glock armorer has done a few.

i've also found forum posts with google where others have done it. the gen 3 trigger/trigger bars are interchangeable with the gen4's. no fitting required. :)

i was referring to the gen4 17/22's.

however, the gen3 trigger mechs will also drop into the gen 4 19/22's when they come out.

call glock tomorrow, they'll confirm all this.

It sounded like you were saying that the Gen4 G19s did not come with smooth faced triggers to me and I was asking how you know.

I know about the Gen G17 - I have one.

After debating this for a few days, I decided to go with a Gen3 19 RTF2. I got a good deal on it and I'm just not sure how reliable the Gen4 19s will be in the first batch. I fondled a Gen4 17 and the grip didn't feel that much better to me. I don't have a problem with the size of the grip so the changeable back straps weren't really an issue. The RTF2 is rough but it was nothing a little sandpaper didn't cure. After working on it for a little while the grip feels great; not rough like sandpaper anymore but it has more texture than the standard Gen3. I wore it around the house some this evening in an MTAC and although I can tell a difference in texture it wasn't uncomfortable. I plan to install a set of Warren's on it this weekend and then put a few boxes through it. I believe I'm going to be very happy with it, I can adjust to a different grip easier than having doubts about a Gen4 if it were to have some issues out of the box.

Thanks everyone for your input.
