Finally got my Hk45C out to the range today. Bought it used with Heinie Straight 8 night sights. The Range I shot at limited minimum distance to 25' so all groups were shot at 25.'

Initial Impressions:

The slim backstrap made the gun very pointable. Where-ever I pointed was where my sights were aligned. Instinctive and intuitive much like the 1911. The grip of the HK45C however, is not as comfortable as the fullsize HK45 or P30. I'm still on the fence about the Heinie Straight 8s--they're supposedly faster than 3 dot sights but the 2 dot system takes some getting used to. Also, the front sight is somewhat hard to pick-up so I painted it orange.

One thing I do not like about the HK45C is small capacity. 8rds of .45ACP with the same size as my commander 1911. The only advantage over the 1911 is the DA/SA trigger and decocker.

Range results:

Average Group:

5 shots at 25 feet, slow fire, offhand. (The 2nd concentric circle is about ~3.6")

Best 5 shot group at 25 feet, slow fire, offhand

20 shot pattern, 25 feet. Fast aimed fire. (Bang, reset, obtain sight picture, bang)

8 shots in double taps at 25 feet.

Overall decently satisfied, but I definitely need more range time to get used to the trigger.

oh?
i know that isn't the case with the USP45 and USP45 compact. i thought the HK45 and 45c used the same mags as the USPs

The 45c uses USP compact mags and the fullsize are same pattern just longer.

I don't know if I'd describe two kinds of trigger pulls on the same pistol and a decocker as an "advantage".

Why not? It may work for him. He can carry cocked and locked, TDA, or TDA with safety engaged. To me, that's versatility.

Aside from versatility, I can carry in DA mode, which is supposedly safer should something snag the trigger while reholstering. I can also do a press-check without needing to disengage the safety--small things like that which, imo, makes the gun more ideal (for me) to carry. Don't get me wrong, I still love my 1911s.

Haha, thanks for the sale my friend.

I think HKs in 45 are miles ahead of 1911's now-a-days. But that's just my .02 cents. :)

What did you use to paint the front sight?

The 45c uses USP compact mags and the fullsize are same pattern just longer.

are full size USP 45 mags the same as HK45 fullsize mags?

i looked into USP45's and compacts awhile ago and was disappointed that the mags weren't compatible.

IIRC, the USP45 mags are only compatible with the USP45 full-size line--that is the USP45 mag works with the USP45Tac, USP45 elite, but needs a new floorplate to function with the MK23 (Someone correct me if i'm wrong).

The USP45 full size mags will NOT work with an HK45 (too fat) or USP45C (too fat).

The USP45C mags WORK with the HK45C. In short, the HK45 mags seem like they're slimmer USP45 mags.

I was able to cycle rounds from a HK45 mag in to a USP45, but the USP45 failed to lock back with the HK45 mags. I have not fired a USP45 with a HK45 mag in it.

In short, as far as I know:

HK45 Mags work in HK45Cs and USP45Cs.

The Hk45C and USP45C 10 rd mags are HK45 mags with a floorplate that comes up high to the grip. You can convert these mags to HK45 mags by buying a new floor plate.

USP45 full size mags are limited to USP45 full size models. (AFAIK)

I wish someone would have told me this earlier--the doofus @ the gun shop told me the HK45C only took HK45C mags, when in fact HK45 mags work. Hence I spent $110 on HK45C 10 rd mags, when I could have bought HK45 mags which would have been compatible with both of my Hk45s instead of just the C.

I'll probably call HK customer service somewhere down the line and order new floor plates for the HK45C mags.

What did you use to paint the front sight?

I used brightsights:

http://www.brightsights.com/index.shtml

However, I paid $35 shipped for the paint set with luminous paint--and the luminous paint barely glows at all. Furthermore, the paint itself congeals in to this putty like substance, which looks like it will come off after say, 5-8 cleanings. In other words, your money may be better spent going to the craft section of Walmart and buying brush + paint + shish-kabob sticks (to cover up the tritium vial when painting).

USP45 mag feed lips are slightly smaller than MK23 feed lips.

What I mean was I covered the tritium w/ the shish-kabob stick while painting, to avoid painting over the night-sight vial.
