View Full Version : Foreward grip, is closer to the barrel better?

Considering the bulk of possible configurations one may have on the 6 of the forend of an AR, is it better to reduce the amount of gear to keep the hand closer to the barrel for control?

I'm thinking of a Magoul Moe with AFG, but it just looks chunky, but it aslo provides the combination of what I am looking for in a forend.

Thoughts?

I much prefer the AFG over any VFG I've tried. I find I have better control over the front of the rifle when driving the gun from target to target. YMMV, though.

I don't get it. What's with the link to the same thread?

Edit: Nevermind, I get it now...

IMO, I have far greater control of the weapon with my support hand further out on the rail. It is basic physics. Of course we may need to use alternate holds at times but being further out makes me faster at transitioning from target to target with starting the rifles movement to the next target. Also I am able to stop on the target quicker with less over travel from momentum due to less mass in front of the support hand. I also have greater control over managing recoil and muzzle rise, which is almost non-existent.

I will say that the AFG is not a great choice for everyone. If you do not have a grip and shooting style that is conducive to the concept behind the grip than it may not be for you. Even though I have maintained a shooting style like this for several years, I always felt my VFG's (stubby was my preference) always fit my needs. I like Magpul products for the most part but I resisted the AFG just because of the Magpul nutswingers who purchase without even knowing why they are purchasing an item or never even shoot their weapons (not really talking about anyone here). I did break down and put an AFG on the last rifle I built and I really really like them. I have since put them on numerous rifles.

As for the MOE fore end, it isn't my thing. It is an economical option that is better than a stock fore end if you need to add accessories but for myself it is not long enough. I do have one that I put on my Son's Noveske and he likes it, but he is only 6 years old and likes pretty much anything gun related. :D

I prefer a the foreward hold closer to the bore. My DD Middy came with a VFG. I used it with the "thumb break" method, i never held it like a stick. I now have the Magpul AFG on it and I like it so far.

I do agree with some who say the AFG is not for everyone. Its best to get one and try it out. You can always sell it later and not be losing to much money. Kinda like a rental fee.

Good Luck

That makes sense. But my original point was about the distance from the palm of your hand to the barrel using an AFG, escpecially on a Magpul MOE. The pics I've seen make it look as if it puts your hand further away from the barrel. I am not sure if this would be an issue, but it would seem that having the hand closest to the barrel would give better control. This is alltheory on my part.

The further from the rifle you keep it, the better. :p

Probably not a feesible option with the MOE handguard, but the Gear Sector handstop is incredible. What you could do is put continuous rail sections on the bottom of the MOE with the GS handstop, then cover the unused rail sections with XTM panels (XT panels are too low for the GS hs, XTM fit it better.)

Might look and feel weird, I don't own the MOE so I'm just throwing this out there.

I didn't like the AFG because there wasn't anything solid enough to pull back on. I like to pull the rifle into my chest.

I like to pull the rifle into my chest. This was the first thing I noticed with the AFG having been a long time stubby grip user as a handstop. Because of this with the AFG I naturally wrapped my index finger around the front stop of the AFG to give more rear pressure. Works well, just in case you want to give it a try. :)
