As many of you have read, we taught a basic Defensive Pistol class at Tusco Rifle Club: https://www.m4carbine.net/showthread.php?t=52218

On April 30th, we started our Defensive Carbine class. Just like the pistol class, there is little to no carbine training going on in our area so we decided to do something about that.

Sgt. Watson of the T-County SO helped me run the class (which I am grateful for). We had about 24 shooters come out for our class. Like the pistol class, this one was FREE to the club members as well.

The week prior to the class, we saw a lot of the students come into our shop for mag pouches and slings. For whatever reason, they all had DPMS rifles. The castle nut on all of them were not staked. One came off with no effort and one of the others would NOT comes off with a cheater bar and heating it with a torch. I have no idea what DPMS did to this castle nut, but it ain't coming off. One more reason to not buy a DPMS. ;)

In the class, we discussed safety, operating in groups with a carbine and trigger finger discipline. There were about 3-4 Vietnam era slings (standard GI). Everyone wants to point their muzzles at their melon's! No idea why this is. So after asking them all if they wanted to shoot themselves in the head or the foot, they all pointed their muzzles down. ;)

We covered the main types of zero's (25, 50 and 100) and had them all confirm their weapons POA/POI.

Next was stance, grip, different types of "ready" position (high, low, etc).

We covered three types of kneeling positions and prone. We also laid to rest the fact that the magazine can be used as a monopod when shooting in the prone position.

Much like the pistol class, most people learn to shoot by themselves and or by watching TV/Movies. They also tend to have ZERO idea what is quality and what isn't. "No, you don't have to buy everything UTG makes and strap it to your rifle."

All and all, the class went well and look forward to the next one in May.

How did the HK91 ( think that's what is) do?

It was a Cetme clone I believe (not sure if the owner even knew what it was).

The gun ran pretty well and the guy was one of the better shooters. We shot under 100rds though. I hope to see him at our next class.

I also told him that he was shooting a man's gun (.308). He got a laugh out of that.

On Saturday, we finished our second DC2 class. A good turn out as usual with 22 shooters present.

We covered offset's again (as many forget about them), turns and the Emergency reloads.

Everyone learned something and had a good time.

I would like to thank Tusco Rifle Range for letting us use their facility and Sgt. Watson from the T-County SO for his assistance.

Looks great! The more I see of others ranges the more I realize mine SUCKS. Nothing but NRA range nazi's.... I actually got asked to lock a bolt back on a rifle with no magazine that was in my rifle bag...

Looks like a great get together with much learned by those who participated. Nice job!

The range we use is VERY big into the NRA (range of the year in 2008 I believe).

The club Presiident is very pro Defensive shooting and an AR15 fan. So when I approached him about doing these classes, they were all for it. Because of this, we are left alone to do whatever we want and no one has any heartburn.

Thanks much.

We want people to get comfortable with the fundamentals so that they can take a professionally taught course and not feel like "that guy."

We have quite a few lefty shooters in the class. We really try to teach them the correct ways to run their guns (in a right handed world).

Grant,

Are you planning to have anymore of these classes? I'm 7 hours away, but would be more than willing to make the drive if you guys have room for another shooter. Maybe that sounds crazy, but there are no opportunities like this where I'm at (or at least I haven't found them yet). I'm somewhat new to the AR and I'm planning to take some classes, but sure would like the opportunity to cut my teeth at a gathering like the one you're having. Not only do I not want to be "that guy", but I want to be able to get the biggest bang for my buck when I shell out the cash for a class.

Went to my first Carbine on Friday. Can't emphasize how helpful it was just to get time to practice. Up here in Cleveland my range options are a 10-yard indoor range with strict rules or Grand River with 50 and 100 yard bench shooting (5.56 is banned on the 25 yard line because people have complained that it's "too loud"), so the chance to get out, do timed reloads, el presidente drills, etc. is invaluable. Besides this and Tactical Carbine Nights (https://www.m4carbine.net/showthread.php?t=55276), I never get to take my baby out to play.

Identified more gear issues (with a tac reload, some of my mags are just off enough that I don't have the leverage or grip to properly seat them, even downloaded to 28-rounds) which is both good and bad. Bad because 100% of my gear doesn't work flawlessly 100% of the time but good because it's better to find out what works and what doesn't when the bullets are only flying in one direction (at cardboard).

There were a few targets which didn't get any 5.56 attention during drills, so it'd be nice to see more folks come--I drive an hour and 45 minutes just to see Grant's rain mojo twice a month.

It's open to non-members, although Grant asks that you RSVP via e-mail once the date's set (just so they don't get overwhelmed). It's $10 for non-members (goes to the range) and whatever you feel like tipping Grant and Ben (who are doing this for free). But if you plan on shooting one of Grant's stakes, you better bring a extra $10 tip or so.

The last class I shot 50-55 rounds. But the classes build on one another, so the round counts might crawl upwards. 150 should give you way more than you need, but Grant's the one with the list of drills so he could give you a more solid number. (Make sure you bring an extra mag to keep empty for emergency reload drills, malfunction drills, etc.)

For what it's worth, during the most recent pistol class (yesterday) I think I went through a little under 100 rounds.

Also a small group this month (12 shooters). It was nice for us because we could run a single string of shooters but there was definitely room for more folks.
