Since I was frustrated in my quest to purchase a BCM M4 14.5" upper by the dreaded out of stock notice, I decided on this.

It is a BCM Mid Length with a DD Omega 9 free float rail already installed for $699.00 plus shipping.

Tell me what you guys think.

Is this your first/only AR? If so, I think this one is a better choice. If not, I'd wait for what you want in the 14.5".

I have gone back and forth on the issue of the pinned muzzle attachment on 14.5" barrels over the years and I finally came to the conclusion that as an only or a first AR I would prefer a user-removable muzzle device but as a second or third, the 14.5" with pinned device can be a nice thing to have.

Why do you say that, Rob. Are you assuming that at some point you will want to change the muzzle device and you want to retain the option?

My first AR was a CMMG 14.5" with a pinned Phantom - I loved the thing. The only reason I sold it was because the barrel was SOCOM profiled (bought it because I didn't know any better at the time) and I don't need any excess weight for the type of shooting I'm doing.

My 2nd upper was a BCM 16" carbine and I love it. Next on the list is a BCM 14.5" LW :D

People change, technology changes, needs and wants change. If you're just going to have one gun I think it's better that the gun is more easily modified as those things change.

+1

I think you new upper is more idea than what you where originally going to get. Only thing I would have done differently is get the DD 12"Lite rail, but nothing wrong with the Omega.

Anyone who would need or want to change their needs with a AR will more than likely have more than 1. Isn't that whole reason to buying a new AR. See dear this one has XXXXX and mine has YYYYY. No dear I can't just change it out on the one I already have.

A mid-length 16" is the bees knees as far as a 'jack of all trades' AR.

If you get the the point where you need a more accurate rifle (longer, etc) you'll be able to elloquate the why.

If you ever want shorter, as in SBR, the upper here doesn't really factor in and that road is distinct,

This is a rock solid choice. I own one (sans rail).

It's a BCM Middy. Can't go wrong with that.
My personal choice would have been the 14.5" with pinned FH. But only because I have others already. I sold my 14.5 last year. Need another now and it will more than likely be a BCM.:D

I have this same upper, and I love it! My favorite so far. I think it's an excellent choice.

It's what you really want right? They'll be back in stock before you know it....and you'll be glad you waited. :D

Personally I prefer the one you bought over the one you were thinking of. But of course that is just personal preference.

ghost- great choice ,i have 2 16 bcm mids ,1s.s. and 1 reg, GREAT UPPERS, BUT i would go with the ddlite rail, i think it to be a stronger system.also the 14.5 mid is the best of the bunch,in my opinion.the balance is incredible, skinja

No Delta ring on that Omega 9 - must be an Omega X.

No question about continual changes. My personal list of "catch and release" AR configurations and parts is testament to that. Thank God for the EE! :D

Having said that, I have the 14.5" middy with the pinned A2X and I think I am set on this configuration for a while. I can live with the lack of easy changes to the muzzle device for an overall shorter and lighter package that doesn't require going NFA.

Ghost - I think you will be fine with the 16" or 14.5" but if you want the 14.5", wait it out. I think there have been 3 releases of the 14.5" from BCM since they first started selling them in March. It shouldn't take them long to get more in stock.

Well I decided I am not going to buy the BCM middy after all. I am going to wait for the 14.5 M4 to get back in stock for the lower I intend to put it on.

In the mean time I bought a Spikes Middy upper from another member here for my S&W lower. I am calling it my Spike & Wesson. :D

Saw this on their new products page. Seems like an awesome precision upper.
