Evil black gun to Evil not so black gun

There apears to be alot of painting going on, so I hope to learn from others adventures.

I know I can take a dirty rifle and hit it with a coat of any paint that is close in color to the current environment and it will work for a limited time being.

But if I want a general cammo, that is not going to chip and flake on the first day, what are the steps to get a good looking job? Can I use a can of general paint from the store or do I need something special?

I guess what I am saying is I don't really care about a scratch here or there, but I don't really want this gun to peal, and I don't want to be back complaining about how I should have done X.

Sorry, I need to clarify, what do you do to clean the gun prior to painting so that the paint says.

cheap brake cleaner from walmart...hose it down to get all the oils off.
