Awesome little shottie. What is the barrel length and magazine capacity?
Thanks. It's a 14" barrel, 5 rounds of 2 3/4 inch in the magazine.
My Stevens takedown Trunk Monkey

With its old school sling. Rides in my luggage when traveling.

Very cool. I need to keep my eyes open for a take down Model 12.
I spotted a vintage 1974 Ithaca model 37 at a local shop. It looked like it had the potential for a new "Home Defender," so I did the paper work and took it home.
http://i42.photobucket.com/albums/e305/smedley_01/Ithaca37Project1.jpg
After much elbow grease, and a few more dollars, my hopes were realized with the finished product.
http://i42.photobucket.com/albums/e305/smedley_01/Ithaca37Project4.jpg
Also, I've read much banter about the so called "Slam-Fire" capability of early model 37's.
The so-called "trigger Disconnector" feature.
From my examination the Hammer is tripped while going into battery by a secondary sear on the slide stop.
So wouldn't that make it a slide stop disconnector?
Cheers!
Sweet Ithaca! I have a soft spot for model 37's. I would love one like that! I'd like to know some more details about all you did to it, especially about the sights.
Bullitt, thanks, I've always like Ithaca 37's myself. Come to think about it, I like just about everything John Browning developed or helped design.
I carefully cut the barrel to 19" with the time tested hacksaw method. Deburred and smoothed everything up to look nice.
Blasted the major components with aluminum oxide to prep the surface for a Dura-Coat "Parker" finish.
The furniture is Choate. You don't have all the stock options you'd have with the 870's, 500's, et al.
Drilled and tapped the barrel and receiver for Sage International Ghost Ring Sights.
The holes go thru the receiver and directly into the extractor slot, so you'd need to shorten the screws accordingly. The front sight requires one 8 X 32, the rear is one 8 X 32 and one 6 X 40.
It's unclear to me why the rear screws couldn't be the same size?
No instructions were included with the Sight set I got, but it was readily apparent what needed to be done.
Brownells Tech Support is mailing me a copy of the instructions, but I didn't really need them.
I actually took pics as the project progressed, but that would require a thread all its own.
Off to the range tomorrow to sight in. I can't wait!

That Stevens Trunk Monkey--
I'd take that over all the Benellis I could carry!
I was always surprised there's not a little sub-industry with spare parts and services especially for those great old guns. When my Dad was 16 or so he shot a deer in the U.P. There was a city boy in the area on a hunting trip who had got skunked. He found out Dad had a nice buck (taken with a 12-gage round ball) and wanted to give Dad $20 for it, but he didn't have it on him, so he gave Dad a brand-new Stevens 20 gage that he would come back for the following year and give Dad the $20..... but he never came back.
That woulda been 1931-ish.

There are lots of spare parts for the takedowns without needing a new parts industry. I think the only reason they don't still exist is the hand fitting required. I paid $240 for that one last year.
It also has no interlock--hold the trigger and jack the slide. It slamfires as soon the breech locks.
Ned Christiansen
01-07-11, 12:43
That's no slamfire, technically speaking-- there is actual an auto sear kind of thing that keeps the hammer from dropping until the bolt is locked.
Great old guns..... love to find one just like it for $250!
MichaelZWilliamson
01-07-11, 12:59
Yes, the breech actually locks before the hammer drops.
Guy here at the Indy show specializes in them. He usually has several in 12 and 20.

Huglu is one of the famous brands in Turkey and users tell that they are really satisfied. Side by side and over and under shotguns are said to be famous in forums but I really do have no idea about hunting and sporting type shotguns.
Huglu Cooperative produced/produces shotguns under Huglu, Armsco, CZ, Orvis and Dehaan brands
Yildiz produces the Yildiz brand
Khan produces the Mossberg "Silver Reserve" brand
Akus produces the Smith and Wesson "Elite" boxlock brand, and the same sidelock for both Kimber "Valier" and for Webley & Scott "3000 Series" brands.

I ordered it from a Benelli LE dealer; only took 9 months to come in. If you are willing to pay $350 - 400 for one they pop up on gunbroker every couple of months and you can get it right away.
As far as its legality, I believe it is since its pump, some say with 922r it isn't with the mag extension, but in another month or so, it won't be an issue either way since I am making an SBS out of it.
I agree about the LOP on the standard PG stock. The collapsible one has 5 positions, and I shoot it on 3, and I'm 6'3".

Sweet. The LOP on the stock drives me bonkers. I'm 5'11", and it's like trying to ride a motorcycle with Ape-Hangers.
Despite being one of the finest shotguns I've ever had the pleasure of shooting, stock issues aside, I'm thinking about ditching it for an 870P.
The stock is nice, but that is some serious scratch. Since you're on track to NFA that thing, I don't see it as a bad investment whatsoever. For my needs and purposes, I'm leaning heavily towards givin' her the boot.

Picture was taken about a year ago when I was shooting my dad's 870. I made the motivational frame after my dad gave me the idea and we both got a nice laugh out of it. I'm not sure if the language is acceptable but after seeing some of the post around here I'm guessing my non-directed use for humor will slide.

How heavy is that bulldozer rail?
The Bulldozer runs about 3.25 pounds. It is heavy. Another issue is that it is VERY tall and rather wide, especially with covers.
It looks like it should be in a sci-fi movie.
That was pretty much the impetus for the design. It is cosmetic feature for the most part as the size and weight make it rather impractical. It was meant to provide a unique look to the shotgun it is on. Some people are into that.
Wow! These shotguns look awesome. I will be posting mine here soon, still doing a few more mods to it! Keep em coming, thanks!

That would have to be an extremely far forward cheek weld. I've never seen anybody shoot like that.

Thanks.
The old weaponlights used to come with the strap, and the front had a small pad to prevent the knuckle slap that a lot of people complain about now. I haven't incorporated the pad, but I like having the strap.

Two questions for ya. One, how'd you get a rail on the pump? Two, how'd you mount a shell carrier on the stock.
Looks like a pretty fun shotgun to have.

I had to do a little surgery, it's a common plastic rail piece, I disassembled the fore end grip and relieved a little material from the inside so the screw heads would clear the actual slide part that slides over the mag tube.
the shell carrier is a "take off" from a side saddle carrier that normally mounts to the receiver. I just used normal wood screws to mount it to the stock.
I'm not too sold on the shell carrier yet, it does present some issues when shooting left handed, more work is in the future.

Was out shooting this Rem 870 MCS yesterday. Its configured with the 14" bbl, modified Rem choke, Speedfeed stock, +2 extension (3+2+1) The MCS has a shorter tube that only holds 3 rounds and when used with the 10" cyl bore is flush with the mag tube.

Wow! Who did the work?
I did all the cosmetic stuff. Refinished it Olivedrab and Tac Black, custom made a survival Stock, custom made the front handguard and the grill work. I added a Tromix oversized Charge Handle, Custom made the front sight from a Saiga Rifle, added a MD Arms Grip, MD Arms V Plug, Cstom made the Triggerguard, and I also moved the Fire Control Group forward myself, I cut the Barrel to 12 inches myself also. Since I am using this as a house gun, I gave it to the master himself do make it as reliable as possible (Jack Travers at JT Engineering). Jack moved my Gasblock back, custom made a new op rod, tune the extractor and tuned the Bolt. Now I can bet my life on this Gun. This baby eats everything I feed it, even low Brass Shells. I practice with Birdshot since I go through hundreds of rounds, its cheaper, and I keep the top end stuff for self defence.

If you want to you can scroll down and just check out the pics, but I’m going to share the whole story behind this.
My maternal grandfather, whose name was Johnnie, died in December of 1952, leaving behind a wife and two teenage daughters. They couldn’t run the farm without him, so they sold off just about everything they could and moved into the nearby town of Harrodsburg, Kentucky. This particular gun was sold to his brother, who later passed it on to his own son. My mother, who was very close to this particular cousin, let his widow know that if she were going to be getting rid of any of his guns (as they have no children interested in them) that my mother would like me to have her father’s gun. She loved her father very dearly and was a bit of a tomboy, so she has many fond memories of going hunting with him on their farm when she was a child. She’s always lamented the fact that none of her sons ever got to meet him, and seeing how I’m the only son whose interested in firearms I was the natural choice to inherit this piece. I assured her that I would love to have the gun, and to tell her cousin’s widow to name a price and I’ll pay whatever she wants. Point being: I want the gun! Fast forward a few weeks and my mother tells me that the gun is definitely mine to have, and the widow only want $150 for it. That’s it. She’s delighted to pass it on to a family member, and only wants $150 for it.
Now bear in mind that at this point I have no idea what the gun is. I only want it because it belonged to my grandfather. My mother, who knows next to nothing about guns, can only say that “it’s either a rifle or shotgun” - meaning it’s not a handgun - and that “Dad used to use it to hunt rabbits and squirrels.” I have no idea as to make, model, caliber or condition. I figure that for $150 I can’t go wrong, and I’ll have my grandfather’s gun. It will mean a great deal to me to have it, and even more to my mother. So, fast forward a few more weeks and the money has been paid and the gun is mine. It was in a 50s or 60s era brown leather case, and when I slipped the gun out of the case I almost fainted. :)
Winchester 97 Takedown. 12 gauge with a 26” barrel. Based on the serial number, it looks to have been made in 1929. It’s in fantastic condition, and I offered her more money once I knew what the gun was. But she refused, saying that we agreed on $150 and when I agreed to that I had no idea what I might be getting. In this case, I got very very lucky. And trust me, I will NEVER sell this. I wish I could get some better pics, but it was a drizzly overcast day and this is the best I could do.

Beautiful shotty, can I ask what in god's name is going on with that AR's foregrip(s)?
I was tinkering with my rifle, and had recently purchased a Magpul AFG, so for shits & giggles I decided to put on both the AFG and my old SOG Armory graphite vertical foregrip.
I originally had the SOG Armory VFG mounted and replaced it with a Surefire M900A Vertical Foregrip/Weaponlight. I have since replaced the Surefire M900A with the Magpul Angled Foregrip (AFG) and an Insight M-6 light/laser combo, placed at 2 o'clock.
I like my support hand placed forward near the front sight post for better muzzle control and the AFG assists well with this. However, I also like to bring my elbows and arms in tight for CQB and I think a VFG is better suited for this. So I decided to mount both for a little while to see if I like the set up. I do admit that it does look a bit odd to me also. I'm not sure if I like this set up or not yet, but I may get a stubby QD VFG to replace the one I have on it now.
SICK!

Remove the safety from the trigger group, degrease and paint with red Testers model enamel and a fine point paint brush. Pull a rag tightly across your fingertip and carefully wipe away any paint that ends up outside of the groove. Available at hobby stores and other stores where models are sold.

I should get it later this week! I'm not sure how to blow the pic up so if someone else is able to I'd sure appreciate it.

Nice shotty, sevin8nin! Looks like you have one of those nylon velcro-backed 7 Shell Side Saddles from 3GunGear.com. I just got one too and put it on my 14" Mossberg 590A1.

What are you using for a sling? I have a Specter Tactical adjustable 2-point sling, but I'm looking for better options.

That's an 870. ;)
You're right, my bad! I was looking at it on my I-Phone, but it's much more clear on my desktop.
snake eater: i'm using a simple non-padded VTAC 2-point sling. Plastic buckle up front, HK snap on the back. In retrospect i bought it as an experiment, cause I was using VTAC padded 2-points on rifles, but I should have got a padded one. If i'm not wearing something on or near my neck i don't like how the sling cuts in to my neck.
It does work though.
And yes, that's a 3gungear side saddle. Had a mesa long time ago and was tired of rounds shifting around in the saddle, and didn't like having to feed the saddle and the gun. The rip off nylon one works well for my purposes. Extra 'cards' of 12ga fit in AR15 mag pouches so my 'stuff' can pull double duty. Or a card can slide in to a pocket.
Definitely much easier to rip and stick 7 rounds of 12ga via nylon side saddle, then feed 6 rounds in to a shell carrier.
Or, i can take it off all together and just feed from a dump pouch or the like.

IS that an Ultimak rail? If so how did you mount it on there??
Ultimak makes a Saiga-12 version. It's a little different than the rifle Ultimaks which replace the gas tube. The shotgun version bolts over top of the gas tube and requires drilling and tapping.

Gotta go make sure it works. Should cycle just about anything now. Redrilled the gas ports and made sure they were uniform. Will put a few hundred through it then I'll cerakote it. Still debating whether to cut it up and install a Russian magwell..... Might be fun to go all the way.
Did all the work myself in the garage. Needs a good bead blast and refinish. Should look pretty good in the end.

Bad photo, but this is my simple and effective shotgun. Took a one day class with it and it ran beautifully. This is my HD weapon due to the political realities of living in CA. My AR's are for range use.
I'll be getting a reduced LOP stock, as the standard one is pretty long :o

Very nice. I hear you on the "living in CA" thing. For this reason I keep my ARs in the safe and my Scattergun Technologies Standard in the closet.
I teach shotgun tactics to fellow officers and always recommend the 12 gauge rides in your personal vehicle if you choose to take a long gun on the road (I do). The fallout from using an AR on someone in this state might be insurmountable.

I picked up a 14" Benelli M4 and I love it. The balance on it is amazing. Same price as the full size model only difference is the waiting time for ATF.

Where did you get it at the same price as a non-nfa m4? Everywhere I have looked people are selling them at a ridiculous price.
Impact Guns. I got lucky though and got the last one they had. Waiting on ATF now.

I just picked up a brand new Mossberg 930SPX on Friday and can't wait to get her to the range!
http://tapatalk.com/mu/47eb4c49-0f4f-801a.jpg
Now I won't have to use my 14" Mossy 590A1 at local matches and I actually may be more competitive! In my last local club 3-gun, I came in 4th out of 26 competitors, missed 3rd by 1.6 seconds, probably because I was the only one using a SBS pump shotgun and the top 3 were all using semis.
I have the Mossberg 930SPX as well. Mine has a larger safety and sling mounts. Looking for the right light.

I didn't know people way up there in SD knew about cool stuff like that! Just kidding. Love the pheasant hunting up there around Winter, SD. I used my FN SLP MK1 last time I went pheasant hunting in KS. Shoulda seem that game wardens face when he checked us. Anyways nice shotgun you got there.

This is my Mossberg 590A1 18.5" shotgun I picked up directly from Mossberg after taking their Armorers course for the 500/590. $278 ! I added the shorter Hogue stock and forend, a Mepro night sight front and a MI single point sling mount, GEAR Sector single point sling, a side saddle and a larger safety.
I have a Mossy just like it, and it is a great shotgun for the price. I have similar modifications to mine, but there is something you might want to consider...

+2 by Choate.
As the night of the living dead approaches, it's time to break out the 'boomsticks', regardless if you bought it at S-mart or not... ;)
Here is my main one, Mossberg 590A1 registered Short Barrel Shotgun, 12ga with Speedfeed Stock... Bought this as a police trade in for $400 a couple years ago...

New kid on the block is my Benelli M2 Tactical, 12ga. Added on magazine extension, US made Mesa Tactical pistol grip stock, US made follower, and still have night sights and the Mesa Tactical rail to install... 922r compliant, BTW...

I like that look. You don't see too many PG SGs with wood.
Is that a Browning? It looks like the pump only has one rail on the left side. Does it? My Mossberg had two, one on each side.

I was originally thinking of installing a Surefire Forend with a weapon light on my 870, but when I bought the Knoxx recoil reducing butt stock, the package came with a forend also. I wasn’t planning on keeping it, so I decided this would be a perfect chance to try my hand at stippling. I used an old wood burning tool that I had, and I was so happy with the way it turned out I decided to keep it and scrapped the idea of the Surefire.

It's a 20" barrel.

Thanks! ...it's a 20" barrel. Longer than I wanted, but I'm a big guy so it's not that bad. ;)
How do you like the AFG on the pump?
I was hesitant at first, because they are used mainly on semi-auto shotguns. But after seeing a few installed on pumps and the owners giving good reviews on it, I decided to give it a try. So far I love it! Feels very natural and allows me to get a good comfortable grip. I used to have a KAC handstop installed which worked great as well...but I think I'm gonna leave the AFG on there.

Cool, I'll have to see about giving it a try. My biggest concern would be my hand slipping off during the forward stroke of the pump mechanism.

There's a little bit of a handstop on the front of the AFG to help prevent that. Hasn't happened to me yet, don't think it will. ;) I'm using the AFG-1 opposed to the new AFG-2 because it's a little beefier if that helps at all.

Mossberg 590, 20" bbl, 8+1, Ghost Ring Sights, Elzetta flashlight mount, Streamlight Polytac LED light. Side saddle is industrial strength Velcro and a 7 rd ESSTAC shot shell card. I push up the last 2 shot shells to clear the trigger for my left hand. Shortened LOP to 13.5" (makes a big difference).

This is all I have for now. I just got the idea to use that old USGI gas mask bag as a thing to hold shotshells. I had it lying around, might as well put it to good use. Gonna see how it works for me at the trap range to see how it normally works in an easy environment. Then I'll take it from there.
