View Full Version : Vintage AR and Clone pic thread.....
OK guys, let's show those vintage AR's and clones thereof.
This is my one safe queen.....
Colt SP-1 manufactured the first full year of production, 1964.
It came with the original Colt 3X scope.

I like the price tag.
I like the price tag.
The rate of inflation from 1966 to 2010 is 581.41%
If you take $189.50 in 1966 $$$ and multiply it by 5.8141, the sum is $1101.77 in 2010 $$$... The price of a Colt AR really has not changed much in the last 40 + years...

I always love looking at retro ads for pretty much any consumer products but especially for firearms! Oh how time's have changed, to think Colt use to market these to the "hunter, camper, or collector".
Reminds me of when I was a kid growing up in the 80's looking at through my dad's gun rags at the old HK ads and the like...then came Bush Sr.'s '89 ban. :(
My 'retro' slash 'Israeli' build... I sold it to a coworker but working on getting it back.

Love the IDF and USAF guns. They've been kicking around so long and parts keep getting upgraded that there's no telling what kind of configuration you'll run into.
It ran great, too... 1500 rounds in an 8 hour period with minimal cleaning, just more lube.
I sold it because of my divorce... women.

I believe they were around $450 in 1984. But ammo in real terms now, even after the Obama runup, is cheaper.....as are good mags.
I'd love to have a 20" A1 upper with a 1/7 or 1/8 twist .750" or .625" profile. Those original handguards were quite comfortable.
.223 ammo was around $300/m in 1984. In 1984 IIRC a AK (Maadi) was $1300 or so, and a Galil was $1700. Cheapest ammo was $100/m for AK around 1984-1990, and .223 was $170/m around 1997 until 2001.

Stickman,
I love that photo of the M-16 and flak jacket. I also admit to having a couple of dozen Colt 20-round mags around the house. So darn handy to drop into a pocket.
That's old school cool, with the flack jacket. Thanks for posting it!

Not the best pictures in the world but here's some of my 601 and late 603 rifles. Still working on an early 603 and 604 build but it's just a matter of saving my pennies for a couple of Nodak Spud XM16E1 lowers.
http://i137.photobucket.com/albums/q236/USMCGruntUSAFCATM/Firearms/Rifles/AR-15%20601%20series/DCP_1761.jpg
NOT the way a 601 retro should look. Since that picture, I got rid of that nasty A2 lower and it's now wearing a NDS 601 lower

My old MCRD rifle rag with all the parts of my 601 laid out. Yes, I know the buffer isn't an Edgewater but it's dang hard to spend that kind of money on one. Oh well, maybe one of these days I'll find one for a good price.

A quick snapshot of AR progression through the years. I'll have to update that a bit when my XM16E1 and USAF M16 clones are completed.
I'm always hesitant to call this one a retro since for a 653 clone there are a few things wrong with it. The A2 lower is a glaring problem that should be corrected (and if I ever get around to making my M16A4 clone I will probably rob this receiver to do it with and replace the receiver my 653 has with another Nodak Spud lower instead. Next is one that I overlook and that's the barrel is a 16" lightweight Colt barrel. The fact that it's a 16" versus the 14.5" of the actual 653 is one I tend to overlook since I don't want to mess with the SBR routine. The last problem I have with it is that the upper is an A1 design but a quick glance at the ejection port cover quickly shows that this part is an A2 version which wouldn't be really correct here either. Nope, no doubt about it, that lower though really has to be swapped out though.

Probably would have been easier to do this right from the start.
You have your "purist" Retro Fans, who build rifles to exacting details, then you have weapons built under what I consider "The Spirit Of Retro".
I like to think I fall into category #2 "The Spirit Of Retro".
I like to have at least one weapon which when I shoot it, it takes me back to my days in the service when I shot the M16A1. Or those early days during the phasing out of the A1, and the introduction of the A2.
I guess I fall into the 2nd category but I strive for the first. For example, I would love to have a true early 603 XM16E1 built on a Nodak Spud lower but finding those old part, especially the barrel, gas tube and Edgewater buffer is difficult and more expensive than I want to deal with. While my bolt carrier is a notched chrome and the flash suppressor is a 2nd model, things like the buffer are going to be the current design and the barrel and gas tube, yup, that's going to be a post-war part too. Now if I can ever find these parts and at a reasonable cost, sure, I'll upgrade them but for right now, I'll have to settle for a spirit of retro in some respects.

And what would one of these run you today compared to what Uncle Sam paid for them in their era? Talk about inflation! Thank Bush... lol
My very early (1964) 604 upper should be back any week now from Victor at US Anodizing and my first complete retro clone will be complete. I'll post pictures as soon as I put it together. I have 4 others in various stages of being built, but there is that stuff called money that's slowing me down. :D

Of course they were Colt only. H&R and GM Hydromatic made M16A1 rifles only, and paid royalties to Colt for every rifle produced. Every experimental rifle or carbine came out of Colt's factory.

Love the IDF and USAF guns. They've been kicking around so long and parts keep getting upgraded that there's no telling what kind of configuration you'll run into.
I qualified on some super early USAF guns that were still in service in the mid-80's. They were mix n' matched, but some of those parts belonged in collections. I wish I could have had 15 minutes with them to swap out parts...
BTW- Anyone have any info on the Son Tay Raiders Singlepoint mounts used on the GAU-5A/A's?
PM or Email me if you do.

IIRC there are pics of the Son Tay raiders with their singlepoints mounted with electrical tape.
IIRC there are pics of the Son Tay raiders with their singlepoints mounted with electrical tape.
The original mounts were a simple base with two straps over the optic. The tape was placed over the mount for insurance. They were not held on simply by tape.
Dustin
The tape is to cut down on contrast and break up the color outline, cammo if you will. Not for insurance. Many weapons were covered in 100 MPH tape, mine included to break up the contrast and outline of the weapon, some weren't.

Everything I've read indicated that electrical tape was used to make the scope mounts more secure. I don't see how black tape could improve the camouflage on a black rifle.

JOHNO,
Those are some awesome pictures. Gets me to thinking about my Dad in his days in the 'nam! Man, I miss him. :( I'm going to build a retro now.
Don't know if a gray A2 counts, but here's my stop-gap 727 clone. The barrel and bolt are temporary until my 6921 barrel gets pinned. Also, oddly enough, the KAC RAS is only on there because I can't find my 6-hole carbine handguards right now. The lower is wrong (from a previous build I never completed), but I haven't decided if I am going to grap a NDS A1 yet.

ETA: The upper is one I found on TOS's EE. Colt markings, "4" up front for the M4 feed ramps.

The rate of inflation from 1966 to 2010 is 581.41%
If you take $189.50 in 1966 $$$ and multiply it by 5.8141, the sum is $1101.77 in 2010 $$$... The price of a Colt AR really has not changed much in the last 40 + years...

oooooy, that is crazy how houses etc totally inflate in price, muy house in 1950's was $8,000 and was $240,000 6 years ago...,hurts:(
You were at Son Tay then?

Tape was definitely used for security, not camouflage-

Reference the Son Tay mount question...
I'm relatively sure that the "strap mount" was used at Son Tay, but I would still like some more evidence that supports that.

The Colt model 607 was tested in I believe 1965 and the XM177 and XM177E1 were adopted in I believe 1966.

found this used, but unfired, oly preban in a lgs on consignment. i corrected the unfired issue a few weeks ago and it is a tack driver. i know it is not a colt, but it is fun to shoot. i dont pull out the pelican with my p.o.f. build often and i can throw the oly in the trunk and head to the range without worrying about how i handle it, if it gets dinged or bumped, dropped, etc. i dont plan on putting it through hard use and dont worry about it going through rough use.

ETA: Thanks USMCVET! I did not get to serve unfortunately due to a chronic condition so only two years ROTC for me. I just collect the gear now.
Here is the same rifle with slightly different gear. Just experimenting for now...need to find a better place to set things up with a white background and better lighting.

I'm the kid on the left! Manifia Bay, Saudi Arabia in January 1991. A few days after my 19th birthday. We dug that damn hole with our etools. We had trenches to the left and right where we slept. First time I was ever claustrophobic. It felt like a freaking grave.

The rock-river entry stock is good to go.
Thanks Man. Good to hear. Not really retro but retro inspired. It looks like it would work well. I would have no desire to have a cut down pistol grip like on some of the 607's. I have huge paws. But the short stock would help.
The short grips weren't a production item as best as I can tell.
Someone ought to make non-telescoping versions of the original cut down A1 stocks. They aren't of too much use fully extended anyway.
I saw a photo of one and whinced. That is not where I would be saving weight and size.
Stocks and grips are definitely a personal preference thing. The Entry stocks are designed for use with body armor; i.e., they are really short - might work for you, might not. Too short for me.

Yeah I never thought my A2 was long now it seems really long. What position do you run a collapsable stock in? I am one click out. This is supposed to be like running it all the way in. This gun will be a toy not a serious go to gun.
I typically use a CAR stock one click out.

Possible, Colt currently has contracts with over 80 countries worldwide for the M16 rifle and has had contracts for decades. According to Wikipedia, Lebanon is one of those countries.

Do you have any reference pics where someone had their cleaning rod attached like that? It just seems like it is in a good place to get caught on things and poke you in the face.

Not exactly like that. Work in progress. But I've shot it with the rod on and it hasn't bugged me so far. I am pretty sure I want to change to a more secure and reusable method of attachment; inner tube or blousing rubbers or something. Unfortunately there's no FM for field-expedient accessories.
The inner tube would work well. Could the rod go below the forward assist?

Note the Grease Gun type collapsible stock. Info at the time suggested these were to fire at 1,050rpm, with all tracer ammo in a "final protective fire" type scenario.

Pezboy,
Page 208 of "The Black Rifle" has a photo from Vietnam showing a cleaning rod 'taped' (although it appears to be held on by sewn elastic bands) in the same way.
The only differences are, that it is on the left side of the carry handle, and doesn't sit as far back due to the length of the barrel, but does come to level with the charging handle.
I have seen a couple of other photos with similar placements, but can't reference them at present. There is also one on TOS in the M-16 Retro Forum on page 1 of the discussion 'Early M16 problems in Vietnam'.
Regards.

Alright, a few disclaimers here before the pics. First off, I know it is not a true M16A1 clone, in fact a bit far from it. Second, its not complete. But the story is, I got a good friend of mine into ARs last year, after swearing up and down he had no use or interest in them. Back then I got him a BCM LW middy on a lower I built for him. Needless to say, it didn't take long for him to be hooked. For his next rifle, he decided he wanted something that looked like the M16A1 he was issued in Viet Nam in '67. He also wanted it to be a good shooter, and price was a concern. We found a A1 upper at a gun show that looked like it may have never been fired. The barrel is not correct for the build, its an FN 1:7, but the look is close enough, and the function great. We added on a surplus BCG, and the triangle HG and stock. We still need the A1 pistol grip, and he is considering a Nodak lower (the lower on there now is the one from his BCM), but this rifle looks nice, and shoots well.

Thank you. To see the look in my buddy's eyes as the memories flooded back to him was priceless. Almost in tears. And to see the joy when he fired off several hundred rounds at the range was a joy as well.

I actually had to sell it not too long ago. It's currently doing duty behind enemy lines in NY State.
That is actually one of my favorite rifles.
When I was a kid in the 70s those SP1s were "it" as far as my Dad and his shooting buddies were concerned. I may have lusted after the FALs and G3s in magazines, but the SP1 was what we were all shooting at the range.
The fact that the similar looking 16A1 dominated movies and TV shows like SWAT just made it that much more iconic for me.

Very nice, thanks for sharing. Does it have an Edgewater buffer and a chrome bolt and carrier? What are the markings on the barrel betwen the fsb posts?

Not sure about the buffer. It does have a chrome bolt & carrier. Not sure if it is the original though. I will see if I can get access to it and get the markings you asked for.

I vaguely remember reading about the M16 and AR15 about 1958, in Popular Mechanics, or some similar mag.
I was surprised when I enlisted in the Army, in 1961 and they still had M1 Garands.
I got out in1964 and had still never been issued even the M14.
When did they begin to issue M16's and AR15's to the armed forces?
The M1 is a sweet weapon. Were you Infantry?

Here is a Colt 601 I found in the armory at Davis-Monthan AFB, AZ late 2010. I took about 100 pictures of all the components before I took it to the range where I shot the Air Force qualification course and did a few full-auto mag dumps. Here are a few of the pics and videos:

damn, i miss those days. Seperated back in 2010 myself. Right before I got out, we found a sealed barrel with a whole bunch of 16a1 uppers in sealed bags with the old 3 prongs on the end. Unfortunatly, they had to be shipped somewhere to be disposed of. Damn military.

Nice! I used one of the originals when I was in the Army reserve back in 1990, funny thing is that I used the a1 back in basic training :agree:
Unmarked upper was an early Colt before someone radically turned the barrel, but my is it light! This 20" is substantially less weight than a 'lightweight' mid. Olympic lower. Purchased in parts. Shoots just fine for such thin iron.

Unmarked upper (other than '535' on the carry handle) which I hope is a colt 5.56 (20" and seems 1:10 twist). Olympic lower. Purchased in parts, so not exactly sure what it all is but seems to shoot xm193 fine, and hopefully xm855 without mishap.
Nice !!
OK guys, let's show those vintage AR's and clones there of.
1. The upper is a rare find. Its a NOS COLT M16A1 complete upper. Was never fired or oiled for that matter. I oiled it up with clp and a brand new colt upper came alive. The markings date at 1969-1974
2. Nodak Spud A1 lower receiver Engraved like the COLT 603
3. New A1 stock and grip from Fulton Armory
4. DPMS LPK and a NOS A1 sling
Went to boot camp at Paris Island in Aug of 1985 . We were the last BN to use the M16A1

Very nicely done Devil Dog. Have you had a chance to shoot it? Is the bbl 1/12? I have a surplus A1 upper that is 1/12 and I've not shot it yet. I know 55gr 5.56 will work well in it.

Both are still works in progress. The A2 has a NOS upper and bbl.
The Colt M4 upper is new and the Colt bbl is used.
I'm still looking for my upper vise block. I should know better than to loan out tools.

I shoulda never clicked on this thread. Damn. Too late now.
Question: There's a pic here wherein it appears to be an actual soldier in Vietnam with an M16 that is not a "slick side." Did Colt introduce the reinforced lowers during Vietnam? I'm so used to equating the slick side M16's with Vietnam that this is not computing.

The reinforcement ridges around the magazine release button were from the 60s. The thickening of the rear part of the lower receiver where the receiver extension and butt stock attache took place in the 1980s.

My SP1, from the serial number it should be an early 80s model. When I go it, it had some horrible aluminum free float tube on it. I rounded up an older 10.5 Colt upper and swapped all the parts back to the SP1. The SP1 and the 10.5 had similar wear. The SP1 has a Geissele SSA-E and I had to rob the bolt carrier out of the old 10.5 upper. The Colt bolt carrier in the SP1 looked like it had been re-staked with a chisel. Gun weighs 5 pounds and 13 ounces as it is now.

Those are great Photo's & bring back memories, Good & Bad.
I got to my unit the second week in Nov.1967. We had the M-14, I did get to shoot it full Auto.
We got our M-16's in December 1967.
we were told they came from the Air Force. Pleiku had a Air Base. They all came in a trailer towed with a Ford Jeep.
They looked like the top photo.
Had to use a bullet to adjust the rear & front sights, I don't remember if the had a charging handle. I don't remember using one. If I did they were worthless. I'm now 65 , not twenty.
Chrome Chamber, No chrome lined barrel. All barrels were Pencil barrels & would heat up fast.
No compartment in the butt stock. Without L.S.A. oil they could get rust on them overnight.
I believe the twist rate was 1/12. Ammo, Lake City & Winchester.
I thought this was worth posting here. Interesting looking horse... First time I've ever seen it. At first, I thought it was an older run but the serial number is in the 5xxxxxx range and I've seen lowers in the 4xxxxxx with the "normal" horse we see today.

Looks right on to me. Very nice.
Picked up the '79 SP1 on Tues, my first oldie. Traded a DD V7lw for it. I made the mistake of showing the guy some optic choices and he lusted after a TR24 so tempted me beyond resisting with the second long rifle. It's a '93 Eagle Arms, pre-Armalite, 20" free float aluminum handguard. That it was a Karl Lewis design and probably the first SPR type, made it a must have. Got it today for the TRijicon and misc.

Love to hear teh story about these.
This is my 654 clone.
Built with a Daniel Defense 14.5" LW barrel. I got lucky and it was a little over 14 5/8" with the two washers and an A1 it measured over 16" so I pinned that on there and did not have to use an extended A2 I had that really would not have looked the part.
Butt stock is from tony's custom and was a mess when I got it. My friend powder coated it for me really thick and it looks much more like the real thing.

What Upper did you use?
This is very slick
22777 Picked up a parts kit from Sarco. Used an Aftermarket barrel and lower. Lower internals from Sarco This picture is a mock up before I had the original FSB installed. Since this picture I added a few colt 20 round mags and a sling. Gun is well balanced and shoots well. I prefer shooting this gun over my POF Predator 416. Also a colt lower is in the future

Just finished this tonight. I had the Nodak Spud XM16E1 lower on order for over 6 months. 1966 (or thereabouts) Colt upper with 1/12 twist 1969 barrel (chrome chamber only). I know that the smaller lower receiver bits aren't retro, and neither is the dust cover; I'll address those issues some other day.

I thought they did a really good job on the color. The surface finish is just a tad rougher than I'd like, but all of the Nodak's I've seen up close were like that. Nodak has been backordered on these for so long, and their estimate as of a few weeks ago was sometime around Christmas. Then all of a sudden, last week they said that some were ready but they had discovered a small machining error and had to correct that and refinish them. They estimated that it would take another month, but it arrived today out of the blue. Fit is very snug; well worth the wait.

In one word, SWEEEEET!
You are one very fortunate man. :)

I got the 639 from a large C3 dealer in Dallas in 2000. He just wanted to flip it and made me a descent, not great, deal on it. I have been collecting weapons for years and knew original paperwork and accessories add tremendously to an item's value. I paid him a few bucks more than he initially wanted so he would jump on my offer and not shop it around. The whole deal hinged on keeping everything together in one neat package.
The 'A1 Carbine came from a Virginia C3 dealer who was closing down his business in 2000. He told me it came out of a Virginia police department. That's all I know about it.
Sorry, i don't know what i was thinking. I somehow misunderstood and thought you had acquired it pre-86 and managed to keep everything it came with in great condition. Very cool nonetheless.

I wish I bought it pre-'86, but sadly I did not. The Dallas dealer told me he got it from the original retail owner and it was a complete package. I was able to locate the original owner. He is now a retired Texas Sheriff and bought the 639 when he was still in office and didn't use it very much. In '86 I was still living in Hawaii and couldn't purchase it even if I wanted to.
Very cool that you went as far as tracking down the original owner. Nice story to attach to an already nice find by itself. Looking forward to seeing more of your toys. :)

That commando is beautiful.
I always wanted a Colt Model 605, which was the first production carbine for the AR15 line-up. The history on these guns is that they were part of the Colt CAR-15 family of weapons, this one being the Infantry Leader's Carbine. It used a shorter barrel to help keep the overall profile of the gun more or less out of the way, while still bringing enough velocity to the table. They also introduced the standard infantry rifle Model 603 (XM16E1 and M16A1), belt-fed HBAR Light Support Weapon with bipod, Commando 607, and USAF Survival Carbine Model 608.
What plagued the Model 605 was the lack of dwell time, which reared its head in cold weather and on AUTO. A lesser known variant of the Model 605 is the 605B, with 4-way fire control group, consisting of SAFE, AUTO, SEMI, and BURST. The cool thing about the 605B's FCG is that you can naturally go from low ready to high ready into either AUTO or BURST, as the selector has a relief cut under the lever so that it clears the stops that normally keep the rotational axis on a 270 degree limit. I have a 605B project in the works based off an 80%.

http://i125.photobucket.com/albums/p57/tgus/605/605002.jpg
I used a NoDak NDS-XM16E1 partial fence lower, original slickside hard chrome bolt carrier, Type D stock, and a take off barrel from a ban-era SP-1 abortion that had a muzzle break pinned and welded. The nice thing is that it has a smooth FSB with the forge flashing removed and polished. I used NIC H Series Sniper Gray to coat the upper so it would match the lower better, with somewhat of a weathered patina.
I didn't open the gas port from .094" like some have had to do, and wanted to see if it would run the way it is on M193. I left a little more barrel length for some dwell time, since 16" RLGS guns seem to run well when gassed with M193, and I confirmed that it does in fact cycle just fine this way.

First, thank you Joseph Doucett.
Second, VERY COOL gun and great research LRRPF52.
I call mine the "Little Bastard", it is 90%+ Colt... save for the HB, FSB, and shorty triangle FHG.
http://i.imgur.com/6d3LEj6.jpg
I put it together from an M16A1 upper & lower rec., with the complete upper assembled by American Spirit Arms (Scottsdale, AZ) with their barrel & FSB. They tested it for correct FA timing. Since it rarely gets too cold in the Sonoran desert I'm not too worried about FTFFA. It is a hoot to shoot.
Its little Jewish buddy likes to go out in the desert too. With a heavy bolt it runs the 9mm out @ 780 RPM vs 1100 RPM.

Only asking my TX brother b/c I have a mint 5 digit that I bought @ Clark Custom Guns some 10+yrs ago that looks very sim.
nitmr26 is that a 4,5 or 6 digit SP1 & care to share how you scored that bounty?
This SP1 has a 5-digit serial number. I found the rifle at Elk Castle Shooting Sports in Fort Worth. It wasn't exactly a smoking deal, but it is in almost "as new" condition.
I bought my first AR-15 in 1992. It was a 1977 Colt AR-15 SP1. A few years later, I let that SP1 go in order to fund the purchase of a new Colt MT6700. Since that first SP1, I've managed to acquire a few more Colts but always regretted selling that SP1. I'm glad I could add this one to the collection.

This thread is making my checking account nervous.
Vintage/Retro ARs can be very addictive. I already have ten of them and now I have two more in the works (XM16E1 and another M16A1). I still have two others (models 604 and 605) I want to build in the next few years.

Very nice. Always nice to see another nice M16A1 clone. At some point, you may want to look into getting a Nodak Spud NDS-16A1 lower or the McKay Enterprises A1 lower. They will be more correct than the A2 lower. A couple years ago, I replaced the A2 lower I built mine on originally with a Nodak Spud lower. I am much happier with it now.

I am currently working on a CM16E1 clone and another M16A1 clone. Just waiting on lowers at this point.
The airforce was still using M16A1's in the second Iraq war.
The Army is still using M16A2s today.
