How exactly do these work? Someone i know has one for sale and someone else I know was telling me it the next best thing to having a suppressor (our states not suppressor friendly).

I was told they direct the sound away from the shooter if your shooting outdoors in such a way that ear protection is not needed.

If this true?

They are designed to be used on SBR's. You really don't need one to be honest.

Well if it does what I asked above, why wouldn't I want one?

You certainly will still need ear protection. It is still loud, just directs the sound away from you.

It doesn't do what you were told it does. The KX3 directs the muzzle blast forward, away from the shooter, but it really does nothing to reduce the sound levels. They are still very loud, and earpro is absolutely still required.

This is incorrect. You still need hearing protection.

The Noveske KX3 was designed to be used with SBR's, but they do work well on a 16" carbine.
They give a bit more dwell time to the weapon and keep it cycling correctly, and they also throw a good bit of sound downrange.

You will still need hearing protection, even with the KX3.
I have one on my 16" carbine that will soon become a 12" carbine.

Don't let anyone discourage you. If you want one, by all means get it.

Putting one on an AR that is not 10" or less is a waste of money and weight. No reason to have it, and it DOES NOT reduce sound at all.

Another thing your friend is a jackass for spouting such bullshit.

Here is mine on my 10.5" SBR

No.

Yes, partially.

Only if you are already deaf.

There is one on gunbroker.com for $99. Get it and try it out. Lots of people like them, primarily for SBRs but it does reduce side blast if standing next to your buddy while shooting. But by all means wear good ear protection.

By all means go ahead and buy one.

I have 2 of these and like them. They are appreciated by other people at the range, and, they do push quite a bit of the noise downrange. I took them off my piston AR Pistols because they had to be removed to clean the Piston assembly.

If you have ever shot out of a vehicle, from the passenger side across the driver's side seat with a shorty, you will learn to love the KX3. It sucks to blow off your rear view mirror...

This was a big lesson for me when we switched over from MP5s and M4s. The MP5 is more forgiving when in vehicles.

I see it as a good thing for PSD ops if you are in soft skinned vehicles. It takes the blast and directs it forward towards your target and away from the inside of the vehicle. The slight noise reduction is a bonus, and is more evident shooting out of a car than in in the open.

For CQB use indoors, it won't help much with the noise, but it will scare the shit out of anyone you happen to shoot at and miss.

If you shoot thru glass at close range, it tends to blow more glass away from you and towards the target.

But, I don't use one at home.

I used one for a while. It does direct the blast forward which is a good thing for a TAC team, especially for the guy next to you. It also provides back pressure which helps the SBR cycle. I know this for a fact because my 10.5" cycled great until I decided to take it off for a suppressor mount. I had to have the gas port opened up some.
It does not make it quite by any means. I'm sure some sound is directed down range but it would still be deafning.
Indoors the sound work reflect back off walls. Even a suppressor on a SBR'd 5.56 is loud indoors.

I am not usually a muzzle brake fan, however, on some 10.5" LMT's we had that were unsuppressed, the Noveske KX3 and Levang Linear Comp were useful at redirecting the blast and concussion forward. The new Battle Comp is also looking pretty darned nice and the guys who are making it are very solid: http://battlecomp.com
