Welcome to the Old Dominion! And I'd say definitely a move for-the-better.;)

Virginia is incredibly diverse for a state of its size, so there is a lot to choose from if your are able to get a good job where you want to live. My situation near Richmond has worked out well. Tidewater is just as bad as NOVA as far as congestion, but the cost of living is less and there's lots of great fishing and boating. My true heart is in the mountains though -- pretty much "came of age" in the Blue Ridge. Am currently getting psyched about going to spend a few days way down around Mount Rogers later this year.

Man, I'm an idiot; I keep forgetting about Sharpshooters after having gone there for the first time a number of weeks back.

It's not the NRA, but it's a shorter drive for me that makes more sense on weekdays and is a better overall facility than The Range in Stafford/Fredericksburg.

For sure! The lighting is pretty bad, and its hot in there, ... but its a range off 95! I try to shoot there 2-3 times a week there, and it suit me for some basic stuff. No movement though or multiples, I got my range in Culpeper that I frequent around once a week to do that!

Welcome to The Capital of the Confederacy -- you can go farther south, but ye cain't git more Suthun!:D

DeGoffs and Greentop are the two long-time standbys north of town where I live and work, but have gotten some competition over the past couple of years from the arrivals of Gander Mountain and now Bass Pro. Many of us still prefer the originals, although they are better for complete guns than supplying builds. TTI on Route 1 north of town is probably the place for that, but the owner is semi-retired so it's hard to tell when they'll be open (they also dropped their landline phone awhile back). Can't vouch for their custom work -- I've never contracted any, but have heard different things. There are also 2-3 shops in Chesterfield that I'm less familiar with, but are in the yellow pages.

The Showplace in Mechanicsville also puts on a pretty good gun show several times a year. I usually run into someone I know there stocking up. One of the regular vendors Dark Sun usually has a lot of goodies.

There's a Richmond CA???

Richmond, CA is NOT a nice town. It's a joke with some of my friends, as I just moved out from California.

I have been to Degoff's and Green Top and I will be back. As silly as some of the laws are in CA black rifle shops are everywhere there. I had 4 within 20 minutes of my house. I know I can mail order, but I prefer dealing with people.

My family has also remained in NOVA. Can't see how they stand it, but guess they're de-sensitized (as well as having the typical liberal beltway-centric mentality prevalent to the area). My visits have been fewer and fewer each year, reduced now to only at Thanksgiving.

Hope you're enjoying New Kent. My work takes me thereabouts quite often -- pretty country.

Is there any particular towns/cities in Fairfax County to avoid for these reasons? I know many are run by County Police as CLEO but also some have their own departments. Of these where will I not get signatures?

Thanks for the help and I look forward to being in this area.

Arlington Co will not sign nor will the City of Alexandria.
Fairfax Co Sheriff will sign as will the Prince William Co Sheriff will sign (this includes the City of Manassas, City of Manassas Park, Town of Dumfries, Town of Quantico which all fall under the Sheriff for Prince William Co). JSantoro

Unless rental guns are a must-have, consider going to Elite Shooting Sports in Gainesville, instead.

Opened Nov last year, fantastic facility, 2x 25yd ranges (12x lanes ea), 50yd range (12x lanes), and 100yd range (8x lanes).

If you hit VA Arms, you're >10min from ESS, and if I recall the way SS does their lane usage, ESS costs significantly less per hr. @ESS, if there's no line/waiting-list, you stay as long as you have ammo and targets to shoot. Not to put too fine a point on it, SS's whole game is old and busted...

Trijicon: I dunno. Are you talking about their offices of of Celebrate Virginia Pkwy, or the facility they share with Crucible, further out on 17N? I'm inclined to think no-go in both cases.

F3 Tactical is the best store around for awesome kit. It's in Chantilly. There's a new gun store in the same shopping center called 50 West Armory I think. VA Arms is definitely the one to hit if you're on limited time, but I try to visit both when I'm there (haven't been since the new LGS went it). The NRA museum is also worth going to if you've got the time, it's awesome.

Definitely get to the NRA Museum in Fairfax - they also have a great range, but for obvious reason they are all over you at their range - check hours and must take a "safety test" before shooting.

In Centreville there is Blue Ridge Arsenal - they rent full-auto but their ammo. Across the way on 01-03 January is the Nations Gun Show at the Dulles Expo Center - google it - pretty decent show.

Hit the Smithsonian by Dulles Airport - if you are into aircraft guns...or really what they are about - Space Shuttles, SR71, Enola Gay, and pretty much all other genre's of aircraft.

NRA range: Also a great facility. Better lit than ESS.

Hey y'all. Need some info. I'm relocating to NoVA for work so I need a reasonable commute to the capital.

At the moment we've narrowed housing down to a few townhouse type places in Arlington and a couple developments near Kingstowne Center in Alexandria, which is in Fairfax county IIRC.

That being said what's the current state of NFA friendliness for those locales? I know overall Virginia is 2A awesome but I've read conflicting stuff online regarding CLEO sign offs in both places but maybe that's a moot point with 41p only requiring notification only now? I'm itching to get into the NFA game.

Any recommendations as far has housing goes or atleast places to avoid? I'd like to keep the commute to around 30 mins.

My daughter and her husband have a shop in the Pentagon Mall and she is on the verge of making me a grandfather. So my new footprint for the USA is Falls Church.

Next trip back to the USA, I want to look for a place in the country but still close to Falls Church.

As part of a family with southern heritage, I love the history.

NRA museum was fun to go to, but it didn't blow my socks off like the military museum in Istanbul did.

The subsection on here or another forum altogether? I assume the latter lol.

We looked at falls Church and Fairfax specifically and we really liked the area but from what people said the commute can be rough?

My commute consist of getting to Reagan at 0500 for a 0700 flight. Then 6 hours later 75 minute drive to the Plantation. But I only do it once ever 4 weeks or so then stay in VA for 10 days to 3 weeks.

I have a question what is with the NOVA name. If I remember Lee commanded the army of Norther Virgina, so it must be an old title.

To me though at first it sounded like a bunch of northern transplants wanting to separate themselves from the south.

Actually, it is a bunch of Virginians trying to separate themselves from northern transplants.

Well I fit that was born and raised in Seattle, but the family traces back to the south and was very well off prior to the war and the carpetbagers that came after the war.

I did live in southern Israel:o

Quick update. We settled on a place in Kingstowne. I liked a couple of places in Arlington near Shirlington but holy hell, after first month's rent plus security deposit (1 month rent), and then 750$ pet deposit it was over 5k up front before even moving in. The commute would have been great but oh well such is life. Thanks to those who offered insight though. Move in is in a few weeks yet.

Seems like a nice area based off the few times I've been there, congrats. Enjoy VA.

I know I'm a day late and a dollar short, but here's my $.02:

Commute time directly correlates with rent. Even if you lived in Arlington, depending on where you work, it would still be a 40 minute drive.

When We lived in DC, I would usually walk and take take the bus; even when I did drive it would take 15-20 minutes to get the 3 miles from my apt to my job.

Unless you have to drive, you might want to look into metro (train or bus). Unless your job is paying for parking, you're looking at $250 a month in parking. I work in the golden triangle, and the cheapest garage I found is $11 per day before 10am. It's much worse if you're closer to the mall.

Currently, we live in Woodbridge. Yeah, it's further out, but costs are a lot lower and I'm within 30 minutes of 3 great gun stores. With HOV lanes, it takes us about 45 minutes to get into the city.

If you had specific questions, feel free to PM

Hello all, new to NoVA but not new to the forum. Moved from Ohio (WPAFB) to the area, Lorton to be specific and working at the 5-sided puzzle palace. Always lurking on the forums, reading and trying to absorb as much as I can. I do have a question, can anyone recommend any good gunsmiths in the area? I have some projects that I'd like to get worked on but not sure where to head. Thanks in advance.

I think Northern Virginia Gun works gets high marks. I haven't used them but I remember their name coming up on the forum. Not far from you either.

Jim Carollo at Specdive tactical in Alexandria is excellent. I really have not run into a request that he has not done before. He can build you anything you want. Does excellent AK work. He works on and builds custom 1911s. Will do RMR cut out on Glocks along with polymer stippling. He does barrel cut downs, threads and pin and welds. He has a full cerakote paint shop and oven along with a mill and lathe. He a has a ton of 3 letter agency work in the area and sees everything.

He has built me a custom AK with side folder, and a few custom SBRs. He has custom built me a magpul AK handguard to fit my M85 Pap along with a custom Ultimak. Threads all my barrels for muzzle brakes and cans. He also does full custom barrels from blanks and will do custom gas ports for you. He just finished a new magwell for my TRP (needs cerakote):

War Rifles is in Manassas but I just used them and had good results. They specialize in precision rifles but did well with my AR.

Seconded for WAR Rifles. Very clean muzzle device pinning, for example; Cerakote, threading, all sorts of stuff. Drew's good people.

If I am looking to pick up a bolt action rifle where should I look (besides Gander Mountain, Dicks, Bass Pro)? Which shops have a decent selection?

I stopped by earlier today and spoke with Jerry for a bit. Truly a professional operation and a tremendous wealth of knowledge. Great folks. I'll definitely be going through them and silencershop for my suppressors and the fact that they will assist with Form 1s is an added bonus. Honestly, I can't say enough good things. The training opportunities?? Awesome....

I would add Green Top down by Richmond to your list.
