I just got to use my new AR-Rest which I received a few weeks ago for T&E, so I figured that I would post a few pics here so that anyone that is not familiar with it could check it out. It is basically a lightweight shooting rest that breaks down to three pieces that easily fits in your range or gun bag. It is made specifically for the AR-15 because of the long 30 round magazines, but it could be used for any firearm I guess. The company that makes it (www.Montie.com) also makes a shorter one called the X-Rest. It is very lightweight and is much more convenient to take to the range than the more traditional shooting rests that are generally heavier and bulkier. It comes with rubber type padding where the firearm sits to protect it from scratching or marking it. It also comes with rubber feet for the legs for a better grip with smooth surfaces. This is the only part of the product that I was disappointed with, because the rubber feet do not fit very tight and kept coming off or moving. I just stopped using the feet because of this. It did move a little while shooting, but this did not bother me very much. It is very strong and provided a very stable platform for sighting in my Bushmaster with its new Aimpoint CompM4s. Setup and take-down is very fast due to the very limited amount of parts. Overall, I am very please with it especially because of its ease of portability, simplicity and low price. Nice video. I was suprised to see the tripod jump back over an inch for every shot.
Another thread on the montie.com X-rests (https://www.m4carbine.net/showthread.php?p=631017) Seems kind of expensive then add $12 shipping.
I am glad my local range provides sandbags and spotting scopes for the occasional need to sit at a bench and sight in a rifle.

I received one as well (the skeleton version). I need to write it up.

Short version:
I like it for use in the prone on a soft surface - such as dirt. It's quite stable. Off a concrete bench or wooden table, it's not as stable, and as mentioned, the rubber baby buggy bumpers fall off easily. I don't see it as a vise or a rifle rest, I see it as a lightweight tripod that doesn't have to be attached to the rifle. I think its best use would be in the field on a hunting trip. It goes a long way toward keeping the weapon stable, but gives you almost unrestricted (that is, resistance-free, which can be a good thing or a bad thing) weapon movement.

I would like to keep it, because I can definitely see where it would come in handy, but I will ask Montie if he wants it back, because I've had it for over a month now.

If it makes a difference in your price evaluation:

- the shooting rests are American made (current shipping units only have two non-domestic parts, later this summer the rests will be 100% domestic)

- the aluminum parts are water jet cut from 5052 aluminum by a veteran-owned company

- all hardware is stainless steel

- the soft points (bumpers that protect the stock) are made from EPDM (i.e. synthetic) that will withstand approx. 300-350 degrees before melting (just in case a hot gun barrel is laid on the bumper)

- the rubber feet are included as a convenience for times when you want to use the rest on a surface that you want to protect (such as a car hood).

Here is the video about our shooting rest design philosophy:

The motion after a shot is a trade off for the light weight and portability. However, the shooter may only notice the motion when you have to occasionally move the rest back to a position that gives you a natural point of aim on your target. There are additional reviews at:

Thanks for the feedback. Let me know if you have any more questions, comments or suggestions.

Cheers,
