If you haven't caught it on PBS there is a series called "Ground War" which makes "Tales of the Gun" look like a detective novel.

They did their research, trace the history as well as present the equipment/techniques in a less sensational way and still manage to be entertaining.

Good stuff.

D-Day - The Price of Freedom was also pretty good.

Honestly, I think PBS was pretty good even when I was a kid watching with my Dad.
