Looks good. You have plans for it or are you leaving it stock?

Thanks, I just picked it up today.

I'm not going to do anything to it that I can't undo....

I'll replace the collett bushing with a standard one, 18lbs recoil spring, maybe one of the Wilson drop in beavertails and a Commander style hammer to work with that, but no cutting or shaping.

Looks like my old Colt I had. I put a Bar Sto barrel and bushing in mine.

I can't bring myself to tie up the $$$ in a .38 Super but if I ever find a nice nickel or polished SS in .45 acp I'm all over it.

Nice pistol T.

Nice pickup.

Check out EGW's barrel bushings. I understand that they will make you a custom bushing if you send them your dimensions.

This is not helping my recent and unexplainable urge to buy a Colt Series 70. Which my local fun shop happens to have in stock for a good price.

Thanks again guys.

HK45, this was an impulse buy for me.....don't fight it, it only makes you loose sleep while you justify to yourself that you need that Series 70.

As far as the bushing goes, I'll probably just pick up a Colt one from Brownells.

Stripped it, it was damn clean on the inside, near new, very little wear. It came with a beat up box and the manual. I've got a feeling it sat in someone's night stand for 30 years or so.

Oh, and JHC....not nickel plated but it's a Colt Commercial Gov't Model from 1947 in .38 Super.....prewar parts assembled post war.....

For the longest time I never liked nickel on a 1911 but my tastes have changed recently. Not to mention it holds up way better if carrying. I especially love the contrast with the black thumb safety, slide stop, bushing, grip safety, grips, etc. Awesome sidearm and congrats!

Ok, THAT .38 Super would be worth the investment.

I'm not a 1911 guy, but I'm still inclined to say, "niiiice."

Ok, so I've been meaning to ask, but didn't want to start a thread on it.

That scene, when he jumps in the river and the dog follows him, as soon as he gets on dry land he takes out his 1911, drops the mag unchambers it, and then blows into the barrel through the ejection port.

I assume that he was trying to get any water out of the barrel, but my question is, where did that technique come from?

Anyway, thanks guys and nice pistola! :D

It's a Hollywood technique. I've seen that movie 4 or 5 times and groan every time i see that.

I think I'm going to have to go out tomorrow and pick one up. My local Wally World has .45 in stock too. I expect to do minimal work to it assuming it shoots reliably. Change the beavertail, 10-8 performance National Match rear sight, mid-length thumb safety. just a blast to the past type pistol. I'm Glockified for everything else. I read up on that nickle finish on yours. Pretty impressive.

And definitely agree with HK45, it's Hollywood, not a training film.

Man that is a nice pistol! The Super .38 is also a beauty. Is it from that large batch of Commercial Govt. models that turned up a couple of years ago?

Is the recoil spring you put in the Model 70 heavier or lighter than stock? Thanks.

Nice find. May we ask how much it set you back?

Every time I think of selling my 1911 I see one of these threads and I change my mind.

Here is the Grandaddy to your Super .38, serial number 1. I've always wanted one like yours, but so far only have .45 calibers.

Dave, standard recoil spring weight on a .45 ACP Gov't Model is 16 lbs.

The 18 lbs. spring reduces wear and tear if you're shooting lots of full power service loads, and gives it a little more umph to get the slide closed when shooting hollow points.

As far as the old Commercial Super .38, I picked that up from a local shop. It had been sitting there for weeks, no one wanted it because of the caliber. Whoever had it had obviously carried it and depended on it. It's a great shooter, even with the original barrel.

Given the rate at which typical 1911 owners invariably yield to the temptation to modify and "upgrade" their pistols, it is a rare and special thing to find a bone stock Series 70 in that condition. Yours is a great find!

The other thing I find interesting -- in a very good way -- is the caliber. Most serious 1911 aficianados already own several .45 ACP variants, and may not have any real purpose for another, save for adding it to the collection for personal pleasure and investment potential.

On the other hand, an original .38 Super would make an ideal platform for conversion to 9x23, if you had any inclination to explore add a new cartridge and a new capability to your arsenal. In your place, that is probably the direction in which I would ultimately find myself moving ... but either way, you did well.

Dang it, Templar! Now I gotta get my blued one (purchased while home on leave in '79) outta the safe and pack it the next couple weeks while I'm off duty. Hate that I changed it even slightly from its factory configuration. May have to put it back much as I can. Haven't even shot the ol' girl in nearly two years.
