View Full Version : The guns go in the safe, but where do the mags and ammo go?

So I finally got around to buying a safe and now all my guns are safely nestled therein. I was curious about what all of you out there in internet-land have figured out for storage of ammo and magazines. I'd rather not keep more than a magazine or two of ammo in the safe with the guns, and I don't have room to keep ALL my magazines in there.

So, what are your storage solutions for ammunition and magazines?

I have some of my mags in the safe. The rest, and all of my ammo are locked in a cabinet I made out of a steel framed heavy duty shelving unit. I bolted 3/4 inch plywood onto the outside and made cabinewt doors for the front. Not the most impervious, but most people wouldn't know whats in it.

I know people that use heavy duty steel cabinets (not the ones you find in an office) to secure their ammo. others have a closet with a heavy duty fire door that their ammo is locked in.

I honestly worry more about the gun that shoots the ammo then I do the ammo. If the gun is secure, and the ammo is "safe" or in the best possible storage location (ammo boxes ext) why worry about just the ammo? I don't picture someone holding a .223 round to my head and attempting to keep me hostage with just that alone.

I got a metal storage cabinet out of a work van for free so I use that. Has cabinet space and a bunch of drawers, and it can be locked with pad locks. Now it could be easily broken into if someone really wanted to, but it is more secure and heavier duty than a filing cabinet.

I have been using a large rolling tool chest bottom part that has nice deep drawers
seems to work good and has a lock

I have a couple of the stack on gun storage lockers that I left stripped inside; each locker will hold 10-15 cases of ammo depending on how it's packaged. Sometimes you can find them on sale or clearance at Sam's Club or other stores for $75 or less.

Floor safe, steel lined with keypad for all 5.56, pistol/shotgun ammo, .308 and .375 H&H with rifles in safe. My .223 I keep under my pillow hoping the ammo fairy will turn it into 5.56 77gr Sierra OTM's.

Nothing fancy here. Mags go in rubbermaid or similar boxes/tubs. Ammo stays in the cases or cans and they get stacked in the corner.

ditto on the rubbermaid totes... thats where most of my ammo and loaded mags go. i have a new "range box" rubbermaid armored case thing that actually gets most of my loaded mags sorted into ammo cans, so i can just grab the whole case and be ready for the range.

a lot of guys use "gun lockers" for ammo storage... they're the big heavy-gage sheet-metal contraptions you see at walmart/bi-mart/etc.. and you can usually get a pretty good sized one for about $100.

Don't put too much ammo in a real safe. A few mags or a small stack of boxes is probably OK. Case lots etc I would not do it. In a fire, it will eventually get hot enough inside that the ammo could start to burn and expanding gas in an enclosed area is called a bomb.

Same here, rubbermaid for the magazines, .50 ammo cans for the ammunition.

SteyrAUG,

That is an awesome set up! with an ammo accessory section like that I can only imagine what your safe setup looks like. You're a lucky guy!

What you are looking at is actually only about $75 worth of materials. And an incredible simple design.

Basically the main support 2x4s are just ladders with rungs where you want shelves.

The bottom (long shelves) and the very top long shelf connect the support ladders into a single unit.

Just make sure you map it out on paper before you build it.

Mags go most anywhere I can find a place for them.

Ammo goes in padlocked toolboxes. It definetely won't stop a thief, but should deter anyone from messing with it (think kids).

I can't afford to stock much ammo anyway.

I dunno. I am seeing a lot of graphic novels on there. Seems to be a Marvel fan from the looks of it.

Someone just sold one of those on the show pawn stars for like $1400, and it was in rough shape.

The AR is cased behind the dresser, the G26 is in the bedside table, 1 mag in it, another on standby. All the AR mags are in the range bag in the closet.

I have 2 of those security cabinets that Wally world sells. Took some plywood and cut some blocks and shelves. just glue the blocks to the sides and drop in a shelf.
