The BCM 14.5 Mid Length uppers come with a Govt Profile barrel. How do these differ in weight and balance to the M4?

The M4 barrel is a government profile barrel. It just has the additional cut-out forward of the front sight base to accommodate the M203.

The original "government profile" barrel.

So weight wise they are going to be real close?

I do not understand why companies try to sell barrels with the M203 cut to civilians. It seems to increase the risk of inaccuracy (residual stresses, warping due to heat) without providing any benefit.

Once upon a time, I wanted an M4 profile barrel because they were uncommon and they were covered by the Rule of Cool. Now, I'd rather have something like Noveske's Afghan barrel because they aren't as common and are covered by the Rule of Cool :)

Its just marketing appeal, and for a while the only 14.5" carbines with good barrels were coming in M4 profile. Even BCM's only 14.5" carbine length guns are still M4, and they only recently introduced the 14.5" middy.

Noveske is only one of a couple who are making hammer forged 14.5" carbine guns.

Are there any companies (Besides Noveske, and LWRCi) who's barrels are the same width through the whole thing? (Not government profile, or M203 cuts, etc.)

They're heavier for sure, but I like them a lot more. Especially in SBRs.

This is off topic, you'll get more visibility if you start your own post on the subject.

Incorrect. The Noveske N4 light barrels weigh the same as an M4 government profile barrel of the same length.

I believe the ArmaLite Middie barrel is almost exactly the same diameter from the center of the barrel behind
the FSB, all the way out to the front end. This is how my Middie was configured, and I believe it is still the
same way today. I really like this config. and I also liked the Denny's Operator barrel before it was
apparently dropped.

Thank you for correcting me Molon.

I assume this comparison is to Colt's M4 barrel right?

Just as an aside, the Centurion CHF CL 16" lightweight barrel made of M249 barrel steel weighs 0.9 ounce more than the Govt Profile / Noveske Profile barrel.

I guess you can always make that cut-out useful by puting a 37mm flare launcher under it. Now you'll be the cool kid on the block as you yell out "say helloh to ma little frend!":D

I've got a complete lower ready for an upper. It will be a complete BCM 14.5" middy with the lite-weight barrel and pinned FS. Looking for maximum in SHORT and LIGHT on this next gun.

All the contract barrel makers are churning out M4 bbls so it makes sense that they get bought up and used to assemble civvy guns. Change one little feature and it reduces profits, so they buy that which is mass produced. Plus so many buyers going with th cool factor, as already mentioned.
