The 551 above is nice looking. It would be great if it didn't have proprietary, expensive, rock-in mags. The paint job is nice though. If only you could get that operating system but with a lower that takes AR mags. Oh wait, you can...

Tritium night sight.

Tritium night sight.

So when that's up, does POI shift to the tritium dot and that's why you'd want to have it down in daylight?

Up = tritium
Down = regular sight post

I gathered, but I also noticed the tritium dot was significantly higher. So what I was asking was:

with the tritium sight down (regular sight post), you sight normally, with the POI just above the sights, but with the tritium sight up, do you put the tritium dot OVER the target (intended POI)?

That's the only way it makes sense to me to have it be so much taller.

This picture should help explain. This is from the 551 manual:

There are tritium vials in the rear sight that line up with the flip-up front tritium sight.

So given the finish mismatch, it's probably not original to the gun?

Had a "duh" moment on the 551, didn't look at the length of the handguards closely enough. Is that a CCF parts build?

That one is an extra housing I had for the 41 so not matched. No, the 551 started life as an LE 551 with the barrel extention to make it title one. I sourced an original 551 LB from JoshNC and had Estes Adams install it. I remember Larry's parts kits and wish I had bought one (or 5) back in the day.

Maybe it's just me, but the Swiss SIG 55x is just the most aesthetically pleasing rifle on the planet IMO. Functionally it does nothing better than a top tier AR, but man the SIGs just call to me.

Thanks for clearing that up. I thought we had another "exception to the rule" HK rifle to talk about. A little bit insane that you have a spare GSAD trigger group, I'm now trying to strain my brain to figure out when GSAD imported any rifles with a black finish.

Thanks for clearing up the 551 mystery. There are a few LE 551s imported with 16" barrels that aren't in the LB profile (grenade ring) and I'm really wishing I grabbed one because they were there and then they weren't and we shall never see them again.

And we all wish we bought Larry's SIG and AUG parts kits, but it was during the Clinton ban and that whole "replacement receiver ONLY" crap scarred off most buyers.

Being a "holy grail" rifle doesn't hurt either. I definitely have a thing for rare Euro exotics. I think the main attraction is it was the last of the "old school" rifles to be developed. After the Stg90 it seems everything was made of plastic with few exceptions.

I have one of the LE trade in 551-2 with 16" oal barrel. Mine is gray and is interesting in that it has no import markings or country of origin markings. It is marked "SG 551-2 SP" and the serial number on the left side and then has LE/gov restricted markings on the right side. I believe my rifle was one of a group that were drop shipped directly from Switzerland to the LE agency, this no import markings. I swapped out the black furniture for early green from a CCF 551-1 LB kit.

I agree with you that the SIG 551 rifles are the best looking modern assault rifles ever made. Period.

FNC is a great MG. Mine has become a favorite. As a semiauto, I probably wouldn't own one. But with 3RB and auto it is great.

I've had the 16" 551 since around 2010; purchased from Roger at Midwest Distributors. It was one of the first groups of 16" 551s he received in trade. It's pristine. Barely any signs of use. Doesn't even appear to have been handled much.

That's a nice looking set up. For me however, I don't trust the US made SIG rifles- at all. The ones I had were junk and both were sent back multiple times to the factory to get them to run correctly. I promptly sold them off after they finally replaced them with new ones. If it's going to be a SIG, it has to be Swiss- not some cheap US clone.

I think the US made guns can be brought up to par by welding on an optic rail or rear diopter, refinishing, and using Swiss furniture. The Classic and xi lower which use AR mags are a nice option for the US guns - with Swiss upper you can only use pmags (tight fit) or 20 round USGI mags. A Swiss lower really improves them. But then at what cost - one is pushing close to or more than the cost of a 553 with all these mods. I have three such Swissified US rifles and they are very nice once complete.

The original aluminum lower is getting this done, which will allow me to use the original bolt group:

46910

M&M import 553 pistol registered as SBR. Aimpoint T1 in Spuhr mount. US made one piece Rotex style flash hider. SPG Tech m4 stock adapter, BCM single point receiver endplate sling mount, BCM stock, Magpul MOE-K2 adapted to the SIG lower, SwissArms railed fore-end. I need to add a low profile QD sling mount to the back left 9 o'clock rail. This thing is a bad ass little SBR.

I just wanted another US part. Cheek weld is great on the factory folding and the factory folding/collapsing stocks. I personally prefer the factory Swiss folding/collapsing stock. But the m4 adapter and bcm stock is quite nice, allows for a QD receiver endplate sling mount, and gives me a US part for 922(r) compliance.

Ahh, fair point. I picked up a Swiss adjustable/folding stock as well and also have a spare 556 lower for AR mags. Need to get my flash hider off now that my stamp came back on my can (also swapped gas plugs to the 4-position version).

I actually just swapped out a SiCo ASR flash hider for the Rotex type flash hider. Most QD suppressor mount flash hiders do not allow removal of the gas tube. The gas valve and piston can be removed, but not the gas tube. And I have other rifles to shoot suppressed. So I decided the 552 and 553 will not get a can until the Rotex V is released in the US.

Yep. I looked long and came to the conclusion that i need a direct-thread so I want with an inexpensive option (SIG SRD556). Rocksett will be my new friend.

I've got two B&T cans pending so hopeful for some interesting options to come. I heard something about a pending deal to make HK's cans here like overseas so that bodes well.

interesting , i had never heard of the SPG. i went with the ddles over the swiss arms adapter when i did my clone because of the higher buffer tube height.

will definitely need some pics when you get the upper and lower together

i haven't done much with my 556 except shoot it the last couple of years , i did pick up one of the 4 position gas plugs for it which seems to help some when shooting suppressed.

I love that photo of your rifle. It is perfectly set up IMO.

SPG Tech was the R&D skunkworks of Gemtech. Their m4 adapter was made at the request of some unit that was using the 552.

It does. I find the aimpoint low T1 mount to be too low. The Spuhr mount is slightly taller, 1.18" height. It allows something between lower 1/3 and absolute cowitness of the flip up irons.

The pre-89 551s had 16” oal barrels. The 551 LB with its 17.8” oal barrel that has the grenade launching boss (hump) was not imported pre-89. The majority of these were imported by CCF in Richmond, VA as brand new kits along with their receivers which were imported when atf was still allowing receivers of non-sporting firearms for “repair/replacement “ purposes. All were -1 (1:10 twist barrel). There were probably a handful imported a complete rifles for LE/Gov. One of our FFL/SOT members I believe has one; I will let him chime in if he wants.

Quick Pic with its new brace, no front sight, light or can at the moment. Probably the best pistol brace currently out there. One thing to know if you are using this brace with the Sig folding stock rifles is, this brace will not lay flat against the side of the weapon when folded unless you have the brace extended all the way out. This is due to the shape of the brace profile where you put your cheek, as it has a shelf to it.

I have one of Larry's complete 551 LB kit and receiver. It is just sitting around in parts and nothing has changed since I purchased it from CCF - along with the AUG. All 100% brand new and disassembled.
i included a photo a few months ago. Gotta get off my can and get it done. I even have Buckner's side plates for it. The 55X series is quite addictive and JDI does not help end the quest for MOAR :D.

I SBR'd my 553 and it is wonderful. I suppose you could make the 551 into a title one rifle with one of Michael's Machines extenstions and the 922(r) parts. They are wonderful rifles, cant go wrong. I would stock up on the 20 rd mags while they are fairly cheap.

For what it is, and what it does, I like it a lot. I've always had a pretty good astigmatism, so regular red dot sights have been a love/hate relationship for me. I messed with a first generation Trijicon reflex when they were brand new. The dual illuminated reflex sights are a nice crips reticle for me, versus the "starburst" or "comma" I see with an Aimpoint, so I like the concept. The dim reticles and wash out were kind of a buzzkill.

The M21 shows far less washout than the RX06, but it seems much bigger, and heavier. The M21 is STOUT. I picked up that battery powered illuminator/wash out remover and it does indeed get rid of the washout, but if it's on, it bleeds a bunch of light out of the collector. I did just order one of the polarizing filters from MAKO, so I'll see how that works out.

https://i.imgur.com/izR5b7B.jpg

https://i.imgur.com/JOuaj0R.jpg

I've pretty much switched to 1x4 variable optics on all of my rifles, as my eyes aren't getting any better, but it seems any magnification on the Rattler is overkill.

For what the Rattler is, I'm thinking even the M21 is overkill, so I may look into one of the dual illuminated RMR's, on something like this.

Does this count as a SIG Rifle? I bought it two days ago. The original owner bought it in the 60s from SARCO and put it in his closet till I bought. I also picked up a NIB Valmet-S in 7.62x39 and a NIB Mini 14 in 223 with a collapsible/folding Stock.

Had a Sig M400 years ago and wish I never sold it. The fit and finish was amazing and they had built in push button swivel mounts and a tensioner built into the lower for a solid feel.
