Very first post here...New guy here with a question? (sorry if this has been asked a million times)

I was told if anybody can answer this question, the minds at M4carbine.net would have the answer. They said AR15.com has a little too many brand fanboys?

So, on paper, according to the specs... who makes the very best AR15 "carbine/Stoner design" money can buy? I am guessing on paper there might be 2 or more with the same specs?

Oh boy!

First, define which paper we should be following. TDP?

Second, what is the purpose of these guns? Home Defense? Training? Varming shooting?

Third, budget range?

For a carbine Colt is the gold standard.

Several commercial brands stack up as well. BCM, and Daniel Defense make comparable guns as well.

I rely on BCM the most as they make the more combinations than anyone, adhere to mil-spec as close as possible, and offer competitive prices. They are also a stand up company.

There are quite a few brands you cannot go wrong with. All depends on your uses, preferences, budget, etc.

What do you define as 'best'?

The only documentation I've seen of what brands have what features is the mil-spec chart by rob s. That being said, mil spec doesn't always mean 'best'.

The specs needed for a long range varmint gun will most likely not be the same as for a medium range fightin' gun.

Well, there is no "best" M16/AR-15/M-4 style rifle in any quantifiable terms. There are many rifles that are great tools, and better than most; knowing what specific application for the tool will help you understand your requirements and get a better answer here. EG: are you intending to use it at the range casually and that is it? Do you intend to use it as a carry weapon for LE or Military use? Do you want a SHTF rifle for zombies? There are a lot of parameters/variables to be considered; inlcuding the biggie: how much of a budget do you have, and how patient are you to find a top tier tool to fit into that budget...

That being said:
You cannot go wrong with Noveske, LMT, Daniel Defense, BCM, or Colt; they are all top tier rifles that are good to go. My personal favorite is the Daniel Defense M4, seeing as I have more time with that rifle than any of the others; and it is the one I own; I love it.

Check out the comparison chart Rob_S made, you'll have plenty to ruminate over once you dig into that sucker.

Ah I see. So the consensus is... there is no "one" top tier AR. There is basically a handfull of top tier AR's and from there its personal preference.

As far as intended use... A fighting rifle. close to mid range engagements.

...from there its personal preference.

Every aspect of "best" is subjective. You need to set all criteria, and judge each one against it.

For me?? I chose a COLT 6920/6933 and COLT 6920 w/ Noveske SS upper and they work exceptionally well for my needs.

After you read all of those, you should be on your way to making a decision; or have a slew of more specific questions to ask, thus getting you more specific answers...
And yes, personal preference is huge in finding the proper rifle for you. But that isn't the only thing; making sure you buy the correct rifle/tool to fit your needs is equally as important.
Would you buy a Porsche 911 turbo S to haul tools to a construction site? Probably not, that porsche is titties; don't get me wrong, but there are other tools for the job that fit the application very specifically/better.
Rifles are no different. I strongly suggest you do a copious amount of research before making the leap; you'll pat yourself on the back later!
