Well as most of us know any self respecting individual armed with a pistol should be carrying a 1911 .45 ;)
(Yes Jeff I still have my G19)

With some help and advice from some of the mods here I star

Starting point (well half stripped)ted work last month...

By the numbers a 1943 Ithaca USGI 1911 - with a Colt slide -- looks by the letters and numbers to be an arsenal rebuild (from what the 1911 info forums tell me)

I like my 1911's high cut under the trigger guard - so one night in the TOC -- out came Mr File

okay not quite straight :( -- but what do you want from a dremel freehand -- I recut them and re-threaded with the Rail in place with the one good screw later

Coated in Alumahyde (CB -- told you it was going to be different -- well for a 1911 in Iraq)

Yeah I forgot the grip screws - and I used the old trigger (so I lose in the CDI)

I debating keeping the old trigger - but the grip screws are coming ( I wanted hex head ones..)

*the 1911 w/ Dawson rail and X200 does not fit well in the 1911/wX200 6004 -- working on it...

Very nice work! Looks great.

I hope you find plenty of ammo to feed it. A pistol like that shouldn't have to go hungry.

Still have not shot it :( DSS won't let me shoot .45 at the REO (apparently the awesomeness of a 230gr round woud cause the earths crust to crack or something  ) It cycles JHP at least by hand. I'm still running my G19 and will be for some time until I can get a few hundred out of this bad boy -- and gradually dremel the 6004 and Blade-Tech IWB to fit the hair of drop lower than an integral frame rail that the Dawson rail has -- used to be most 6004's fit the dawson too...

So next time we are the SF camp we shall see.

Some very nice people got me some 230gr JHP ammo -- but USGI 203gr ball is the norm.

1911's grow on trees here don't you know ;)

5th SFG pretty had all their ODA's kitted out with 1911's around here (I think they swung the ammo via the .45 UMP's that they let collect dust - but where good for justifiying a metric shitload of .45) There was a civie armorer over here with the B team - and he was rebuilding 1911's either from US stocks - or acquired locally...
When 1st swung in I was out of town - and did not get a good foot in the door to pick up food scraps they did not want on the RIP.

Now I just had to put together my 13" DSA OSW FAL...

Kevin,

I saw a few Remington Rand 1911A1's while in your AO and always wished for one. Unfortunately that was an immediate termination issue with the herd I worked for. I did whore myself out to Brownell's for lots of parts, accessories and supplies during the two years there and fixed up a couple of those pieces for deserving LAs, etc.

This thread brings back some great memories! Hope it runs good and it should with FMJ anyway.

Take care, bro!

Wayne, yeah we are lucky in that respect that while we are issued G19's and/or G17's we have the option of other handguns in 9mm or .45ACP as long as you qualify.

And Kevin,

I forgot to say that if I was a Hadji terrorist asshole, I'd be proud to be killed with that pistol!

I'm impressed. But then again, if those mofo's who wipe their asses with their hands can build an AK from scratch in the mountains, YOU ought to be able to rebuild a 1911, right? :p

ETA: Don't take the Dawson horseshoe back off of the X200 after firing it. It will be getting a hairline crack at that front adjustment screw during the first few hundred rounds and when you try and take it off it will split in half due to the spring pressure. I split one when replacing the pressure pad with the factory backplate.

Dawson is sending me a replacement though...

KevinB,

Did anything prompt you to build and want to carry a 1911?

Also, if you could get ahold of a 230 gr JHP, what about 9mm?

Lastly, I didnt know you could use JHP in combat? :D

Take care.

KevinB
06-06-07, 14:51
Well on the 1911 -- I like single action, cocked and locked guns for this sort of stuff. Really the muscle memory is like a M4 -- safety off - safety on. I had some time on my hands and figured that I had (maybe) the ability to do a .45, and a .45 - so why not.

Dan -- hmm I have some Cz-75's around here somewhere :D

I have 147gr JHP in 9mm -- I'm not in the Army anymore, and depending what you are doing you or your target may or may not fall into the Hague Convention. Most of the bad gusy here fall into illegal combatants and are not legally required to be afforded Hague or Geneva Convention Protections (though we treat them once they are PUC's as if they are in the majority of respects)
People doing PSD for the Army are NOT allowed JHP and must follow military ammo contraints -- however people on DOS contracts providing protection for Embassy folk and other related entities are not combatants - and as a result attacks on folks like us are considered Terrorist attacks -- and the JAG has repeatedly ruled that Military and others dealing with terrorists can use JHP ammunition.
In some areas the Military Police take a dim view of that and make an issue -- however its not their jurisdiction (and even of they take it you can get more issued :D )

and my Strider came in the mail today

Kevin,

I'm really interested in how that tan finish holds up (how the holster wears on it, moving part areas, and shooting/cleaning it).

Hollow point are actually pretty common in country, so much so when you process out the ammo techs have separate turn in boxes for hollow points. I was actually issued them because of a lack of ball rounds for 9mm at one point. As to the legality of using them, I think most people kind of turn a blind eye to their usage or carry.

FOr some reason, my superfast gov computer couldn't show images, but my wife's retarded computer can.

That is totally awesome dude.

We had two CZ-75's in the bad guy weapon box, a stock gun and an engraved, nickeled pimp gun.

Your "super fast .gov computer" probably has a .gov firewall blocking picture hosting sites like photobucket, flickr, and the like.

Well I figured I'd give up a bit of a range report (and more pics)
I'd also like to thank Robb, Ned Christiansen, and all the countless others who gave me ideas and info on the build and troubleshooting info.

It even ran the '43 .45 ammo I found here and mixed mags with '02 WCC ball -- plus 230gr JHP and 185+p JHP issued to some.

There a few guys starting to think about rebuilding their USGI 1911's now on the team -- however support is dwingling due to the rotation of the .45 lover Group nearby to a less 1911 friendly group.

Soon I will have all the tuperware replaced with real Iron guns :D

Its doing fine -- like all well built 1911's :D
runs better than my Glock19 :p

I had an issue with the mag springs on the Wilson 10rd mags -- they went south very very early...

Strider is a MFS.

I took 4 months off from Iraq - so I won't be back until Feb - but both my SR16 and 1911 are tucked safely away with BigRed (who has a 1911 so he does not need to mooch mine)
