I am mainly in an urban enviornment, but on occasion we do assist county deputies if they are far out/short handed so cornfields and wooded areas are not out of the question.

I have been running an Eotech 512 for several years with no problems, but have recently came into a good deal on a Trijicon 1.25-4x accupoint so I jumped on it. (buddy opened a gunstore and he hooked me up with a deal that would make you plain sick)

Most of the shots I would be taking would be under 100yrds, and most likely inside 25.

What is the general thought on the 1-4x scopes in CQB type situations?

I am also interested in trying 3-gun matches, so thats another reason I bought the accupoint.

That's a good scope for 3gun. Run it on a LaRue SPR-E mount and you'll have a great set-up.

My experience with the Accupoint from this thread: https://www.m4carbine.net/showthread.php?t=4209

I used the Trijicon Accupoint 1.25-4x with a red triangle (TR21R) on a duty gun for a short period of time. I shot matches and did some training with it as well as taking it on calls at work. While I didn't care for this optic on 1.25x because it slowed me down too much for my preference at CQB distances.

I really liked this scope on 1.5x - 4x.

On 1.25x the scope had too much eye relief (I'm a nose to charging handle shooter) even in a LaRue SPR-E with the LaRue mount as far forward on the flat top as possible and the scope mounted as far forward as it would go in the scope mount.

There was some distortion that I couldn't get use to on 1.25x. The best way I could describe this distortion is, it is like looking through a bubble.

I did have a problem with the reticle washing out a couple times in the dark using a white light. It didn't completely wash out, but the lit reticle was dim, thus making it harder to locate in a hurry.

If using the TR21 to shoot longer distance, the reticle under the triangle is 3 bold vertical lines that can completely cover the target, thus making "hold over" difficult to impossible.

It is a good scope and Naval EOD uses them so the optic has seen combat. The LT SPR-EER mount is a must for it though.

Anybody know how the Accupoint stacks up against a Leupold VX-III 1.5-5 illuminated duplex? Specifically speed for close shots, optic quality, and ruggedness/weatherproofness?

Both these scopes are about the same price, and I'm thinking about trying one or the other. I know the Leupold would be better for precision at distance, and I would assume the TR21r would be better for speed at close range, but how do they compare for general "user friendliness"?

In the link I posted above I also reviewed the Leupold MR/T 1.5-5x with illuminated reticle.

Roger that, Jeff. I read that, but I'm asking specifically about the "standard" VX-III illum duplex, not the MR/T with SPR reticle (which costs twice as much).

I'm leaning toward the Accupoint because of my expectation that it will be much faster at close range... BUT if the TR21 has a substantially smaller field of view, and/or the glass is not as good, and/or it's not as "tough", I might just go with the Leupold, since I'm familiar with the VX-III and know the glass is good and that it's reasonably rugged.

I'm not into 3-gun, but I've heard both of these scopes are popular with 3-gunners. I'd guess the biggest difference between these two is a trade-off between speed at close range, and precision at extended range. Am I right?

I run the Leupold Vari-X III Illuminated with the German No.4 reticle. Just the dot lights up but you can only see it in really poor light (indoors for example) not during the day outdoors. I love mine. Today or tomorrow I'll be mounting an Aimpoint H1 behind my Leupold on a YHM 45 degree mount with a 1/2 riser for my close range sight and removing the irons up front.

I just mounted the Aimpoint H1 on my 3gun rifle yesterday and will be shooting tonight after work.

Here's what I looks like. I used a YHM 45degree mount and a YHM 1/2" riser to get it far enough away from the scope. Now if Mark LaRue can make me a mount! I don't have to roll the rifle as far to get the dot on target like I did with the JP irons.

gotm4,

That's the first time I've ever seen a photo of that Leupold reticle. COOL! Have you worked out holdovers with it? Looks like it might be doable for shooting out to 400-500m.

I was leaning heavily toward a TR21R, but this Leupold reticle has me plenty interested.

I just sight it in for 50yds. I only have to hold over at 300yds. Then it's only 5-6" over, I just aim at the neck of an ipsc target and can get an A zone hit at 300yds.

Got it today and installed it. I like the scope at during the day when the fiber optics are kicking in. The tritium is a little dimmer than I thought it would be but I am used to battery powered sights. The main problem I am having is too much light on my gun, I have a 9V surefire with a turbo head and its washing out the reticle. I am going to have to get a diffusor for the light or something.

Someone recommended placing a lens cover over the front lens of the scope to black it out. Dunno, have to play with it more....

Yea, I have the TR21R on my duty rifle (AR-10). I usually don't have any problems at CQB ranges outdoors, however when I have a white light on in a room it can wash out the red triangle slightly. What I have done is exactly what you said. I use Butler Creek scope caps and close the front one, making it an occluded eye gunsight. It works very well for me and is just as fast as any other red dot optic.
