Any ideas on how a 1/9 twist will work with bullets over 55 gr? Sorry if it's a dumb question or has been asked before! Just curious as I have no info and am interested in how 77grainers work in 1/9....

You should be able to get pretty good results up to 69gr. After that , it will be a case by case type of thing.

Velocity will be a major factor-but don't be unsafe with reloads just to get the 77's to work in a 1n9. Barrel quality, including how hot it gets will also come into play.

I was once told by an old High Power shooter and builder that you "can stabilze a bullet in a sewer pipe if you drive it fast enough"

Oh so true however eventually that sewer pope may become a pipebomb if pushing them too fast.

I agree it's a case by case basis. My buddys will handle them, mine won't.

My 24-inch Bushmaster Varminter has a 1/9-twist barrel that handles 75-grain ammo very well but won't group using 77-grain rounds.

Remember that because of how the barrels are cut, 1/9" is just a guideline. Any given 1/9" barrel will actually be between 1/8 1/2" or so and 1/9" with very few (if any) being EXACTLY 1/9", for those lucky enough to wind up with ones with "extra" twist, stabilizing heavier bullets is a possibility.

All you can do to know for certain is try it and find out for yourself.

If it does work, as it wears it may be a disapointment--just get the 1n7

Thanks y'all for taking the time to answer. I really like this forum as it has really good info from really "switched on" members.
