Took Mike G's, from Austere Provisions ( http://www.austereprovisions.com ) advice, and got some Klean Kanteens. My original 40oz is too sooted up to do this with, but added these two to the lineup. The 27oz is going into my new hiking bag, and the 40oz is going on my Bug-Out Vest.

Easy, cheap, and ugly. Supposedly the black aids in heat absorption, and resin repellence. We'll see. Since 99.9% of users aren't buying these things to stick directly into a fire, I figured it can't hurt. If you boil with them enough, they're going to get a blackened "carbon enamel" coating anyway.

My next mod will probably be some sort of wire retaining device/bail for dangling the thing over the center of the fire.

Be sure, if you cook over direct flame with a bottle that you:

1) DO NOT use aluminum, since they typically have some sort of epoxy-lined walls.
2) DO NOT use insulated stainless-steel, as you run the risk of a blowout.

In short, the Klean Kanteens are the heat.

Excellent. Have been running the 40oz for several weeks now.

Cool idea, I definitely want to hear some feedback on how it holds up. Also, I found that when the unpainted ones get sooted up that you can get most if not all of it off with a brillo pad and some elbow grease.

I have some thoughts for a wire support, let me play with it a bit and see if anything comes out successful and I will post if so.

Thanks. I've been scratching my head on it for a minute. The simplest way would be to drill two holes in the "throat" area, and run the bail through it; the concern I have would be losing the seal for transporting/having some serious leak issues.

Not the best photo but this is what I came up with while playing in the shop. Just standard multistrand electrical wire using a split clove hitch and alternating the side that the hitch is on.

Positives:
-easy to do
-no permanent mod to the bottle
-wire can be used for something else if need be

Negatives:
-wire will eventually fail due to heat stress
-less secure than a true bail

Another thought I had is using a hoseclamp with some wire and wrap around the upper portion of the bottle. This would reduce the heat exposure and be removable. Not sure on durablity and I dont have a large enough clamp here to test it out.

You, Sir, are a champion.

I like that design. I believe the solutions I was envisioning were overly complicated.

Some of the ideas I was coming up with involved everything from coat hangers to hose clamps.

Your design, out of flexible steel cable/snare wire might do the trick...well. The challenge will be to ensure that it can be packed down to a small size. My new "maximumist" setup isn't forgiving on space.
