This winter all of my AR's when through a metamorphasis, as I'm constantly figuring out what works best for me.

Something that I did on all my guns is I moved the vertical foregrip further forward, I find that this helps me "drive" the gun better. Some guys advocate moving it further foward than what I have it, but I'm some what short in stature and still need to have access to the Surefire. I have the Surefire moved as far forward as it will go. I am liking the vertical foregrip in it's current location, works well for me.

Another item that I changed was, on all of my M4 carbines, I went back to 14.5" barrels. I have been from 14.5" barrels on all my M4's to 16" barrels, and now back to 14.5" barrels.

Of the guns that I'm running an Aimpoint on (5 total), some had LaRue BUIS others had Troy Ind BUIS. A couple of years ago I didn't care for a non-folding BUIS. But after using the LaRue BUIS for a couple years, I prefer it to a folding BUIS on guns that I run an Aimpoint on. This gun had a Troy BUIS on it, I traded out the Troy Ind BUIS for a LaRue as well as added the Surefire Scout Light with LaRue Tactical Mount.

The final modification to this gun is the addition of the LMT SOPMOD stock. I had tried this stock a couple years ago and it was a decent stock, but didn't feel that it was worht the price they were charging. Late last fall, I put the LMT SOPMOD stock on one of my duty guns and ran it for a while. I really warmed up to the SOPMOD. I don't know how I ever lived without a rubber buttpad. Ergonomics were perfect. Longer length was perfect. Cheek well was perfect. Footprint of the buttstock was perfect. There was literally nothing that I didn't like about the LMT SOPMOD. Of all the M4's that I had that had VLTOR's were chaged out and a LMT SOPMOD was added.

Thanks Jeff i have always liked your reviews.

Why do you like a folding over a non folding BUIS on a Aimpoint equiped gun?

Other way around, I prefer a non-folding BUIS like the LaRue for my Aimpoint guns.

Very easy to transition from the optic to the irons if the need arises. All it takes is a small rotation of the head.

USMC03,
what is the reason for mounting the lights at 3:00 or on the right rail? I am not questioning right or wrong, I'd just like to hear your logic.

Personally, Mine is at 6:00 or on the bottom rail. I use one of the WG6 lights with the pressure pad fixed to the TD VFG. The only time I had an issue with this was when I wanted to use the flat of the rail on top af an object to rest/support the gun. It made me want to move the light to the 3:00/right rail and run the pressure pad to a TD rail panel and do away with the VFG.

I am a mag well gripper and run the VFG way to the rear.

Anyway I'd like to hear your and anyone else's thoughts... If this is a Hi-jack sorry, Please move it where it needs to go.

Jack,

I don't use pressure pads as I've seen too many accidential discharges of light over the years. Thus I use the clicker tail cap.

As you can see there is not enough space on the 6 o'clock rail due to the position of my vertical foregrip.

On guns that I run a Surefire X200 or guns with longer rails, I run the light on the 9 o'clock rail, as I run my thumb forward on the 9 o'clock rail and it takes little effort to activate the light (my left hand when holding the vertical forgrip, looks very simular to my grip on a pistol with thumbs forward).

On my M4's I have been running the lights on the 3 o'clock rails for years because it's the most ergonomical position for me. I can activate the light easily and the light doesn't interfer with my grip, yet is still easy to activate.

USMC03, I was wondering, did you put together this beauty or did you have someone do it for you?

A local smith installed the rail system and perminately attached the flash hider.

The rest of the gun is factory Colt.

Glad to see there are a couple guys around that know what they're doing and dont feel the least bit bad about running a 14.5" barrel with a perminent flash hider ;)

My only motivation for installing the KNS pins is because I know it irritates you Mark :D

Hi sorry this thread seems to have been dead for awhile. Though I have a question Jeff. Why a Socom barrel rather than a plain M4 barrel? Does the SOCOM have greater durability?

No need to respond Jeff I found your logic for the Socom barrel in another thread.

Jeff, which setup and color M4 do you carry with in your Patrol Car? And Jeff thanks for the reply and using your photos.

Lawdog,

I work investigations / SWAT. My work gun is black, I carried a gun with foliage green furniture on it for a short period of time and got some looks, but no one ever said anything.

If I showed up on a call out with a tan or painted gun, I think the Capt or Deputy Chief in charge of SWAT would probably want to see me in their office after the de-brief :D
