i'm using version 2.0.0.20 and certain sites make this top portion drop down and in the top right hand corner a button says Install Missing Plugins and to the right a red x:

is there a setting so that it never asks you if you want to download plugins?

2.0? Wow there could be all sorts of issues with a browser that old not rendering pages correctly. 3.6.6 is the current release.

But back to the original question, what plugin is missing? Is it the same one all the time (like Flash or something)? If you want to make plugins not work something like NoScript should prevent them from loading and giving you the red X, but it will be a challenge finding an old version.

certain media plug-ins might not support or didn't exist for a browser that's 5 years old.

Not that I know of.

For security reasons alone, you should upgrade.

Firefox 2.0 is no longer supported and the last update, Firefox 2.0.0.20, is affected by several vulnerabilities fixed in newer versions of the program. All users are urged to upgrade to the newest version of Firefox.

List of security fixes that you don't have (there are about 17): http://www.mozilla.org/security/known-vulnerabilities/firefox30.html
