Thoughts? I am not the OP, but I have G22 PD trade-in with similar slide wear, frame on mine looks fine though.

I recently purchased a used, Detroit PD Glock 22, one of the second generation guns. Before firing the pistol I inspected it and found that it appears to have suffered an unusual failure which ultimately resulted in a cracked frame. The seller has graciously agreed to take the pistol back.

I'm no Glock expert and perhaps others have seen pistols with a similar problem, but this one is certainly new to me...

The first thing I noticed was the peening at the front of the barrel hood, bad enough that you can easily catch your fingernail on the raised edge. (Check out the concavity of the imprint on the second photo):

My guess what that the barrel was not lowering down far enough, or fast enough, to get out of the way of the slide when the gun was fired. (The action does operate smoothly by hand, however. No sign of binding anywhere).

When I took off the slide I noticed some damage to the rails, in the vicinity of the locking block (the metal insert in the frame which holds the barrel). Check out the gouge on the right side of the second image, there is actually a piece of metal missing:

My guess here is that the locking block is subjected to some serious forces when the slide rams into the barrel hood, and that it is flexing in the plastic frame, allowing the edge of the block to rise up and gouge the underside of the slide.

Here's a view of the left-hand side of the frame, looking at the slot which holds the locking block in place. You can see that the slot has been forced open:

...sadly resulting in a crack, right nearby:

It's too bad, this was a nice-looking pistol with an interesting history.

Any ideas as to what may have caused this, or how common this sort of failure is?

Never seen that before. Wonder what the Detroits PD's service ammo is?
