Suicides in Massachusetts state prisons are occurring at a rate more than four times the national average this year, prompting advocates and inmates’ relatives to call for an urgent response from state officials — and spurring the Patrick administration yesterday to hire a suicide prevention specialist.

With the discovery of an eighth inmate found hanging in his cell at Old Colony Correctional Center in Bridgewater yesterday morning, Massachusetts prisons have reached a suicide rate of about 71 per 100,000 inmates so far this year, more than quadruple the average annual national rate of 16 per 100,000 inmates reported by the US Bureau for Justice Statistics.

If I had to sit and listen to Boston accents all day I would probably kill myself too. :suicide2:

That's the least of our problems! :stop:

So you throw people in prison to punish them for their actions and they in turn kill themselves because they don't like the punishment. Instead of realizing this is simply human nature and that the inmates are doing taxpayers a favor, they want to keep them from committing suicide by giving them COUNSELING? What the freaking heck is wrong with these morons?

"Just relax, Mr. Marvin. It's only life in prison. You have so much to live for." Riiiiight, like that's going to work.

It would be interesting to see when during the year these suicides are occurring. Around MLB postseason, I'd presume.:suicide:

Kidding aside, having lived in Boston for 6 years before moving out to WI, I can see a difference in the attitudes towards cops, crime, and punishment. I recall seeing a billboard in Southie saying "Take control of your life... before we do"

That, surprisingly, wouldn't fly here.

Move the prisons towards the Berkshires, so they can at least have a nice view from their cells.
