View Full Version : Muzzle brakes? Troy, Levang, others?

I'm looking for ideas for muzzle brakes. Massachusetts has retained the ridiculous "AW ban" so whatever will be attached will be permanent and can not be a "flash suppressor" (whatever that is). The PWS FSC556 is a possibility, but a bit pricey for my needs. The Noveske stuff (like the Flaming Pig) is also pricey and has been classified by ATF Technical Branch as a flash suppressor.

I am looking for ideas for a true brake at less than $50 that will not produce obnoxious flash or side or rearward sound (i.e., "teeth rattlers"). I have next to no experience with these items, so any advice will be appreciated.

Would the Troy Medieval or the DPMS/Levang linear brakes work? Others?

Just not when I'm standing beside you. :p

If you want to eliminate large, annoying side blast, then you're going to have to go over $50, or use the Levang. Decide for yourself if results are worth the price of the Battle Comp or as a second choice, the PWS. Since you're already paying to permanently attach the muzzle device, you might as well get something that doesn't rattle teeth.

Yeah, the Battle Comp is on my short list for a personal MA-compliant rifle. This selection is not for me, but for certain folks who are interested in doing things "in a certain fiscal way." They also consider the "aggressive" YHM brakes to be high on the "cool" factor.

BTW, I'm in the Waltham area.

Right there with you. Actually, cost concerns and marketing are driving this decision, not long-term common sense. I am currently testing a PWS, but have yet to stand beside one during firing (some people complain about it).

This is not rocket surgery. Air pressure will usually go to the point of least resistance (because air can compress, unlike water, fluid mechanics can be affected by different air pressures and densities created during the gas expansion). Look for where the slots/holes are and that is probably where the expanding gases will escape.

Just by looking at it, the Levang appears to be a decent alternative to the "side blasters" that have flooded the market. I have very little experience with these items and wondered if anyone on the site had experience with the Levang and could discuss its downsides. I assume that it is a bit heavier than most of the alternatives. Most complaints seem to center on installation rather than performance.
