We were out shooting some more video for the BCM T&E upper yesterday....

You can't see this with the naked eye, but you do see cool sparkes when you shoot M855 on steel.

I have been thinking about picking up some M855. How long will a steel target last with this stuff?

That depends on the hardness of the steel, as well as the thickness, as well as the average range.

M855 is more drama than anything else. M193 is way more abusive to gongs due to its higher velocity. The penetrator just gives M855 a spectacular visual show in lower light.

M855 is strange. I've shot armor with it and got less damage than with M193. On my soft steel targets it does not seem to crater more. I've always wondered if it's a safety hazard though on some steel targets, as in, might the steel penetrator bounce back? Although I'd say in these pics it's turning into little chunks of red-hot splatter.

I've sectioned several variants of SS109, they are not all identical although most follow the same basic format. The penetrator is not super-hard.

The aluminum-cored 5.7X28 rounds are also great entertainment on steel.
