I have an MGW rear sight tool, and it came with a crappy little front sight socket. This front sight tool has always been "good enough" for installing aftermarket sights and the old pressed-in Glock factory plastic sights nearly fell out on their own.

I have a new production G19 and there's a bolt holding the front sight in. Don't know if it's not the same size as the MGW tool I have, or just too close to the slide but the tool I have isn't going to remove this thing.

Can anyone suggest a better front sight tool that will work to remove the factory bolt/screw? Prefer something with an actual handle, as the MGW piece is a little nubby thing that has always kind of sucked.

The best tool I have been able to find is the one from Alchemy Arms.

Do not get the Ed Brown front sight tool. The socket is too deep and installing the little bolt is a real pain. I think Glock has a new one out that seemed pretty nice. I looked at it at my last armorers class.

Have you used this tool? It works on the current production factory Glock front sight screw?

I have several different Glock front sights tools.

I have a Glock Inc tool, an Ed Brown on, a Wheeler one that came as part of the gunsmithing screwdriver kit, a Ameriglo one I use to just start the front sight screws and some other unknown one. Sometimes the unknown one is too wide to use and the thinner Wheeler one must be used. Glocks very a little on the amount of room around the front sight screw to the inner edge of the slide. Also sometimes one tool fits the screws better on certain front sight screws due to how thick the head of the screw is. Glock 36 front sight screws for example have to be very thin.

I haven't used that one with a Gen 4, but I've used the Aerotek Tool to install the front sight on Glock 19 Gen 3s, and a Walther P99c. It worked well the construction was top notch.

Brownells also sells a Magna-tip bit that should work for a Glock front sight. I've seen it as part of their Glock tool kit, but I've never used it myself. But I do have some of the Magna-tip bits, they are well made.

I use this tool regularly. It fits current production Glock front sights perfectly.

The Ameriglo GTool4 (4" Pro model) looks promising but I haven't used it yet. http://www.ameriglo.net/catalog/sights/sight-tools/glock/front-sight-tool

Thanks. Got confirmation from a local 'smith that this tool will work, as well as an offer to stop by and make use of it. Assuming no issues I'll pick up one of my own from Brownells.

I bought one of these from AmeriGlo and it has worked great for my sight swapping of XS, Trijicon, AmeriGlo and Warren front sights.

I had issues with all the cheapy ones that come with different sight sets.

I broke down and purchased one of the new GLOCK factory front sight tools. The handle is the same as their regular GLOCK tool but the hex driver part is magnetized so you don't drop the scew. It is expensive at like $25-30 IIRC but worth it IMO.

I know it may seem a little "gimmicky", but I use this one. It has fit every FS i've done, and the handle lets you put the right amount of torque on the FS bolt. I know some folks that have snapped the head off the bolt because the tool gave them too much torque ability.

Rob,

I use this set from Brownells's all the time" http://www.brownells.com/.aspx/pid=25473/Product/PISTOL_SCREWDRIVER_SETS_for_GLOCK_reg_

If you are interested, I can send it to you for you to try before you buy one.

Edit: Now that I look at the Aro-Tek tool, it is much better than the Brownell's tool that I have. The Brownell's tool is too deep. The Aro-Tek tool looks like it would hold the front sight nut flush with the lip of the tool. That is a much better design.

I took a bench grinder to a 3/16 nutdriver and kept turning and grinding till it fit, to hold the screw for install I slipped a small peice of paper over the head inside the socket, worked pretty well.

I purchased mine direct from GLOCK as an Armorer. Not sure if they are in the wild but I've had mine since late last year.

EDIT: I just looked on the GLOCK parts list and here's the info;
SP 05686 GLOCK Front Sight Tool (HEX) $25.00

Rob,

Did you ever locate a Glock fornt sight tool? If not would one of the Glock Armorers be willing to hook some M4 brothers up? Would we need permissioin like with a group buy? I could use one and I know a couple of others are looking as well.

I'll actually second the recommendation for the Lone Wolf tool for personal use.

+1 on the front sight "bit" being WAY too deep on the Brownells tool. I never use it anymore, as I find it too hard to use.

Of note, I contacted Brownells and discussed the difficulty using their tool because of the depth of that head, and they responded: "all tools are cut to that depth. You don't use the tool to START the screw, just to tighten it. To START the screw, put some vaseline on the end of a pencil eraser, and put the screw onto the eraser to start it into the threads. Once it's caught, use the tool to tighten."

All I could think of was that there is definitely some vaseline involved here, but not to start the sight screw in place...

OBTW, that's the LAST Brownells tool purchase I've made, or probably ever will. They used to be THE source for gunsmithing tools and know-how, not they're just a gun parts Walmart, IMHO.

ETA: this is what I'm using now. Yes, it's spendy, but it works great - http://www.lonewolfdist.com/Detail.aspx?PROD=662&CAT=111

Kevin

The front sight tool that came with the Glockmeister rear sight tool works great, too. I don't know if they sell it separate.

I agree, I found the Brown tool to be pretty much worthless.

Just a quick question so I don't have to start a new thread discussing this, are the Ameriglo (http://www.ameriglo.net/catalog/sights/sight-tools/glock/front-sight-tool) Pro model and the Aro-Tek (http://www.brownells.com/.aspx/pid=278/ttver=2/Product/ARMORER_S_TOOLS_for_GLOCK_reg_) front sight tools the same?
