View Full Version : Colt 6400C barrel rust-help!
I have a Colt 6400C (I live in NJ) that came with an atrocious and very loud compensator. I had it taken off and as a result rust seems to develop around the tip of the barrel all over the place where the compensator once lay. Evidently the parkerizing must have come off in that area. I would have taken pictures but i cleaned it again and left oil on it. Is there a way to fix this without sending out the rifle for re-parkerizing? Something that will look original?
There are several steel phosphating systems out there you might try. Duracoat sells one and you might check Midway or Brownell's too.
Does the barrel have to come off? Not what im capable of doing.
It shouldn't, it is a chemical process. Brownell's may even have an instructional video, they seem to for most everything these days.
I dont see anything in Brownells that doesnt require serious expenditure in equipment.

before you go sanding anything, is this on the crown? if so I wouldnt touch is with sand paper. Crowns need to be PERFECTLY square or it could disrupt the bullet a little on the way out of the barrel. I would find someone that can reface the crown and then touch up the park or whatever coating it has on it.
I think he means like this but worse: Have you considered DuraCoat?

That is the area affected but worse, though there is no rust in the picture. Once the compensator comes off, the area with the scratches attracts rust like a magnet. What is BBQ?

Bar-B-Q paint..... its heat restraint, comes in black and matches pretty close to at least my DPMS barrel. Besides its cheap and any hardware store will have it on there shelves.

Ya know not that I have said BBQ paint the Birchwood may not be such a bad idea it wont ad any thickness to the barrel, not that paint adds much but it does add some. If the comp is tight to the barrel the Birchwood may be a better bet.

Sounds good. Comp is staying off BTW.
Can you get it threaded and install a A2 FH instead?
I don't think his state (NJ) will allow the bbl to be threaded and a FH installed.

That is correct. However, i have been in discussions with the people at Battle Comp to thread and add a compensator, which is ok in NJ. The threads here have comvinced me that its a good compromise device under the circumstances.
