I can think of a single reason why I would buy this over an HK556, MRP, or LWRC, but apparently some people are excited about it.

The cheap red dot, and fake crap cantilever mount are less than inspiring. It probably comes with those God-awful SIG 5.56 mags too. All for a bargain of $1,799.99

Why SIG can't just un-junk the 556, I dont know.

At least it appears that they used their own bolt carrier this time.

Also, it appears that using a BAD lever or equivalent is out of the question, thanks to the extra mag fence.

I like the little Micro riser thingy. Where can I get one of those? ;)

It's extremely difficult for me to get excited about a piston AR from the company that cut every corner possible on the 5.56.

Anyone notice the rubber lens cover is backwards?
I agree that it's hard to be excited about another AR offering, especially a piston drive. Kind of like another 1911 or a new Gen. Glock.

Also, ambi mag release but no ambi safety selector? I think the BAD lever would work but the left side mag release may need to be shaved.

The only bonus I can see to the rifle is the sling points on the lower, a la KAC.

The QD End plate is a nice touch, as is the ambi-mag release on the lower (who made that for them?), MOE Furniture is pretty much standard equipment everywhere these days. The rest of the rifle they can keep.

I was somewhat excited when a $1200-1300 price was being thrown around and it was pictured with the SOPMOD stock. I'm somewhat less excited about the $1600 price tag (non-gunborker price) and MOE furniture.

I own LWRC, LMT and Knights AR's.

I have no desire to own a Sig, Ruger, Bushy, ACR etc.

If I do anything, I'll build a complete rifle with high end components.

Sig can keep that thing.

Why SIG can't just un-junk the 556, I dont know.

I do. It's because they are listening to the American consumer, and the average Red, White & Blue shooter has absolutely no idea what he is talking about when it comes to serious shooting iron.

As long as the product has a cool-sounding name, great tactisthetics (new word -- just invented it), has been seen/used in motion pictures and/or is rumored to be in service by one or more agencies who might actually have occasion to shoot somebody with it (i.e. and not go to jail), it will sell in the Land of the Free. Whether or not it is actually battle-worthy is kind of secondary for most.

I'm waiting for the SIG RealTree 556s, myself. With the matching bayonet, of course. It will be made of win.

I've found it worth the effort to un-CF the 556 Classic....

I hate to sound negative but who really cares about the SIG. IMO it is just another over priced carbine on the market. Myself, I think a Colt, DD, BCM, or LMT is a much better value for the money.

Now THAT looks like a decent rifle and possibly a battle-worthy alternative to an AR. The only thing I'd do is track down a three prong flash hider from a SIG 552.

Had a good review in a rifleman awhile back and heard they was suppose to be around 1k. I guess the price changed, I would grab one for 1k but not more.

Excellent way to put it.

556 = much better rifle in every way than this and the previous SIG-AR efforts.

Now THAT looks like a decent rifle...

The problem is SIG already has something more than decent that has been around for 30 years. SIG USA is just too inept to build it right, and is betting the American consumer is too damn stupid to know the difference

If SIG stopped bullshitting with the useless pistol variations, pimptastic finish jobs, and crappy carbines, they could actually build one decent carbine

SIG (USA) has been irrelevant in the rifle market since they got into it. They make a handgun for every minute if the day and it appears they are trying to do the same with their rifles.

Jack of all trades and master of none...

I'm not a 556 expert, but I am interested in them, what all have you done?

It's a damn shame what has happened to SIG since I bought my P228 7 years ago.

I sold the SIG I had(P-220) at a gunshow, I never shot it that much to begin with, And since I started using M&P's(FS9 Mid size.45) it just sat in the drawer, It was a good handgun, I believe it was made prior to 2004, I dont miss it...

I wonder what's up with that barrel profile that Sig is using on the new rifle. And that red dot setup looks like total crap. It seems Sig USA has taken the McDonald's Happy Meal toy approach to combat rifles.

I've had a SIG P228, P229 and a P220ST. The only ones I regret selling are the P228 and the P220ST and I've been trying reaquire them.

my dept's SRT is going these things. they are simply sold on the Sig name since they carry Sig pistols. they are dumping their Sig 552's, so you would think they would get a clue.

A good bet too!! LWRC, Olympic Arms, and Kel Tec make lots of money from idiot gun owners.

How innovative of them.... After all, there's a huge shortage of AR type rifles on the market at the moment...

Had a fellow LEO tell me last year with all the issues SIG has been having, he said SIG should stand for Seriously Inept Gun-owner. It would seem to me that they have taken a fine handgun and made it mediocre, and worse yet have now started to cater to the ignorant masses looking for "hollywood tactical" style bullshit in an AR platform.

Anyone notice the rubber lens cover is backwards?

I find bikini covers often work better backwards. They tend to leave a smudge on the rear glass if used "properly" (if the lens isn't recessed).

...Not that it was intentional in the photo.

As someone who owns a 550, 551, and 550 Sniper, it's really disheartening to hear that the 556 seems to not even be in the same league with those fine Swiss made rifles. I have a German 228 and US made 229 and NSW226. The NSW 226 shoots extremely well, but the finish is not even close to my USPs. I shoot the 226 the least and there's already finish wear near the ejection port.

The 516 doesnt look that impressive.

Here are my Swiss made 55X's.

I doubt you are going to convince these guys to give up their Swiss SIG's for an American made 556 or 516.
