Regular Carbine buffers sell for about $10.00. Why is that heavy buffers are $20+, H2 & H3 run up to $40.00. The added weight doesn't really cost that frigging much. So they are over priced because they are what's in demand, right?

Do I have this correct, or am I missing something.

Not only isn't tungsten cheap, but as long as the standard buffer is the main production item, everything else will be more expensive.

tungsten fishing weights range from $7-$10, depending on the type and weight.. compared to 0-$0.50 for lead.

steel is cheap too, so the price difference is probably pretty accurate, with a very small premium for rarity.
