Through an estate, I received a Colt AR-15 Model SP1, serial # SP52xxx. Gun mounted with a Colt 5x20 scope, no forward assist.

Lower receiver markings: right side: nothing
left side: AR-15 COLT'S PATENT FIREARMS MFG.CO.
CAL.223 HARTFORD, CONN.
MODEL SP1 U.S.A.
SER. SP52xxx

Barrel: markings: MP Chrome Bore

How do I research the date of manufactured and value? Don't believe he ever fired the weapon, many types of ammo in his house but zero .223 rounds.

Thanks

Date of manufacture was 1975.

No SP-1's had forward assists, that didn't come out until the mid 80's with the AR-15A2.

Pricing can vary a lot due to locality, for instance it will be worth more in NY because of it's preban status.

You're probably looking at around $1500.00 for just the rifle if it's in 95%-98% or so.

1964, baby!!

Built before the "one time buy" in 1965 for the USMC and Army issue in Vietnam.

By the way, the there's a serial # list on www.biggerhammer.net under AR-15 FAQ.

Love those old SP-1's and SP-1 Carbines.

dang, for sure 64 is old, that was my 3rd year in the Army and they weren't on-line yet (at least in my inf unit).

Any issues with the chrome bore?

Yup, '64 was the first full year of production, they officially started building the civilian SP-1's in '63 but I think less than 100 were built then.

Up until 1968 or so, the SP-1's didn't have a chrome lined bore.

Shouldn't have any issues that I could think of, especially if it hasn't been fired.

Sounds like you got a really nice piece.
