My father's buddy has a Dan Wesson .357 Magnum revolver with the 8" barrel. He'd like to purchase a 4" barrel to swap it out with the 8" to offer better concealment for in his RV. Does anyone know of anybody who's manufacturing after market barrels for these? It is possible to order from DW but their price is way high and he was trying to avoid the cost if at all possible.

I believe he said DW would make him one for $266 plus $43 for the tool to make the exchange.

Might want to check Numrich Gun Parts, I seem to remember them getting a bunch during one of the many Dan Wesson liquidations.

They show sold out on their website. Thanks for the heads up!

Wow prices have gone up. I paid $140 or so for my 6" barrel and shroud a few years ago. If he does some looking he can find a 4" barrel set on Gunbroker or maybe still on egay. That said a Dan Wesson is a pistol you have to want to own. With the 2" barrel mine is about the size of a 1911. If he looks around hard enough he can find alot better choices for a wheel gun. I picked up a "used" Colt Agent .38 for $300 at a local shop. It didn't even have a mark on the cylinder.

Gunbroker.com buddy. I just checked and they over 1,200 barrels for sale - some of them have to be DW.

I was looking there earlier but was looking under revolvers, whoops! Found a few under, get this, gun parts and then barrels. Thanks for the reminder!

I didn't know you can replace a barrel on a wheel gun?

They're threaded into the frame like a bolt. Good bit of torque, but any gunsmith should be able to replace and space.

Since you can't import "Saturday Night Specials" some revolvers get imported as "target" models and have the barrels replaced here. The barrels get shipped back to Brazil and it starts all over again.

Dan Wesson barrels were designed to be user interchangeable. Only takes a few minutes using a feeler gauge and special wrench. They use an unfinished barrel with a finished barrel shroud that fits over the barrel. The shroud holds the barrel in tension. Very accurate and popular in the 1980's with the silhouette crowd.

Sure you can. Any good revolversmith can change out the barrels on most revolvers. HOWEVER the claim to fame of the Dan Wesson guns was their USER REPLACEABLE barrels. The guns come with the wrench and feeler gauge to gap the cylinder.

Does that hold true with even the smith's on barrel exchange

Smith&Wesson revos? Dan Wesson is the only major (ex)manufacturer that I know of to offer easy barrel interchangability.

Other makers require a gunsmith to unscrew and install/index and set cylinder/barrel gap on the new one. Similar to bolt actions, M14's, etc..

Here is a small pictorial on swapping the barrels on a Dan Wesson. This is a Model 15 reworked by Cylinder & Slide.

And as I stated previously they are big pistols. Here it is with the 2" barrel compared to my full size M&P 45.
