View Full Version : *The long road - SBR finally DONE*

In late summer of 2006 I contacted Mark LaRue of LaRue Tactical and asked him if he would consider making both 10.0 and 11.0 rail systems. Mark LaRue asked my reasoning for wanting the 10.0 and the 11.0. I explained that my main reason is that I really like the way the LaRue 12.0 rail butted up against the Noveske KX3 when the LaRue 12.0 was used in conjunction with the Noveske 12.5" barrel. I went onto rationalize that a majority of the SBR barrels on the market were 10.5" or 11.5" and a 10.0 and 11.0 would open up more options for customers that were wanting a rail for a SBR (including me).

At the time I didn't know if Mark LaRue took me seriously or not (or if the company even had the time to start any new projects), several months later I was suprized when LaRue Tactical came out with both the 10.0 and the 11.0 rails. I don't know if the seed I had planted had anything to do with the new offerings, but I'm not going to look a gift horse in the mouth. My plans for using a Bravo Compnay 11.5" barrel for my SBR was starting to materalize.

It took a long time for me to save up enough for everything that I needed, and there were a few snags along the way. But in April I finally had everything I needed to complete the SBR project. So late one Saturday morning a friend (who had a lot more experience wrenching on guns), a work bench, a bunch of tools, a dremel, and me sat down and started the SBR project. Several hours later we were finally finished and the SBR was finally complete.

The gun turned out much lighter in weight and much more balanced than what I had imagined. Not to metion feeling small, compact, and is a pleasure to shoot.

I shot this gun the last day of Pat Rogers' 3 day Carbine Operators course and during the zero confirmation at the beginning of the day, from 50 yards I had 3 rounds that you could cover with your thumbnail. I was told by another person that they were not surprised as they had gotten sub-1" groups with one of Bravo Companies' 11.5" barrels. Reliability has been flawless.

Close to a year in the making and it's currently one of my favorites:

I had Grant build me a similar weapon a couple of months ago on a 14.5 barrel, Grant suggested I get the paperwork for the SBR but I chose a longer barrel and rail system. I am getting similar groups at a slightly longer distance ... when you mentioned 'pleasure to shoot' that pretty much sums it up. Sweet rig... I wish I was as patient. But there is always tomorrow.

Looks great!

I recently got my first SBR together and I was really impressed with the overall weight (or the lack thereof) and (more importantly, for me at least) the balance. On paper it's only a few inches shorter, but it feels like a completely different weapon. I was also quite amazed at how well the KX3 works at taming the blast from these little beasts. I agree that they really are a pleasure to shoot.

Congrats on the new SBR. Enjoy.

And mine took almost a year to complete too, so I feel your pain. :)

I'm using an 11.5" barrel and 9.0 inch rail with an Ops 15th for a similar result.

Exactly how much does it weigh, if I may ask?

USMC03
06-20-07, 16:36
Unfortunatley I don't know how much it weighs, a bathroom scale isn't the most accurate instrument for measuring weight. If you don't believe me, look at the weight listed on most women's driver's license :D

It's light, I guess you'll just have to trust me on that :D :D :D

I used a BCM 11.5" upper in my recent SBR build but I went with a DD 10.0. I want a little more barrel than I ended up with. It sports a Vortex because the A2 looked a little too stubby.

I don't plan on going with a KX3 anytime soon...

USMC03
06-20-07, 19:28
SuicideHZ,

Why do you want more barrel exposed? Use of supressor? Astetics? Personal taste?

Would a DD 9.0 give you the exposed barrel lenght desired?

-Jeff

SuicideHz
06-20-07, 19:40
Aesthetics I guess...

A 9.0 would be better.

When I built it, I finalized my parts list while looking through the SBR pic thread here and a couple of other places. Since I knew I wanted an 11.5" barrel, I just had to make up my mind on a fore-end. I saw a few older uppers that had 9.0s and then at the last minute thought I'd order a 10.0 just because...

After it was built it reminded me of why I always HATED long fore-ends with railed gas blocks. I just never liked them and now mine looks like one, sort of...

I'll have to take a pic of it.

USMC03
06-20-07, 20:17
I would think that it would fairly easy to trade the DD 10.0 for a DD 9.0. There are A LOT more 9.0's on the market than the 10.0's. May find someone who's willing to swap with you. Just a thought.

Post a pic when you get a chance, I'd like to check it out.

-Jeff

SuicideHz

Actually I think it's the Vortex's fault.

With Vortex and A2:

http://www.zoto.com/suicidehz/img/800x600/be83f9052a7fe5f4702f062d5bbc2fa1.jpg

I kind of think I like the A2 better even though it obviously makes the barrel look shorter...

It's just a looks "thing" so it doesn't really matter.

I'm not too thrilled with the KAC knockoff panels I bought either. Should have just used the KACs I have on my other upper and bought some new ones when a deal came around...

USMC03
06-20-07, 21:04
I agree. I like the A2 better from an astetic standpoint.

I believe the rail pannels are suppose to be knock off Tango Down pannels.

As a point of reference, Zak Smith's gun (bottom) has a Noveske 12.0" barrel with a LaRue 10.0 rail. So with a 9.0 rail and the 11.5" barrel, you would have 1/2" more barrel exposed:

http://demigodllc.com/~zak/DigiCam/EAG-Carbine-2007/small/D101_5613_img.jpg

-Jeff

SuicideHz
06-20-07, 21:28
Actually my generic panels are KAC knockoffs and the simple pull tab is where TD got the idea for their ultra simple and useful tabs. They are definitely KAC wannabes... :D

I'm thinking a trio of FG TD panels would be nice but am afraid they might feel too wide. Then again, it's a DD with the perceived narrower profile...

I wouldn't mind having that extra 1/2" seeming to stick out. I definitely don't need the rail space.

by the way- sorry for the hijack.

I'd start my own thread but noone responds to me :(

Jeff:

I hope you don't mind answering a question...

Why the change from the full lenght hand guard combo with KX3 and LMT front sight to the shorter hand guard with standard FSB/surefire combo?

I am trying to make up my mind on what to use for my SBR build and your opinion would be greatly appreciated...

Good choice on the CTR stock and T1 !!!

Thanks,
JC

Jeff,
I'm digging that FSB on the SBR now. Much nicer IMO.

I would like to ask what kind of pins are used in your FSB? They seem bright and shiny. Is the black finish just worn off, or did you use something other than Colt/etc taper pins?

Also, what is your procedure for cleaning a carbine like that after all that dust??? I'm just curious how you clean the EXTERIOR of the gun? Do you spray with some type of cleaner and then fine tune the cleaning, or what???
Just curious man!

I have tried numerous different configurations over the years and I prefer having a standard A2 front sight base on the gun as it's the most durable set up for iron sights.

Weight, length, and the ability to mount a suppressor on the gun is what drove me to change the configuration of this gun.

As the gun was set up with the KX3, this gun was only 1.75" shorter than a 14.5" barrel with a perminately attached flash hider.

The KX3 was 8 oz, the difference in weight between the 7.0 vs. 11.0 rail is approximatley 5 oz. and that's not including rail pannels, etc.

The difference in weight between the old set up and the new set up is approximately 1 lbs. (16 oz). The Surefire "k" can is 16 oz. and would only add approximately 2.75" to the over all length of the barrel (vs. the KX3).

When the Surefire "k" suppressor is mounted on the gun it's approximatley the same weight as the gun was when it had the KX3 on it, will be less than 3" longer, and will be suppressed.

The FSB that came on the Bravo Company 11.5" barrel was cut down to fit under the LaRue 11.0 rail.

I had to order a new FSB brom Bravo Company. I didn't know it at the time, but when you order a new FSB, they don't come with the taper pin holes drilled. A gunsmith has to line everything up and drill new holes. The new FSB was attached by Steve at ADCO Firearms. I don't know what kind of pins he used. The pins only look shiny in the pics. They are actually a dull grey in color.

I clean the dirt and sand off the same way I did when I was in the service. Use a paint brush and a rag to get a majority of the dirt and dust off. For hard to reach areas, hose it off with water and dry with compressed air.

was the move to the CTR just for weight? i assume so, because i can't think of a more comfortable stock than the SOPMOD. will the gun end up to be front heavy with the surefire can and the lighter CTR?

I like both the CTR and the SOPMOD. Different stocks feel better on different guns (balance / weight). The SOPMOD felt better when the gun had the longer rail and the 8 oz KX-3 on it. With the shorter rail, it feels lighter and better balanced with the CTR. Both stocks are extreemly comfortable. The SBR balances well with the Surfire "k" can on it.

Dang that padded VCAS looks short, they way I LIKE them. I am trying to figure out if that padded VCAS is somehow possibly even SHORTER than mine???
I have taken a regular padded VCAS (the newest, most recent version, JUST OUT, which is 3" shorter than the older ones), and I removed the unecessary fastex nylon buckle, and then I shortened down the sling A LOT, to get it down to where my slender build needs it to be.
However, I'm sitting here thinking the VCAS in that last pic, looks to be EVEN SHORTER than mine!
I cannot tell from the bright white lighting, if this is the padded VCAS with the SEWN IN pushbutton swivel at the rear buttstock or not???
Also, is this the NEWEST most recent padded version, which BFG told me is a FULL 3 INCHES SHORTER than the previous padded slings?????
Very interested.

Paul,

The sling posted above is the newer version that has the padded section that is 3" shorter.

It may look shorter, because I shortened the middle section as much as possible and cut off the excess webbing.

That is indeed the same exact sling I have then. I received one of the very first ones that were 3" shorter (padded), and I like it a lot. Yours just looked much shorter than mine in the pics.
Thanks.
