Hello gentleman (and ladies), I am new to the forum and totally new to rifles. I am a big 1911 fan but decided to venture into the black rifle world.

I am basically looking for a rifle for SD/HD/Range fun. I want it chamber 5.56mm (able to load .223). My budget is < $1500 for a complete rifle with all I need.

I am sure this has already been asked, if so, please point me to the link as I could not find from the search.

Difference between AR-15 and M4 - I did find lots of answers on the web but could not really come up with a good one to find out what I want.

I am also considering "building" (buying the complete upper and complete lower) my own - what do you say?

Thanks in advance.

With a $1500 budget, buying a great upper with a normal lower is very doable. I think $1000 should cover the rifle, leftover $500 could go into good optics, mags, and ammo.

All M4s are AR-15s, not all AR-15s are M4s.

The gold standard for M4 style Ar-15s is the Colt 6920. You can pick these up for around 1200 bucks.

In that price range you also have the BCM, Daniel Defense and Lewis machine and Tool (LMT) rifles which are also top notch.

Any of these rifles are great no compromise weapons.

Go to BCMs website and shop around.

Really? Any suggestions on what to get to make this $1000 top e d rifle? THAT WOULD BE COOL!

There are too many variables to consider when making a suggestion. There are a million brands that offer a million configurations. Like another poster said, go to: http://www.bravocompanyusa.com/ to check out some pre-made configurations. Read the descriptions, when you run into something you don't understand, Google it or search for it here.

Brownwells has an AWESOME site that will let you configure an AR online to see how it looks. http://www.ar15builder.com/
