I am about to get my first AR-15 and I live behind enemy lines in NY State. I can only get 10 round magazines here and I'm not sure what companies to look at. I see some C Products magazines but it sounds like they aren't really reliable. I would like to use the gun for self defense, but not with questionable mags. Cal Legal Mags has some modified P-Mags that should be legal here. Any ideas?

Well, Canada faces similar sorts of restrictions. I know the LAR 10 round pistol mags are popular up here but I have no idea how hard most guys run them...well, actually I have every idea how hard most guys run them, but I don't know if they stand up to more abuse than what the average gun owner doles out.

But they are very popular up here and I can honestly say I don't hear a lot of people complaining about stoppages, so they MAY be worthwhile.

I like the 10/20 pmags at midwestpx. Can be ordered with or without ranger plates. (I opted for with). It takes up less real estate than the 10/30 pmags, but aren't ridiculously short like the super stubby mags which they also sell on the site. DO NOT GET THE CUT DOWN SUPER STUBBY 10RD MAGS!! They basically get swallowed up by the magwell, and in a self defense situation, will be very difficult to get a good purchase with your fingers.

I haven't had any trouble with the c product mags for bench shooting, but ymmv if you're running them hard. Tango Down also makes 10/30 mags which I like a lot. Lancer makes some 10 round magazines. Both are available from midway.

So this thread is a couple years old and I'm wondering who makes the best 10 round mags now? Even if the Hi-Cap mag doesn't pass I need on for hunting.

Magpul has 10 round M3 mags coming soon. When I lived in CA I had a few 20 round mags with 10 round blockers and they were somewhat reliable. Occasional feeding issues and wouldn't always lock the bolt to the rear.

How about on the steel mags as well?

I know Colt makes 9 round mags that are aluminum. No personal experience with them.

My BCM came with a Colt 9 round mag. No issues here.

Lancer L5 AWM is probably the best true 10. I like 10/30 Pmags for training and I have had really good luck with the reliablity.

D&H makes a good 10 round mag.
I have a few that have worked well.
It's been a few weeks, but the last time I looked at 44mag.com they were sold out.

I have a steel 10 round Bushmaster mag. Excellent quality. I have put maybe 1000 rounds through it with no problems.
It just might be the only thing Bushmaster does well.

So far I like the lancers and D&H mags. Lancers have the slight edge due to easier field stripping. I mainly use them to sight in optics, so they don't get too much wear.

I'm sure the new PMAGS will be even better.

Us members stuck up here in New Yorkistan (hopefully not much longer!) have until April 15th to but 10 round magazines. I've been trying to find some but haven't had much luck. The Syracuse Gun Show isn't until the weekend after the "buying 10 rd. mag. ban" go's into effect.

I'd also like to know which 10 rd. mags. are good too. I bought some C Products 10 rd. mags. a few years ago and had nothing but trouble with them. They were so tight that I had to push them into the mag. well. I sent them back and the new ones they sent me were even worse. I just gave them away. Same with their followers for the pre-ban 30 rd. mags. I had.

Hopefully I'll be able to grab some good ones before the deadline.

Just order some 30rd mag "rebuild kits" from 44mag. Then hide them away. (Nobody will know, and you'll have them just in case)

Stand up for your rights guys! Don't comply and abide by this unlawful nonsense!

SMETNA, that's a great idea. However, last time I was at the range I somehow forgot my 30 rd. pre-ban mags. on the back of my truck. Would you believe they fell off the back of the truck on the way home from the range. . . . .strangest thing that ever happen to me!

I've used C product 10 rounders for a while and they're worked ok at the range. I also bought some of these from 44mag (http://www.44mag.com/product/d_h_ar15_10_round_magazine/223_ar15_magazines) (currently out of stock however), it uses a Magpul follower. Worked great too.

Being in PRK, I have tried quite a few different 10-round options out there ... I have found that the D&H 10-round mags (not the ones with blocks to make them 10/30, etc.) are the most reliable ones I have used.

When I lived in CA I had 5 10/20 pmags that worked well. I had read the 10/30s would have issues. Once I moved I was able to punch out roll pin that held the bottom plate and remove the block. They are now my 20 round range mags when on the bench or shooting prone.
