View Full Version : Which mount for NON-Railed forends?

Alright,
I would like to mount a light on a middie carbine. I don't have (nor do I want) a rail on this rifle. What are my quality mounting options that don't involve using the "A frame"?

Thanks

Just a light, or light with VFG? There are a couple that will work just fine, but I would be concerned about putting too much pressure on them with VFG installed. As such, I don't know if the word quality really fits the bill.

Just a light.

I've seen the rail sections that bolt on the HG's through the vent holes, but that's about it. For some reason they don't really make me feel all warm and fuzzy inside either.

Do you know what light you want to use?

I'm using one of these (http://www.gandrtactical.com/cgi-bin/commerce.cgi?preadd=action&key=G2-P) mounted in one of these (http://www.gandrtactical.com/cgi-bin/commerce.cgi?preadd=action&key=QDLM) attached to a TACTICAL ILLUMINATOR MOUNT (http://www.brownells.com/aspx/NS/store/ProductDetail.aspx?p=24182&title=TACTICAL+WEAPON+LIGHTS).

I want to be able to take the light off the gun and use it as a handheld, and I think that this combo will allow that the easiest. I'm running into a few compatibility issues with my sling and firing grip, but ultimately I think this will work out well.

Also, the screws that come with the mount are ridiculously long and I am going to have to trim them down substantially to get the metal shield re-installed in my handguard.

I would like to use a good light (G2 or better, maybe one of Grant's builds). How do you like your setup so far?

Well, as I said, I haven't been able to put it all together yet so I can't say how well I like it.

May I ask why you don't want to use a rail, free float or otherwise?

Some of us don't like VFGs.

Anyway, look at Bravo Company's website. They have a mount that attaches to the FSB. Might be what you're looking for. I have one and I like it.
Here you go: http://www.bravocompanyusa.com/Midwest-Industries-MCTAR-01-p/mctar-01.htm

ETA: Doh, should have read the whole post. There is always the CAA bayonet lug mount. I don't know about the quality. If you're just attaching a light, there is always the option of putting on a small rail through the handguards. It's sturdy enough for the purpose.

Damian,
It's a simplicity thing. I was going to be using one of CMMG's 14.5" lightweight Middy barrels on an A1 upper.

I didn't think free float rail systems were complicated. Oh well, different strokes for different folks. Get the Surefire system and be done with it. That is, if you really don't want to worry about quality, want rails, and don't want free float.

Sorry dude, no free lunches.;)

There goes that pesky logic again Damian! ;)

Aside from the non-fuzzy bolt on rail sections for handguards and the FSB mounts, there's the old-school barrel mount option. If you really want to keep it 'slick' and no-frills maybe you can tape a light on your trunk monkey's head and keep him on a short leash?

This might be somthing better than mounting the light to the FS. I have one of these on a plain jane carbine and with a simple 1" scope ring it works just fine.

I always thought the problem with those types of set ups, was that you are relying on the strength of a little screw and the handguard to retain you light.

On my gun w/o a rail, I currently use a GG&G SLiC mount, rail on one side and sling loop on the other. Prior to that I just used the surefire barrel mount, and didn't notice any problems.

If I wanted to avoid the rail's, either one of those set ups is what I'd use.

Streamlight makes a mount and light holder that is similar to the GG&G, I have a couple of them and ain't scared of them falling off just yet. I've yet to lose a handguard either but I ain't that hard on my guns.

I'm not to worried about the light or handguard just falling off, but if it takes agood whack on a doorframe, falls, etc. that handguard may not withstand that.

If SF made 'em for a mid-length I'd be all over it like stink on a monkey.
