I am currently putting together a (Double Star) carbine with a 14.5" lightweight barrel and a permanently attached Vltor flash hider.

I am planning on using a Vltor low profile gas block with a Daniel Defense lite rail ? I am considering a 9.0, 10.0, 0r maybe even longer - but can't m,ake an informed decision.

I am assuming that if the gas block is at carbine length (7 inches), I will need at least a 9" rail to completely cover it - assuming?. Should I have a gas block that's further out?

What are your thoughts? Does anyone have pictures of similar builds?

Thanks,
Scott

I was planning something along the same lines... Will your gas block be small enough to slide the rail system over it when installing? The reason I ask is because if it's too big and you need to remove it (the gas block), then you might have a problem getting it off due to the permanently attached Vltor FH. If you have a solution to this problem, please let me know as it is causing me problems right now.

Since your going to be covering up the gas block anyway you should go with the longest gas system available. This I would be a 16" midlength barrel and cut, grind down and refinish the factory FSB to fit under what ever rail/float tube That way you'll end up with a pinned low profile gas block that won't move. I'd then use a rifle length 12.0 rail or FF tube so that very little barrel stick out beyond the rail. If you want the barrel very light you could have the barrel in front of and behind the gas block turned down to .625" or .630" to shave a bunch of the weight. If you want it at 14.5" so that it's a tiny bit shorter than a 16" you can have it shortened and rethreaded too. Randall at www.ar15barrels.com does this kind of work (reprofiling/shortening), he'll be getting my 3gun ARs barrel to time up the F2 comp so that I don't have to use a crush or peel washer.

My 3 gun rifle is a 16" midlength and I cut down the F post FSB to fit under the JP tube.

My wifes 3gun rifle has a 16" Colt .625" barrel (CAR gas length) and I cut and ground down the FSB to fit under the JP tube as well. I only this barrel because I already owned it. When I need to replace it I'll be using a 16" midlength with a .625" profile.
