Buddy of mine is a forest service officer. I asked if he carried any high power carbine type rifles in his truck. he said an AR-15 A#. I'm pretty sure the A in the A3 means automatic, does the 3 mean 3 round burst? Does this rifle have the option of semi auto, and 3 round burst only? No fully auto? I know the military carries M4A1 and obviously they have semi, 3 round and full. Anybody know??

A does not mean automatic and 3 does not mean 3 round burst.

M16A3's are full auto versions of A2's. it's possible that's what he is issued. my dept. issues M16A1's.

Roger that...what does the A designation mean? Is that a certain part in the weapon?

it's just a designator they use for upgrades. the original M16 was just that...M16...then came the A1,A2,A3,A4, and prob. an A5 soon. they do the same for pistols and other weapons.

he could also be referring to a colt AR6721 which Colt also calls the AR-15 A3. it's a semi auto 1/9 twist 16" HBAR with flattop and collapsible stock.

or it could just be an AR with a flattop upper, there are plenty of manufacturers who use the A3 designation to mean flattop upper. ie: bushmaster, stag, dpms, dsa
