For all who don't know. Looks like someone in the US is actually making shorter LOP Benelli stocks.

This is good new for me! I've always wanted a shorter LOP for my M1S90 because I'm considering the purchase of a plate carrier. The ergonomics are good right now, but I think the added heft of a carrier would put the LOP beyond my ideal

This is BIG news for M1S90 owners.... But it is about a year too late for me, as I sold mine last year.

Looks good but I don't think there's been any movement on this since they announced them in January. I hope it's coming out soon.

Here are some pics:

I basically cut down the stock just above the main fastening bolt, then I added a metal bracket under the bolt that has screw holes for the buttpad to attach to. Then I attached a Speedfeed youth pad I had lying around which fit pretty good. I also added Velcro directly to the stock for a low profile and easily changed ammo holder.

In this picture there is an OEM stock underneath showing the difference in length. It makes a huge difference in handling!

Very nice. I've seen a few other guys who have done that, but they usually have shit sticking out the sides of the stock.

Could I persuade you to post some pics of the guts? I'm having a little trouble visualizing your description.

Since I never seem to have any time at home to get a good pic of my short stock internals, here is a crappy hand drawing of what I did.

http://i923.photobucket.com/albums/ad74/stocknum/Drawing.jpg

Basically, after cutting the stock I inserted a rigid metal bracket under the main stock attachment screw. This bracket has threaded barrels attached to it that the new buttpad can screw into. Pretty simple although finding a rigid enough metal bracket is important because any give in the metal will cause a loose buttpad. Also, there were some fit issues with the mainscrew being 1/8" or so backed out causing the whole stock not to attach correctly to the receiver that I had to deal with (but I forget how). I think it was just an alignment issue.

I hope this helps...

Good Luck!

Any news on this stock? Is it in production now? Id be interested in trying one for my Benelli. The factory length has always been problematic and so far no simple solution. This may be the way to go.

I have an Urbino on pre-order with Mesa and talked to them yesterday. They said they are hoping to get production models in a couple weeks.

If you're following the Urbino Stock Production Status thread over on Mesa's forum (http://www.mesatactical.com/forum/viewtopic.php?id=811), you know that things are going slowly. The owner is doing a great job of keeping folks posted from week to week but I get the impression that "I'll have production models in a couple weeks" means something more along the lines of him actually having a few more MODELS in hand from the mold makers to evaluate to rather than having the merchandise ready to ship. As an example, his post as recently as two weeks ago read...

Yesterday I spent some time at the moldmakers. We have been concerned about the cheek riser, since with the current mechanism it can't be removed if the material is stiff enough to ensure it doesn't deflect during use. This has been an issue for a month or so now.

We arrived a solution, however, by going back to our original proposal for a mechanism to secure the riser. This will require a minimum of changes to the existing tooling. And it will be a much more reliable set-up. Should have stayed with it from the beginning.

Here are some close-up pics of the first articles. Note that they have not been textured yet.

http://www.mesatactical.com/images/249.jpg

And then just a couple days ago he was contacting Magpul for samples of FDE to see what color his tan stock should be. :(

So...I think it's pretty safe to assume that it's gonna be a while before we see these things shipping. Remember that there are going to be many variations of the Urbino (blank, tan, with cheek riser, without, with recoil pad, without, with shell holder, without, Benelli, M1/M2, M4, Remington, etc.), so there is still a lot of work to be done from what I've gathered reading the various posts.

Seems like that old adage rearing its ugly head again... "You can have it right -- Or you can have it right now -- But you can't have both."

Personally, I'll wait for a better finished product.

Thanks for the updates and keeping us in the loop.

has mesa tactical stated what the stock will weigh? that's obviously a crucial factor for us m1/m2 owners.

I have a 3 gun gear 8 shell holder on my gun now with no issues, and it would be nice if the urbino weighed sufficiently less than the factory stock to negate the addition of a light or surefire fore end.

My M4 Urbino finally arrived in the mail yesterday. It is very well made and as short as my cut down OEM stock. I have no idea why it took so long for anyone to finally make shorter length Benelli stocks, but now we have them :)

Mesa Tactical has a winner with this stock!

Hopefully they will make some matching M1 fore-ends also for those of us who have the older surefire forearms with the light that want to use a stock one but unable to find a factory one or they are way overpriced. Make them internally threaded on the top and sides to add rails for lights, etc..

Be advised, this stock isn't mine and it's the standard buttpad (non-Limbsaver) version. But it lets you see what the Urbino looks like, particularly in comparison to the factory Benelli stock. Very nice if I may say so myself.

I've had one on order for a little while now. For an 870. I've been told that Benelli is priority & 870 should ship in couple of moths. This is the only thing I have left to complete my shotty. Running a youth factory stock now & no complaints, but I've always loved the Benelli stock. I'm an 870 guy so when I saw this I thought "just have to have".

If you can't seem to get used to it and still just hate it, you can remove the factory Benelli rubber overmold grip and place it onto the Urbino stock.

chriskc04
01-21-11, 07:26

Cool, that was the only thing I didn't like about the Urbino, was the goofy "almost Benelli" grip! Being able to take the one off my factory stock definitely removes one major reservation I had.

chriskc04
01-21-11, 21:43
Got it! They indeed just slip right on and off.

It might be useful to note that the Urbino's came off much more easily than the factory, so you may want to do that one first to get a feel for it.

I just roughly went by the guide that one of our own members posted here and on hkpro. (Don't remember the exact thread, but it was the first hit when googling "Benelli M1 stock shortening.")

His version entailed forming a block of wood to fit inside the stock, complete with roll pins, epoxy, and a hole drilled in the center of the block for access to the buttstock screw.

My dad and I hacked a single wood block into rough shape with hand saws and a dremel, then just secured it in the stock with four screws, two on each side. Then just screwed the butt pad to that. If I ever have to take off the stock, it means I'll have four screws to undo to get to the buttstock screw rather than two, but eh, it was much simpler this way. (Admittedly it was my dad's idea to just use those screws, and get ones with countersunk heads so they don't stick out. He's much better at this stuff than I am.)

Just try to get up behind the rubber and start working it down. I used a small eyeglass screwdriver to get it started. I would follow their suggestion of taking the grip off the Urbino first. It was much looser and you get a good feel for where the problem areas are going to be on the Benelli grip.

I installed one of these this weekend on my wife's 870. Wow! We really like this stock. The short LOP is great, it was easy to install, we couldn't be more satisfied. My wife is very petite and she commented today on how much more controllable the 870 was now with the Urbino when compared to the original full-size stock, going as far to say, "there is no recoil". I am waiting for the go-ahead from our armorers for permission to install one of these on my work SG. I only wish it was an inch or so shorter still. Good job, MT!

I got mine last week. Shot it Friday. One word, SWEET! I let another shooter shoot 6 rounds of SB 00 Buck out of it. He was shooting a similar 870 with a MESA LEO and standard carbine stock and a rubber recoil pad. His comment "That ain't fair"
I am 5'9" 200lbs and I wear a 36" sleeve dress shirt. This is the best fitting stock I have used. I have used regular Speed Feed stocks (standard and reduced LOP) but the Urbino seems to let me get "lower" and my bead is where it should be on the target, I am no longer hitting high like I was before. I shot 20 rounds of SB and Federal 00 buck, 5 Federal LEO slugs, and 5 Remington 3" 000 Buck rounds. All felt really good with this set up and stayed in the 10" center out to 25 yards. Follow up shots were much quicker.

I'd be interested to know if you experience anything similar.I'm not sure about the Supernova, but on the M4, the trigger assembly extends into the stock to keep it straight. Sounds like incorrect assembly to me.

I remember reading awhile back that Mesa was planning to redesign the grip. Did it ever happen?

No, and I doubt they will. At least for a while. They seem to be selling well as-is.

My advice is to buy an $18 Benelli M4 rubber outer grip from Brownell's to go along with your Urbino.

For those who have put the Urbino stock on the supernova, what did you use for an extension on the stock support rod? When I ordered the stock, I was under the impression that i didn't need to mod anything. Any help would be appreciated.
