1st of all I will clarifly my idea of SHTF as a complete collapse of civilization.

So I recently got a Beretta 92fs as my SHTF handgun.

So now Im looking at some different rounds and trying to decide what weight would work best. I want good penetration so FMJ is a must.

Im looking at 124 grn and 147 grn. I would think the 124 would penetrate cover better, but I believe the flatter profile of the 147 would do more damage against attackers or game.

What do you guys think?

Both will leave ice pick holes in soft tissue and give lots of penetration, so 6 of one, half dozen of the other.

Were I to go with ball ammo I'd likely stick to the Winchester or Federal M882 (did I get that number right?) military stuff since high quality ball ammo doesn't really exist otherwise like it used to.

I think you be better off spending money on something like this though;

147 JHP.

9x19 has inherently good penetration when it comes to tissue or body armor. (From what I know.)

I would never recommend FMJ as a defensive load ever.

It has over-penetration issues (NYPD knows) and bad expansion.

Glance at the terminal ballistics forum. (Where this topic should be moved to.)

ETA: M882 is the right designation.

Please review the threads in this forum:

for good information on ammunition types.

SHTF/TEOTWAWKI topics discussing the "complete collapse of civilization" and how your stockpile of 9mm pistol ammunition is going to save you is not appropriate for the M4C technical forums.
