Islam in Two Americas

I'm aware the most recent thread regarding the controversial proposed Islamic cultural center/mosque/whatever in NYC was locked by the mods and I don't wish reopen the same wound.

However, I do want to draw attention to an op-ed piece by Russ Douthat published in Sunday's New York Times:

In my opinion, Mr. Douthat does an excellent job of capturing the core of the controversy. Additionally, and perhaps most importantly, he illustrates that there exists a distinct quid-pro-quo between the rights and freedoms we are granted as Americans and the responsibilities and obligations entailed in being an American citizen.

The mods may wish to lock this thread to prevent a repetition of the earlier discussion but I hope they'll leave up the link as I think this article is worth reading, regardless of what opinion readers may hold with respect to the current controversy.

Were they invited to the WH, and and did FDR constantly grovel to Germans in America by saying how wonderful they were, that we were not at war with Germans, and the type of pandering going on today?

Didn't die Bund dissolve when the war began? I thought many of the members became disillusioned with it? I know a few moved on to start the garbage we see today. Only thing I remember is the leader was snubbed by Hitler when he visited Deutschland.
