Who is a good gunsmith to thread an unthreaded 16 in barrel? What should it cost? Does the barrel need to be removed from the upper to do it? The idea here is to install a Battle Comp break ASAP.

Threading the barrel will not be a problem, but after removing the compensator, you will be able to see the compensator roll pin channels in the barrel.

Why not get a 6920 barrel instead?

I had ADCO do mine right after the ban went away. They were fast & did a good job. However, that was 6 yrs ago. I am not sure about their current reputation.

I took the original compensator off because i could not stand the blast. Neither could those around me. The barrel has low rounds and it would be a shame to discard it. Besides in my state i cant have a flash suppresor. Hence the highly acclaimed Battle Comp.

in NJ, you can't have a threaded barrel either, so you'll need the battle comp permanently attached to the barrel.

They did the same for me early this year. Fast and good work.

You need to thread the barrel and have the new break perm installed.

Perm attach $30

Cut/Crown/Thread $65

Plus the cost of whatever break you are using.

If you are going to have the barrel threaded you might as well cut it down to 14+ inches with the difference under 16 inches being the length of the break you are using to make a total length of legal 16 inches. It looks like it costs the same. Also, the site notes that the barrel must be removed.

If the barrel is still good it seems worth while. A new 6920 barrel is $450.

Unless you can find it for cheaper... and then you still need to have the break pinned. So the cost to mod the barrel is only $65 vs. $450 barrel. Even if you don't go with a Colt barrel, a good carbine barrel is still likely to cost in the $300 range. Still a deal at $65.
